81  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 30, 2017, 01:17:40 AM
Is it true that it would be delisted on Bittrex? How about on other exchanges? Could anyone explain if this is true. I love hodling this coin cause I know it will go hyper on the coming hardfork and support from Obelisk on the release of ASIC Miner for the Siacoin network.
Who tell you this ?
I read about it somewhere, but now I really be stick on DYOR rather than reading on some groups.

That's simply false. Bittrex has actually been working with the Sia dev team to update their wallet software and correct their issues with deposits and withdrawals, which are working again. Why would they take so much trouble if they plan to delist the coin? Don't listen to the FUD out there.

Is there a rental rate sheet for those renting out there spare HD space?

You can check the table "Top 100 hosts average settings" at SiaStats to get an idea of what the most competitive hosts (thus those that get most of the file contracts) are using for pricing: https://siastats.info/hosts_network.html

Is there any sia hardfork happening on January 31st 2018?

Is this true ?  Shocked can someone explain in more detail .

There is a hardfork planned at block number 139000, approximately by the end of January. It is aimed to correct the mining Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm.

Take in mind this is a non-contentious fork: all the community, mining pools and infrastructure is accepting it. At such, there will not be a "split" in two coins, no airdrop. The old blockchain will be abandoned.

Looks like the hard fork hit. Via Sia's blog: hard fork on block 135,000
Did anyone notice a price difference due to this?

In everyone's experience. Do hard forks that increase mining difficulty decrease prices?

There was a hardfork at block 135000, but due to a bug in the Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm, a new hardfork was introduced on software version 1.3.1 to correct it. It will happen on block 139000, around the end of January.

How are they going to reach block 139,00 when the block time is over 3 hours? It'll take months meanwhile my deposit to the exchange, so I can sell this garbage, is stuck on 5/6 confirmations because it's to difficult to mine. I started this transfer 5 hours ago and Sia has not only lost value but lost the confidence of investors and miners to properly maintain their business correctly. I loved this coin but it's dead to me now.  Angry

That is absolutely false: the current average block time is 30 minutes due to the bug in the DAA, not 3 hours as you are claiming. So the hardfork will take place by the end of January, no matter what you think. You can check it here: https://siastats.info/mining.html in the last chart. I don't think there is any need to discuss with you your complains and personal opinions about the "confidence" of investors or miners. The "confidence of miners" can be however measured very easily and objectively: it is the network hashrate. And as you can see in the first chart of the previous link, it has actually increased in the past few days.

I'm thinking of removing my sia from the exchange.

how long will it take to sync and how much disk space does sia wallet require?
thanks

The blockchain is about 8.5GB big. If you are using SSD disks it will take less than 10 hours to synchronize. If you are using HDD disks it will be several days (2-3 days or more)

Interesting concept. It's just like Dropbox. Across how many computer would my data be duplicated if I were to store it on this platform? Would it be one, or say ten? Because if it's just one or two people and they decided to disconnect their computer, or their hard drive fails, then I would be doomed.

Each file is stored across 30 hosts with a 3x redundancy, using the Solomon-Reed algorithm for data distribution. This data distribution scheme ensures that even if 20 of those hosts go offline (whichever 20) the remaining 10 are enough to reconstruct the whole file and allow you to download the file.

Besides, hosts are heavily de-incentivized to drop or lose your files, as they lock Siacoins in the collateral that they lose if they don't keep your files with an uptime of 97% at least.

Any news on the block explorer allowing search by address yet?

The revamped new official explorer allows you to search by addresses: http://explore.sia.tech

I am hosting. What is your backup strategy that you not lost collateral?

Is it enought to save only all the config. I am not talking about my wallet files and seed this is clear that i not loose all my coins. Or is it mandatory to save the hole data what is uploaded ?

I recommend you this:

- My hosted data (the folders of renter's data) is in RAID arrays. So if one disk crashes, the data is never lost and I have time to replace it. Better RAID-5 or RAIDZ

- The installation of Sia and the metadata folders (those folders that in Windows are in %appdata%) backed up twice per day to an external disk (in my case the same RAID array of hosted data). This is less than 10GB. So if Sia, the host metadata or the OS crash, I can recover my SIa host from the backup.

