Does your internet connection have any trouble with processing all the getwork requests for 35 GH/s?  Do you think you could do double or triple what you are doing now without any problem?  What sort of internet connection and router do you use?

My operation currently lives in three separate areas, roughly 12 GH/s each. Each connection is basically fed by a low bandwidth cellular connection (8Mbit down, 1Mbit up) of sorts. I have no problems keeping up in any of them. As for router, I just use off-the-shelf basic home routers. Even when doing large downloads or remoting into the boxes, I see no degradation in hash rate. One minor note, I do use a network switch that runs into the router, which runs into the cellular wireless modem.

Edit: There should be no problems doubling or tripling capacity on these connections.

So, look forward to some great deals on GPU hardware come October-December.  Wink

is that october-december 2012, 2013 or 2014?

If Butterfly Labs is to be believed, 2012.

What is your reaction to the concept that it may be possible by this October to have 40 Gh/s for $1300? Do you a) doubt this is true, b) already have orders placed with BFL, c) plan to wait and see, d) plan to sell your farm soon, e) something else?

I'm not trying to be obnoxious here by asking this - just wondering what your thoughts are as someone who has recently built a large farm.

Great question Dargo. To be honest, I believe BFL is the real deal and knowing a little about ASIC I fully expect they will be able to deliver the performance they are advertising. Although I have no idea on the time-frame or speed of keeping up with demand. I plan to place a pre-order with BFL, but not sure to what extent yet.

Not to discourage anyone, but the days are numbered for GPU miners, just as it was for CPU mining, if what is claimed is true. According to Bit-Pay, they hit a record number of transactions processed in one day. That was primarily attributed to BFL opening up pre-orders. Calculations estimate that pre-orders through Bit-Pay alone could account for about 8 TH/s of ASIC hardware. Unknown bank wires and other payments not included. Presently the network is somewhere around 12-13 TH/s.

So my estimate is this, assuming all that has been announced and promised is true: By beginning of November, the difficulty will have doubled to 25 TH/s. This means your mined coins per day will be cut in half. By the end of December, payout will cut in half again due to the scheduled reduction in rewards in the bitcoin algorithm. At this point, your mining operation will only be yielding roughly 1/4 of what it did before. Price should slowly climb, but it will take quite a while for that to occur. We've got to remember there are over 9 million coins already issued. This will change as it becomes easier for the common people to interact with bitcoin.

So, if your operation is costing you more than 25% of your gross earnings, you may want to think about a graceful exit strategy from GPUs. My guess is difficulty will temporarily take a heavy drop somewhere in the middle as the GPU exodus occurs, but will be picked back up by people reinvesting back into ASIC.

Remember though, not everything is certain aside from the reward drop in half around December. BFL coild fail to deliver on time or performance. One should keep a close eye on price AND difficulty along with ongoing expenses when determining when to exit GPU mining. In the meantime, keep spreading the word about bitcoin!

Hey Pirate, I greatly appreciate the service GPUMAX provides. It's been awesome in the short time I've had it working. At this moment, my miners don't seem to be connected to GPUMAX at all.

I assume one of two things:
  • I got suspended because my miners connect from three separate internet connections (but the same service provider)
  • You're tweaking stuff at the moment

If banning people, might I suggest banning people who far exceed their estimated hashing power when they signed up. Perhaps set the threshhold to 1.5x or something. Lots of people are doing creative things to keep their operations going, especially those of us who are beyond 20 GH/s. Often this means spreading out gear across different locations and service providers.

If anyone can confirm whether GPUMAX is currently up and running or not, that'd be appreciated. As of now, I get the feeling I've been suspended. Sad

Mine seem fine atm.  I don't think comparing the registered rate and actual rate is feasible.  I applied for gpumax in January at 1.5GH, by the time I had been accepted I had grown to ~4.2GH and now at 7.  If I can come up with a feasible protection method for pirate, I'll be sure to voice it.  It's a shame that abusers have cost me since I too have two locations I mine from (on different subnets).

Perhaps I've been banned because my operation is large and may be mistaken for running a pass-through. I've got 35 GH/s from 3 separate locations and IPs, same internet service provider (only about 25 GH/s running through GPUMAX).

Pirate, if you are reading this, how can I get my account re-activated? PM you my account address?

I'm pretty sure once the ASIC solutions are shipped, GPU mining will effectively be dead. I personally run a 35GH/s mining operation and can confidently say that as far as efficiency goes, I've squeezed every last drop out that there is to be had. Despite this and economies of scale, there's no way my operation can keep up with their reported $1300 box (40GH/s) and its insignificant power consumption. My bills for the month to keep the operation running are roughly half the price of one of these new 40GH/s rigs.

So, look forward to some great deals on GPU hardware come October-December.  Wink

Hey all, I am new to posting on these forums, but not new to bitcoin. I've been mining for about a year and have grown my bitcoin mining operation to roughly 35 GH/s. Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to provide all the answers I can to help you with your efforts.

Cheers!

88  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are Bitcoins legal? on: June 29, 2012, 06:34:15 PM
There are services where you can trade bitcoin for physical silver/gold. Depending on what state you live in, you could then legally sell your gold or silver for cash and not be taxed on the sale. As for whether you pay capital gains on selling the silver, that's hard to say since the value you got in at and value you get out at are somewhat arbitrary or debatable. I am not a lawyer, don't take this as advice or fact without doing your own independent research.

Running a 5770 at 960 is pretty extreme. You could lower your power consumption by pushing the memory clock down to 150 MHz. I run all of mine at 150.

At 920 MHz, I get something like 220 MH/s on a 5770. I don't know anything about 5750 cards.

I started off following a bit of history about the federal reserve in the US. This led me to start looking into precious metals. Along the way, I discovered a youtube member who happened to do a lot of videos on bitcoin and precious metals. Ultimately, I took up the bitcoin experiment and have been growing ever since.
91  Other / Beginners & Help / Is GPUMAX Down? on: June 29, 2012, 05:51:21 PM
I recently read that GPUMAX was going to begin suspending accounts that had two or more IP addresses from different subnets. As of now, GPUMAX isn't picking up any of my miners. I do have three separate internet connections for all my miners, but they all use the same service provider.

Anyone know the state of things regarding GPUMAX?
