81  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ICO LIVE] STRATIS | C# Blockchain Development Platform | ICO ends in 9 days on: July 17, 2016, 08:38:30 PM
Guys, I only heard about this because I was mining icocountdown on a lazy Sunday afternoon. You might attract more donations if you threw it around a little more in crypto circles. As much as I hate signature bounties, you might want to consider crap like that to generate interest. I tossed in a bit of BTC for the cause. Hopefully you guys can prune down the wish list in the short term if funding falls short.

86  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: June 06, 2016, 05:49:03 PM
Not trolling, but I'm trying to understand the monetization of this coin. I'm looking to make a big investment in GRC as I very much like that the energy expended serves a useful purpose, but I can't understand what drives the "value" of this coin. Is it just remittance with a side effect of PoW benefit? Or is there an intention to have projects "purchase/rent" CPU time on the network through some sort of portal (using the tokens/coins for the chain)? I understand there is a BOINC white list, and that is great, but is it still "free" like Seti@home? Clearly folks are willing to donate free cpu time historically to scientific projects, but beyond remittance I don't see what would drive value for this coin at that point. If remittance is your use case, there are a lot of other block chains with more momentum and visibility. Just trying to wrap my head around this project, sorry for all the questions.

Not trolling here, but what is the difference between DGB and GameCredits/GAME? This question is less about technology (I assume both are bitcoin codebase forks, but I might be wrong) and more about philosophy, approach, and industry penetration.

NRI: Consortium Model No Silver Bullet for Blockchain
Pete Rizzo (@pete_rizzo_) | Published on January 13, 2016 at 13:23 GMT

Despite the interest of large financial firms in pursuing consortium models as part of their effort to understand blockchain and distributed ledger tech, a leading Japan-based think tank believes these efforts could fall out of favor should alternative approaches yield more success.

In a new interview with CoinDesk, Kazumitsu Yokokawa, head of the financial services research and technology group at Nomura Research Institute (NRI), indicated that he believes private proof-of-concepts (P0Cs) will be more effective when pursued with the help of firms like his own.

The NRI has to date emerged as one of the most active firms in Asia in investigating the emerging technology, announcing two P0Cs in 2015 with parent firm Nomura Securities and Japan-based online bank SBI Sumishin.

Yokokawa told CoinDesk that, in his opinion, financial firms are eager to test both consortiums and partnerships with professional services firms like NRI, Deloitte and PwC, but that he believes the latter approach will yield faster and more actionable results.

Yokokawa said:

"I think financial firms are going to bet on both individual P0Cs and consortium models. They want to work individually and with groups, but I personally believe that private P0Cs will see quicker results."

As for NRI, the Tokyo-based firm is largely exploring the technology’s use cases in Japan, a region where blockchain industry developments have been few and far between.

NRI, Yokokawa said, sees a strong business case in exploring blockchain technology given the demand by groups like Nomura and SBI. Still, he inferred NRI is looking at these partnerships strategically as it seeks to gather its own expertise in the subject area.

For example, he noted that NRI is working with Nomura to investigate applications in securities, while SBI is focused on banking. Further P0Cs, he said, could be launched around other use cases as they are identified.

"Blockchain could be used for many industries, including retailers and enterprises, and we are interested in exploring these," he said. "The purpose of these PoCs is to come up with practical ways to use blockchain in the future for these industries beyond financial industry."

Fear of missing out

Big financial institutions, in Japan and abroad, he said are interested in exploring the technology as evidenced by their response to news of its pilot programs. However, he notes their conclusions are not yet developed.

This, he argues, has led to the multi-pronged approach where members like Nomura are willing to work with groups like NRI and R3, which has so far attracted more than 40 international banks to its consortium effort.

"The simple questions are 'Why are we using the blockchain?', 'What is the benefit of the blockchain?', 'What is the outcome?'. Those who haven’t studied it don’t understand the reasons, and they want to know what other people are doing," he explained.

As for NRI’s thesis on blockchain tech, Yokokawa said that he believes it’s not clear that some of the more impressive use cases will be validated.

In particular, he questioned the idea that major clearinghouses, which provide clearing and settlement services to large financials, face a threat from the technology.

"Blockchain should be first applied for small-scale thing such as unlisted equities which need a lot of manual operation without systemization," he suggested.

Yokokawa said he believes that the blockchain is today most compelling as an alternative to paper-based processes, and that more complex uses cases are further away than is widely asserted.

Bridging interests

For its part, NRI sees itself as an enabler of exploration in the industry due to its ability to identify "innovative blockchain vendors" and to coordinate between these groups and more established financial organizations.

"Blockchain study requires both innovative technologies and financial knowledge. SBI Sumishin, Dragonfly Fintech and NRI as a team will provide these essential elements of industry knowledge and cutting-edge technology for blockchain PoC," Yokokawa said.

He further noted that NRI has advantages in Japan’s market, as local blockchain startups, he said, largely lack a strong knowledge of the financial industry.

This, he said, is in contrast to the US, where groups often include a mix of tech and business specialists.

"We provide the knowledge of financial industry and make a package service working with the ventures since we know the market," he added. "We coordinate."

For its efforts, NRI has partnered with Dragonfly Fintech for its PoC with SBI, a startup Yokokawa lauded for developing the "first" private blockchain for the Japanese market.

Plan of action

Following the completion of its initial PoCs, Yokokawa said NRI will make its own determinations on how to move forward with blockchain technology, including potentially releasing its technology.

Yokokawa said that NRI employees, including researchers, systems consultants and developers, are all working on blockchain.

