81  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 8th Alt coin thread. Or what to do now that asics are all over the place. on: November 10, 2018, 08:26:34 PM
And how do they get the miners to deploy a new mining software version every 10 days?
I sense a major nightmare in that idea.

I hear what you are saying, but what is the difference between that and updating to a new version?

Exactly my point - having to deploy a new version of the mining software every 10 day basis would be a NIGHTMARE.

To the other comment about pre-defining the algorithms - do that, and an ASIC can be designed to do the same thing.
82  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 8th Alt coin thread. Or what to do now that asics are all over the place. on: November 10, 2018, 08:23:55 PM
the best way to overwhelm an asic is timing;   if you can design the algo to necessitate a linear flow of programming of the FPGA;  it's advantages will pretty much be negated....

Which would ALSO kill the advantages of GPUs to a major degree and modern multi-core CPUs to a noticeable degree.
83  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: US Tariff Ruling N297495 = 2.6% mandatory tariff on bitcoin mining hardware on: November 08, 2018, 10:26:13 PM
I wonder how it would affect the 25% part when it's pointed out that the VAST BULK of the value of a miner is the ASIC chips that are manufactured in Taiwan (TSMC) or Korea (Samsung) and NOT in China.

85  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain will be releasing S15 and T15 on 8/11/2018 on: November 08, 2018, 10:18:26 PM
guys, S15 is crap. like comeone..2k usd with all customs, shipings, etc and doin 6usd per day with free electricity and 2.5usd with 0.1per kwh..
count the ROI ffs..2000usd price and 2,5usd per day...so 800days IF all stays same (diff, hash) which do not stay, everyone know that, right. it is better to buy BTC now for 2k usd, like 0.3 or so and u save nerves, noise, electricity.

someone who has free electricity, better buy S9i 14.5TH included PSU for 400usd+customs. 2x S9j still better hash than s15 and u still save money like 2x (600-700usd) vs 2000usd.

Ebang E11++ is doing 44TH / 1900W on 10nm samsung...and cost around 2000-2500usd...

if S15 would cost 800usd, i would buy one, but in this case..of course they make quality machines (i havent had any trouble with them)

Don't forget to factor in the cost of 2 power supplies for the S9 option - and the MUCH lower efficiency that will eliminate it's profitability in the not-too-distant future.

ProgPOW approved for grant by ZcashFoundation:
https://github.com/ZcashFoundation/GrantProposals-2018Q2/issues/15

"FPGAs, GPUs and CPUs can themselves be considered ASICs."

Makes me wonder about the entire proposal when they can get a basic fact like that SO TOTALLY WRONG.

87  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain will be releasing S15 and T15 on 8/11/2018 on: November 07, 2018, 08:10:34 PM
1500/34000 = too good too be true.

44 watts a th is head and shoulders better then the m10 which is about 68 to 70 watts a th.

But they did claim under 50 watts a th.

Same ballpark as Bitfury's "Clarke" chip.
Bitmain does have a history of getting higher performance out of a node than most of the competition (though Bitfury is usually in the same ballpark).

Innosilicon in particular tends to be lower performance on a given node than Bitmain manages (there are persistant rumors that the Innosilicon A3 was never released because it was no better to worse performance than the chip that Bitmain used in the S7 on an older node).
88  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: US Tariff Ruling N297495 = 2.6% mandatory tariff on bitcoin mining hardware on: November 06, 2018, 09:32:22 PM
This is exactly what happened to us. We received a mid 6 figure bill for things we imported before any of this was even a law.

Constitutional violation, under the "ex-post-facto" part.

This SHOULD be fightable.

Are there any known asic chips manufactured/produced in China?

No - they don't have the capability of producing 16nm or smaller chips at all.
I'm not sure if they can even produce 28nm.
89  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Rumor that Bitmain is going belly up! can't pay its chip builder! on: November 06, 2018, 09:01:23 PM
Interesting read. Hard to tell how much truth there is to it. I know there have been the rumors of a failed chip design, I think you mentioned something about a second even.

It's been fairly widely reported that Bitmain had "risk chip failures" on at least one 7/10nm design - but no details on if it was the design that failed or the process.

S15 and T15 ... all the S10-11-12-13-14 went to trash ?

Even model numbers were traditionally "server size" designs - and haven't been done for a long while.

I suspect the S13 was the intended model that they had failures on their "risk dies" order(s).
90  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain will be releasing S15 and T15 on 8/11/2018 on: November 06, 2018, 08:59:44 PM
It will take a while for the 7/10nm generation miner makers to make enough miners to push the difficulty up to the point the S9 becomes unprofitable if you have VERY cheap electric - but that point will get reached eventually.
91  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FutureBit Project Apollo: Bringing ASIC Mining Back to the Home Miner! on: November 06, 2018, 08:52:49 PM
Should be able to stack them if you put them on their sides though?

Heatsink looks amazingly like the Alpha series ones I used to have on my Athlon 1800+ CPUs - but a little shorter.

