81  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which coin is best to support? on: September 10, 2015, 03:37:24 PM
Gridcoin is in my opintion the best coin to support as supporting it involves supporting sciene and advancing humanity. The best thing about it is that even total crypto-newcomers understand the idea behind it and want to contribute their computing power, see for example https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/3k059i/run_boinc_on_your_home_lab_offset_electricity/

The mining process consits of running BOINC (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Open_Infrastructure_for_Network_Computing) research simulations on your computer, for example folding proteins, simulating a brain or searching for aliens.

You get rewarded for this research in a completely decentralized way. If you are interested go to gridcoin.us or visit our IRC: https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net:6667/#gridcoin

People totally new to the idea of cryptocurrency react very positive to the idea of Gridcoin Smiley :

Looks like we could recruit some new member from there!

Wait GRC? Isn't that the same as the company that's promoting on facebook where you have to buy in to mine their coin and afterwards you'll be ahead of everyone when it eventually launches?

nope, you're confusing it with some other coin. It has already launched in 2013 lol.
85  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: August 24, 2015, 12:25:57 PM
Yes, we should make a reddit thread about that, anyone want to create one?
86  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: August 17, 2015, 10:40:37 AM
I made a post on r/cryptocurrency about Gridcoin.

It's still on the front page! https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/3h7yrj/visualisation_of_how_much_research_was_done_by/
87  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bullish Percent Index for cryptos on: August 16, 2015, 05:59:00 PM
I voted for for Gridcoin (GRC), as I think replacing mining with doing research for scientific projects, for example to cure Ebola (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/oet1/overview.do), fold proetins (https://boinc.bakerlab.org/) or find aliens (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/) is very good. Then the money is worth the useful computations that were given to the public to create the money.

Making this possible in a dencetralized way is very hard, but I think the current approach of Gridcoin solves this problem very well. You can read about it here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PE4Rb6JylkVxj031pHW6aNPU-PLh_VenLHTkgqcZ2NM/edit#heading=h.1nx0jl77hp5r

From a user's point of view he simply has to run the simulations from the different projects on BOINC and the Gridcoin client. Then Gridcoin comes to a consensus, who has contributed how much computing power to BOINC, which can for example be seen here: http://gridresearchcorp.com/gridcoin/?result&t=CPID_Leaderboard . In some blocks this consenus is saved in the blockchain and the reward one gets when staking a block is proportional to the amount of research recently contributed by this user as it is stored in the blockchain.

All in one I think this is very useful and different to standard altcoins and that's why I invested in Gridcoin.

But it's a lot of information, I'm not sure how to fit this into a infographic....
89  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: August 11, 2015, 01:31:24 PM
so I made a first version of a document explaining how Gridcoin works: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PE4Rb6JylkVxj031pHW6aNPU-PLh_VenLHTkgqcZ2NM/edit#heading=h.w0am5v95932e

What do you think of it?

Help test Research Age in testnet the following way, as described by pakaran on the main forum (https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/40141-testnet-research-age/#entry190900):

Quote
Here's my draft tutorial:

So you want to help by running a testnet node, but don't know where to start?  Thanks in advance for your help.  The more people on testnet, the faster it will get confirmations, which makes things far easier for the development team.

Testnet is completely separate from mainnet; they run on different ports, so you can run both at the same time.

If you have specified an RPC port in your gridcoinresearch.conf file, see an important note below at the *.  Otherwise, your existing file will be used, and work properly, automatically.

In either case, move to the directory the executable is in (Windows users: Start -> run, type cmd, then enter
cd ProgramFiles/Gridcoinresearch/
and start the Gridcoin client with the --testnet argument:
Linux:
$ ./gridcoinresearch --testnet
 Windows:
gridcoinresearch.exe --testnet
You can also create a shortcut on Windows (or trivial shell script on Linux) to start the program with the appropriate argument.

Now let it run.  As with mainnet, you will need at least some coins to mine or stake.  At the moment, there is no fountain on testnet, so feel free to ask for some coins in this thread, or in the #gridcoin channel on Freenode IRC (if you don't have an IRC -- Internet Relay Chat -- client, there's a web-based one at https://webchat.freenode.net/, and you can just type #gridcoin under "Channels:").

Once you have coins, it's "hurry up and wait" time: you'll still need to send a beacon (if not done automatically), get into a superblock, and then wait for PoR/PoS rewards.

Thanks again for helping out!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*If you have specified an RPC port, then using the same configuration file will not work, since your main and testnet client will both attempt to attach to that port.  You will need to edit the file, and change the port number to a different one.

First off, copy your gridcoinresearch.conf file from ~/.GridcoinResearch/ to ~/.GridcoinResearch/testnet on Linux, creating the directory if necessary.  On Windows,  copy it from AppData/Roaming/GridcoinResearch/testnet to AppData/Roaming/GridcoinResearch/testnet.

Alternatively, you can create a new configuration file, remembering to set your BOINC email address if you want to mine rather than being an investor:
email=you@provider.com
In any case, change the RPC port in the "testnet" folder's copy of gridcoinresearch.conf to a different one, save, and THEN start the testnet client as outlined above.

I would suggest starting a new thread once ResearchAge is finished and then start with good documentation about setting up everything and explanation how the coin works exactly and then also try to be active around here.
92  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: August 02, 2015, 10:19:18 PM
Can someone explain what's happening with this coin for last 2 months?
I cant get the wallet sync. Wallet is 3.4.6.0 and stuck at 282412 block. It has active connections and says syncing.
Restarted multiple times, uninstalled, installed again. Same isue  Huh

The main forum is here so better ask for advice there: https://cryptocointalk.com/forum/464-gridcoin-grc/

However I can try to help. Have you tried doing these: http://wiki.gridcoin.us/FAQ#I_certainly_fell_off_the_consensus_chain.2C_how_to_get_back_on.3F

There were many many updates lately, the way how the Research Reward is paid out has changed and that's probably the reason for the problem.
93  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][FLO] Florin | The original tx msg coin | Blocktech Project Alexandria on: July 30, 2015, 01:01:47 AM
so I tried the alpha version of Alexandria and everything seems to work fine except when I want to see a video, then it shows "Plug-in required". Which plugin is required to view videos on Alexandria?
We're using VLC but the setup process, for now, depends on your OS. If you're on Windows, just install VLC from the VLC homepage.

As we move towards a beta release this will be pre-packaged within the app. For tech support hop on the Alexandria slack #tech-support channel.

Yes it works now, thank you very much!

It works very well, genius idea, hope this will become big!

you need to get a normal (interest) stake before the blockchain lists your RSA and you can earn Proof of Research coins.

But this defentiely happens within 14 days and the RAC lookback is 14 days, so none of your research done in that timeframe is lost.

good to hear it's all sorted out Smiley

wait is it not still possible to convert the coins? You can still convert them to Gridcoin Research afaik?

But hurry up, the conversion period is officially already over!

yes, also not working for me.

50,000 views on the infographic and still on the frontpage after 17 hours, with very positive feedback Smiley