Your issue is now resolved, so I think you should immediately edit your opening post with a huge bold opening text like "EDIT: the issue is now solved" or otherwise you are contributing to spread FUD, confusion and panic unnecessarily.

Just take a look at the posts before you posted it is now solved: most users do not read the whole thread and they are leaving it with the idea that this exchange is scamming innocent users

ok guys im stuck at 2-6 loading gui and says

difficulty adjustment hardfork incompatibility detected.  what should i do to up grade wallet.  win 10  thanks

1 - If Sia is open, close it completely by right-clicking the system try icon of Sia > "close"

2 - Download the latest version of the software (v1.3.1) that was released two days ago if you are still on version 1.3.0

3 - Delete the blockchain database (consensus.db file) to allow the client to sync it freshly again. This file is located in the following path: Users\<user>\appdata\roaming\Sia-UI\sia\consensus\consensus.db

SIA wallet synchronization time is slow! I did 5% in 2 days...Do you guys have this kind of problem too?

It is going to take several days (about 3 if it is continuously working) if you are using a HDD disk (mechanical), It takes less than 10 hours however if you are using a SSD disk. There is a trick for accelerating the initial sync: bootstrapping: https://siawiki.tech/daemon/bootstrapping_the_blockchain

Hi

I have send some coin to my wallet. Poloniex where i send it from said complete but i have still not got it in my wallet. it's about 12 hour since i send it. Any thin i need to do. Wallet is synchronized.
I have checked the address here https://explore.sia.tech/ and it said: Hash not found :< We couldn't find anything. The tx may have not been indexed yet, or there are simply no transactions from your address.

If the transaction is not shown in the Explorer, is because it was never really pushed to the network. Open a support ticket in Poloniex. The developing team is also working with some exchanges to try to help them solve their issues.

When I first dowloaded the wallet it was working fine for a few days and then it started to act up. Now I can even open it...I keep getting this error message all the time with the old wallet and I just updated to the new wallet...what's going on with these wallets? I'm using macOS.

A critical error loading Sia has occured: Siad unexpectedly exited. Error log: Sia Daemon v1.3.1

Looks like a database of your host folder get corrupted. Are you hosting storage in Sia? If not, you can safely delete the host folder to allow Sia to reconstruct that database. First close Sia, then delete the "host" folder:

- On Windows is located at C:/users/your_user/appdata/roaming/Sia-UI/sia
- On MacOS: $HOME/Library/Application Support/Sia-UI/sia/consensus

my coin is in sia mobile wallet, what should I do?

When launched, it give message "Unexpected end of stream"

The wallet no longer available in playstore to be updated

Download in your computer the official client (the Android app is not official) at https://sia.tech/apps/, wait until it is fully sync and use your recovery seed to access your funds
91  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 20, 2017, 08:29:26 PM

Version 1.3.1 just released!

Announcement post in Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/siacoin/comments/7l41hp/announcing_sia_v131/

Download: https://sia.tech/apps/

Instructions for updating, in case you are not familiar with the process: https://siawiki.tech/client/updating_the_interface

Take in mind this version is including a hardfork for correcting the Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm at block 139.000 (in about 5 weeks), so update your clients before that deadline!

Note: Like the last harfork, this is a non-contentious fork (all the community is accepting it and upgrading), so there will not be a new coin generated. In other words: this is not an "airdrop".
92  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 20, 2017, 07:16:20 PM
How come the wallet does not synchronize? do i need to do any thing?

It is an issue some users are experiencing after the hardfork of 2 weeks ago. It should be totally fixed on the version 1.3.1 that is about to be released.

In the meantime, if your wallet is stuck in synchronization try this workaround to add more peers manually: https://siastats.info/nodes.html

Have some newbie friends interested in this coin, shows that new crypto investors are finding sia among all the crypto madness.