The connector used for PCI-E 6-pin applications is capable of handling 8 amps per pin, or 96 watts per pin - PCI-E specs are EXTREMELY conservative for those connectors even though they only "normally" use 2 of the pins for +12VDC and one for sense.
If you are using all 3 pins for +12VDC (most power supplies are designed to do this) a single connector *should* be fine for up to 288 watts - 192 if you're only using 2 +12VDC pins for power.

Z9 mini is fairly quiet - and will probably become a space heater in about a year.
93  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] ❤ Medic Coin ❤ Folding@Home GPU Mining Masternode Coin on: November 04, 2018, 08:22:38 PM
Any idea when you will get listed on a major exchange like Bittrex?
I'd ignore Poloniex, they seem to dislike folding-related coins.

We are working with CrytalDash. Hope you like it.

I specified MAJOR exchange.

I've never even heard OF this "crytaldash" thing before.

95  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining performance of Nvidia RTX 2080 Series on: October 31, 2018, 04:58:01 PM
Seems at current price levels RTX series is unprofitable at all.

It's not that the RTX series is UNprofitable, it's that it has a lower profit-to-cost ratio than the older 10xx series.

I don't understand why Nvidia went crazy-high on the pricing on the 20xx series, seems like they're shooting themselves in the foot to a large degree with that decision for such a small improvement in performance to their MAIN market (Gaming).
96  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 8th Alt coin thread. Or what to do now that asics are all over the place. on: October 31, 2018, 04:49:26 PM

This way, we can point "irrelevant" ASICs like L3+ or D3s to Prohashing to "mine" our choice of coins - avoiding those investment turning into door-stoppers.

In summary, any old ASICs (as long as they are not power hoggers) can be revived and sent to work at Prohashing gulag camp...... and get any coin we want (well almost any coin)

D3's ARE power hogs - but still profitable if you have cheap enough power.
Don't have to use prohashing to get whatever coin you want - can just use an exchange.

GTX 1070 the last couple weeks has been bouncing between ETH and Ravencoin for highest profitability on the major coins but it's been VERY close - normally less than 1 cent per day difference.

Don't have any 1060s or 5xx series AMDs.

98  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 8th Alt coin thread. Or what to do now that asics are all over the place. on: October 22, 2018, 06:31:09 PM

I'm still seeing well over 27 Mhash on ETH on my R9 290s - I suspect it's more the sheer size of the DAG file that is making them slow down from the about 30 they managed 2 years ago, more than TLB thrashing.
No, they're not running at stock clocks - though I did have to run them at stock core clock this summer due to the long-running serious heat wave we had for more like 25 Mhash.

What settings do you use?

They have one of TheStilt bioses on them (I forget which level of undervolt offhand) and I usually run them at 1100/1450 when they don't overheat at that setting.
Sapphire reference models with the blower - which blows an amazing amount of air, I had one die and replaced it with a Delta "screamer" 68cfm regular fan and it was blowing noticeably LESS air.

Maybe yours had a better ASIC quality however I could never get any of them to run at 1100mhz, the most I could get is 1050mhz and it used tons of electricity and tons of heat even when undervolted to the max.

It seems that you can probably sell a R9 290 on eBay and buy an RX 470/570 with some cash to spare, seems like its a better bet these days especially when on stock clock these are hitting 23.5mh/s these days and with an RX 470 you can get 28MH/s easily.

They still run hot, but they never managed to stay at stock clocks without overheating and throttling before I put TheStilt BIOS on them.
I don't deal with eBay - had way too many issues back when I did sell stuff there, ended up losing too much money over bogus "bad item" complaints - and don't even get me STARTED on their insistance on Paypal when I was a member of the class of the FIRST class action lawsuit against THAT ripoff company. There's a reason eBay SOLD Paypal back off - WAY too many legal complaints and problems and lack of profitability when Paypal is forced to operate LEGALLY.
99  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 8th Alt coin thread. Or what to do now that asics are all over the place. on: October 19, 2018, 06:22:16 PM
I'm supposed to be picking up 6 x EVGA 1070's tomorrow from a local seller for $200/each; with all rig parts (frame, cpu, mobo, PSU, RAM, risers, etc) thrown in for a grand total of $1200 for the whole bundle.

What do you guys think? Good deal or would you rather hold off to see what AMD brings in the form of 7nm? I don't expect a 7nm release from Nvidia any time soon so not too worried there.

They are making pretty much diddly squat @ my current rate of $0.13/kWh, but I can't imagine 1070's depreciating much below $200 in the next year or two (much less nice EVGA models). I basing this partially off the fact that I sold my old 970 (a generation older mind you) a month or two ago for $150, and partially by looking at the cost of a new RTX 2070 relative to it's performance increase.

If I had the $1200 I'd be all over that deal JUST for the cards.
Even at your rate they should be profitable (though not by much) at efficient settings on ETH, and there are a couple small-cap things they'd do better one.

I'm not seeing deals like that out here at ALL, but I'm sure that very few cryptocoin miners in this area are giving up yet due to the still low (for now) electric rates.