For now, however, he’s content with the company being the de-facto leader in its market by virtue of its early work.

“We are the first and only one [working with blockchain] in the securities market in Japan. In the banking industry, we are also early adopters,” he said.

Still, he wouldn’t rule out potentially collaborating with R3, noting that its largest competitor, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, has joined the effort.

He concluded:

"With our close ties and existing relationships with those Japanese financial institutions, we aim to keep creating new value in the marketplace."

how can i change my datapath like  -datadir= on btc
i want to change my file location to my nas

--data-dir

to go a little more in depth in-case other want to do it.

I have all my coins on external NAS to keep my computer a bit tidy and free of all the wallets I download

Create a shortcut to your daemon. I have it all external, so usually just have a folder of shortcuts.

In the shortcut after the path in the Target category, put and space after .exe and then followed by --data-dir=LOCATIONHERE

That is exactly what I do also because my NAS is _encrypted_, redundant, and backed up. So yeah, I think that is the smart way to go. So here is my exact shortcut as an example:

Target: Z:\Cryptocurrency\Boolberry\Wallet\Binary\qt-boolb.exe --data-dir Z:\Cryptocurrency\Boolberry\Wallet\Data
Start in: Z:\Cryptocurrency\Boolberry\Wallet\Binary

Where Z: is a mapped network drive via CIFS to my NAS in windows

Important announcement

  • In an effort to further encourage stakeholder registration, the redemption deadline is extended to last until 29 November(30 November, 00:00 GMT).
  • Due to important improvements, bug fixes, extended testing and necessity of miltisig, official launch has been rescheduled for December.
  • After some serious reconsideration, penalties for after launch redemption have been dropped. The redemption period will also be cut down to 2 months instead of 3.
  • Starting as of Sunday we will make a series of important announcements about great things we have been preparing for NEM.

Stay tuned. Wink

Does this apply _only_ to BTT or to AE as well?

It would also be a good idea to vote for Monero as well.  Cryptsy hasn't implemented cryptonote coins into their trading platform.  Monero has been sitting at the top of the voting list.  If they add Monero then it will be easier to get BBR listed because they will have already done the work to add cryptonote coins.

BBR and XMR would be best served by cooperating together to promote cryptonote technology and adoption which would benefit both coins.  So a vote for XMR helps BBR as well.  I'm not optimistic that Cryptsy will add either coin anytime soon regardless of any voting results.

Yeah look at that crap above it. What... the... is it like pump and dump $h1tclone whales throwing BTC at cryptsy? I can't see any other reason.

Yes, I just discovered that with AccountImportance and you have reduced me to using hexeditors and other tools. Trust score and node experience objects are only giving me some bread crumbs.

PoI competition

Introduction

The goal of this competition to promote more active use of the beta software and to encourage people to try to take advantage of, and learn about the proof of importance algorithm by manipulating importance score through transactions to the benefit of the account holder. There will be some simple rules and guidelines that users will be required to follow but aside from some basic rules users are free to do as they like in an attempt to raise their importance. Upon completion of the competition, the winner will be rewarded with a prize of one NemStake.

Aim

The aim is for participants to raise their importance whilst retaining the most amount of the initial amount of nem that was provided to participants. For example, user A and user B get 10,000,000 nem. if both user A and user B increase their importance by 1% but user A retains 9,000,000 while user B retains 9,500,000 nem, user A increased his importance by 0.000001% per nemcoin spent where as user B increased his importance by 0.000002% per nemcoin spent. User B increased his importance most in terms of percent per nemcoin spent thus winning the competition.

Rules

  • All participants will be given private keys that will open accounts that contain equal amounts of nem. These will be users “Primary accounts”
  • Users are allowed to open as many secondary accounts as they wish.
  • A minimum of 10 transactions must be made using your “Primary account” to be eligible for the prize.
  • The submitted importance score must be on the “Primary account”.
  • Any remaining “dust” in secondary accounts must be returned to the “Primary account” before submission of account data.
  • Remaining dust that cannot be sent is excluded from calculations.
  • Importance score of secondary accounts will not be taken into account.

Start date

This competition will Start Wednesday evening at 8pm GMT. If you would like to participate please contact me as soon as possible via PM to ensure your place and i will assign a primary account to you. I will then send you a private key Wednesday evening prior to the start of the competition that will give you access to your “primary account”.

Note: The nem team reserves the right to disqualify any participants if rules have been found to be broken.

100  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Beta is here/Phase 2 Redemption begins[Updates&Discussion] on: November 19, 2014, 10:17:59 PM

We'll keep bumping this date to remind NEMsters the date.

REDEEM YOUR AE BEFORE NOVEMBER 22, 2014

CHEERS GUYS

bump

Timezone please Smiley. You know the most volatility will be in the final hours Wink. Some of us will hang in for that, so a solid time, 12:00 UTC or whatever would be welcome.

1. You are right, i would to know this too..
2. How many stakes i can buy max at the asset exchange? (i have already redeemed my stake)
3. The NEM swarm team need a help? If needed i can join Wink

To answer #2, you can buy as many as you want. There is no limit. Just be sure to redeem them before the deadline and you are fine.

Any and all dates we post are GMT. Usually I don't sit infront of scripts and wait to exactly the last second to turn it off so deadlines can be pushed back by a few hours or even a day if it's something like turning of the portal or whatever. However to make sure your redemption is valid don't count on that.

This info was added both on the NEM forum and medium post:

"Q3: How long do I have to redeem my Nxt AE asset and BTT stake ?

A: Deadline is set for 22nd(00:00 GMT 23rd) of November."

Thanks gents. Understood loud and clear.