2018 could be a great year for the price of Sia, forgive me i dont want to dig around but could anyone link me to a calculator or give me a rough idea of what kind of returns to expect from allocating hard drive space to sia? Thanks, happy holidays to sia community

SiaStats has a table with the average settings of the top 100 hosts of the network: https://siastats.info/hosts_network.html . When a renter makes file contracts, the client picks up those with a high score, so these top 100 are who get most of them. Currently they ask for 71SC/TB/month in storage and on average 20SC/Tb in bandwidth.

Currently there is much more storage offered by hosts than what is being used (a 3%) so currently it is not being profitable, unless you already have some empty TB sitting in a computer connected 24/7. However, once the usage increases it could be an interesting business: making about $1-2/TB/month you can ROI your disks in 18-24 months, and if you purchase NAS or datacenter-grade disks they will last 5 years or more. Electricity costs in hosting are irrelevant compared with mining (a 4-5 disks NAS box consumes less than 50W).

Happy Holidays too!

Hi

Some time back i downloaded sia wallet had a look at it and remove it again. Now i have bought some siacoin and want them in the wallet, but it ask for password that i dont have because i didn't have any use of it at that time. How do i fix this?

There is always a long password generated when you create your wallet, hopefully you have saved it somewhere.. have you ?

No i did not save it. Just had a look at it, to see how the wallet was. thought i could downloade it and open a new one, one's i decided  to buy siacoin. So is there a way i can make it forget my computer? Or can i use another computer to get a password and use that on my own?

If you didnt save the passphrase at the start of opening the wallet then there is no way to access those funds.

I dont have any funds there. I just download it that time to have a look at it. now i want to use it and send coin in to it. so there is no way i can open a new one on my computer?

There should be an option to generate password/backup the wallet once youre inside. Do you see those options?

I cant find where to generate new password or wallet.

Go to the UI Terminal and type this command: "wallet init --force". That will destroy your current wallet and create a new one, providing you a recovery seed. Alternatively you can just delete the old wallet folder. In Windows is located on c:/users?you_user/appdata/roaming/Sia-UI/sia/wallet On MacOS on $HOME/Library/Application Support/Sia-UI/sia/wallet

I read this new:

24- December SC 1.3.1 release
1.3.1 General Availability (public release) is expected next week.

I would love to know where those websites get their info from (pro tip: the fabricate it). We are very close to that version release, but  the developing never announces it for a specific date, they just release it as soon as it is ready. It can happen today, tomorrow or in one week, but that version is almost ready. Beta-testers have been testing the RC4 version these last days successfully

Hello Again.

Can any Dev reach HITBTC.com?

They have frozen all SIA deposit and withdrawals since more than 10 days ago and they do not reply in requests!

They dont even let you trade those you have in your main account!

can anyone suggest a dev active on bitcointalk.org that I can PM for this HitBTC matter?

No devs of Sia are active on Bitcointalk as this is not an official channel. To directly communicate with them use the Discord or also the Reddit.

As far as I know, devs are aware of issues with some exchanges and they are working with them, specially with Bittrex

Hello Hakkane, how can I make a backup of my host?
I have a Raid 1 server with 4x1,5 TB. if one day 2 hard drives break at the same time, all data will be lost.
Can I then simply replace the 2 broken disks or will i loose all collateral.
THX

LOL, I just answered you in Reddit  Cheesy I'll just add three details:

- Yes, if you have a total data loss, you'll lose the risked collateral

- While you can use backup tools to back your hosted data, I think RAID redundancy is enough for the task, and using an external disk to backup a RAID-1 array is probably a waste of resources (3 HDDs to keep the data equivalent to 1 disk is just too paranoid). Instead I would use other redundancy schemes as I told you in Reddit: RAID-5/6 or RAID-Z/Z2

- What I definitely recommend you to buck up daily (or even twice per day) is your Sia installatation and the external folders of Sia (in Windows located in %appdata%). Those are just a few GBs and if Sia gets corrupted and you don't have backups, you'll lose the whole hosting operation because the host database get corrupted. As I run Wndows Server, the native tool is enough for me.

Looks like you know a lot about Sia, are you a community manager?
I was wondering where I can get a full instruction how to mine Sia, I think it has great potential and would like to understand how to mine it, maybe you can recommend with what and how should I start? Thanks

No, I am not related to Nebulous, the company of Sia developers. I am a moderator of the official Discord and an independent developer (the author and owner of https://siastats.info). And of course an enthusiast of Sia too  Cool

Sure thing: another relevant contributor of Sia made this awesome guide about how to start mining Sia in Windows: https://mtlynch.io/windows-sia-mining/

I just checked because I wanted to know if it was under ICO price, maybe I would invest in this coin, but it has an almost half a billion marketcap, so you couldn't be doing too  bad I guess.

Take in mind Siacoin never had an ICO, it is a coin mined by PoW. The developers only pre-mined the first 100 blocks (less than one day of pre-mining). So it is coin that was fairly launched, like every good coin should be...
97  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 18, 2017, 05:48:21 PM
Guys, do you have data on how many clients store files in your network?

As the network is decentralized and pseudo-anonymous, it is impossible to know the precise amount of unique users.

However we know that the network has 66000 active file contracts: https://www.siastats.info/active_contracts.html If we assume that each renter makes 50 contracts with different hosts (default configuration), that means 1320 renters. If 1 user = 1 renter, then we can say there are approximately 1300 Sia users.

We have a better idea of the usage in terms of used storage in the network. SiaStats.info reports almost 99TB of used storage of a total of 3200TB available (https://www.siastats.info/hosts_network.html) and SiaHub.info reports 103TB of used storage of a total of 3300TB available (https://siahub.info/network)
98  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage on: December 18, 2017, 01:51:07 PM
dam me to i have a withdraw what not show on my wallet

Check the transaction ID ("hash" or "TxID") in https://explorer.siahub.info/ on the "hash" search box.

- If it doesn't show any result, the transaction does not exist on the blockchain. Open a support ticket on the exchange.

- If it exists, check that your Client is fully sync. If it says it is sync but in a block height under 137200, or you are having problems syncing, follow the instructions at: http://siastats.info/nodes.html

1600 contract and 50000 sia coin went to fork cause the new version will not load after I upgraded from 1.2.1 to 1.3.1  Says it encounters a fatal error and then hangs with error messages. \

Check this post for solving those issues: https://blog.sia.tech/troubleshooting-the-recent-hardfork-ca77e0b17f0f

BTW, coins are never lost because of a wallet issue. This is a blockchain: coins do not live in wallets, but in the blockchain, and as long as you keep the recovery seed, you'll have access to your funds
Thanks for the link!!
I was/am mostly concerned about the contracts I have built up, and the hosting service.  It it took me forever to get up to volume of hosting contracts.  Any idea what the time frame is before host defaults and looses the collateral due to server MIA.

NP! Yes, you are required an uptime of 97%. Even if you have 2-3 days of downtime every 3 months, you are still good.

I am concerned that as you have not updated your client since last week when the hardfork took place, you might have lost some storage proofs, and so some contracts might be failing... Nevertheless the reputation of your host as observed by the renters should be good as even if your host was outdated and forked out, your data was available.

But try to restart your host as soon as possible: delete the consensus and sync your client again. If you are using a HDD for the installation instead of an SSD, consider bootstrapping to save time: https://siawiki.tech/daemon/bootstrapping_the_blockchain

And if you find problems not being able to sync the last blocks, try this fix: http://siastats.info/nodes.html

Error message read the following:  do not see this type of error on the blog with link above.
Will try dropping the Consensu.db and reloading.  I was late to update so maybe I am stuck on a fork.
what do I need to delete to reload the blockchain but keep my wallet keys?

A critical error loading Sia has occured: Siad unexpectedly exited. Error log: Loading...
(0/6) Loading siad...
(1/6) Loading gateway...
(2/6) Loading consensus...
Closing gateway...
difficulty adjustment hardfork incompatibility detected

That error is one of the described in that link. Close Sia completely (in Windows, clock close on "Close" on the system try icon), delete the consensus folder, open Sia again and let the client to sync the blockchain again.

By this way you are just deleting the blockchain. Your recovery seed will be always good to recover your funds. In this or in any other computer
