81  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-04-24: Zerocoin Video Presentation at Microsoft Research on: May 23, 2013, 01:42:01 AM
What is zerocoin?  Is that this week's new alt coin?

It's a proposed extension to Bitcoin that would make it anonymous.
82  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC buying power of Gold!?!? on: May 23, 2013, 01:35:28 AM
Bitcoin is virtual gold: it has all the properties of gold, where "tangible" is replaced with "knowledgeable" for the lack of better word. Bitcoin is information.

Bitcoin already has an advantage because it can't be rehypothecated and can be carried/transferred around in pure information form. Bitcoin will gain more advantage when the price of gold goes high enough so that it's economically feasible to start mining asteroids for gold: The supply of gold will keep on increasing as the price goes up.
83  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / A very good and thorough Microsoft Research talk about Bitcoin and Zerocoin on: May 23, 2013, 01:11:24 AM
http://research.microsoft.com/apps/video/dl.aspx?id=192058

The site has slides and transcription too. I'm only 1/4 in, but so far it has been very, very good. If you still have some questions about how Bitcoin works, I highly recommend this video.

84  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-04-24: Zerocoin Video Presentation at Microsoft Research on: May 23, 2013, 12:57:46 AM
The transcript and slides are available from the same page.. didn't notice it at start. Anyone know any good tools to overlay the slides with the video? I could do that and upload it to youtube and see how long it takes for MS to take it down Wink
85  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-04-24: Zerocoin Video Presentation at Microsoft Research on: May 23, 2013, 12:43:01 AM
MS employees researching Bitcoin and Zerocoin? Thanks, this is big.

Well, some of us out in the real world were warning about letting gangsters from Chicago into the White House.

Quite a while back.  Back around 2008.

So who wants to laugh about the Tea Party, all those stupid tea baggers, knuckle dragging morons from the deep south, religious nutcase whackos,  now?

(TEA = Taxed enough already)

Good job, much appreciated. I reside outside of US, but otherwise I would have joined the action I'm sure.

The middle-class has been squashed and lost it's voice. Lower-class relies on the foodstamps and will vote for more, no matter the cost. Higher-class has the wealth to lobby and exercise dubious tax planning. It's sad that middle class, who's carrying the biggest burden of taxes, has no say in taxation nor has the power to avoid them.

But then again, the disappearance of the middle class has often been followed by the total collapse of the empire. Hope we are getting very close to this; the world would be much better off without the US and the IMF.

Now please understand that I do think that govts are slowly becoming the biggest mobs in the world and we the people should start saying no. You're doing it by operating under the radar via Bitcoin and all my kudos to you, but I would recommend you to hide your tracks better or the bureaucratic machinery will take you down.
89  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Legality of Polimedia/MPOE/MPEX/BitBet on: May 22, 2013, 10:30:06 PM
What exactly would be the link between these things, other than you?

There are plenty of links, let me list a couple:

92  Economy / Economics / Re: Japan. The Yen. The Hyperinflation. on: May 22, 2013, 09:44:21 PM
This lady has been putting out nice updates about the Japanese situation:

http://youtu.be/AR3TyfKTeNE

TL;DR; Parasitic rich investors/hedge funds are using near-zero interest rates to borrow from Japan and buying high-yield assets (carry trade) like the european bonds. This will suppress the prices of non-yielding assets like gold and yen and add to the housing/bond bubble. However, there's a high risk that sometime in the near future people will stop accepting the rapidly declining yen and stop buying Japanese Goverment Bonds(JGB) because the yield/risk ratio is off. This should trigger:

  a) hyper-inflation if Bank of Japan(BOJ) continues easing and buys even a bigger share of JGBs
  b) dramatic increase in japanese bond yields (interest rates) that would pretty much destroy the japanese economy that is already spending a large portion of their GDP on interest payments

Bonus: Japan has been the biggest external buyer of US Treasury Bonds(T-Bonds). Once the shit hits the fan domestically, they probably have to stop this. This means that T-Bond yields will increase -> interest rates will increase and the same scenario could take place in the US.

94  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Here's where I spew my accusations against MPOE. All are welcome. on: May 22, 2013, 11:52:00 AM
There has being times where bitcoin-qt fucks up and sends it with an improper fee, so it pretty much never gets confirmed.

Also, you mean if the bet is resolved when your TX isn't confirmed yet, right?

Yes.

The thing is, the way BitBet is set up once a bet is marked to close early this doesn't become effective until the blockchain watcher has seen one new block. It's not immediate.

Obviously qt might malfunction. The solution there is to use better Bitcoin clients.

Thanks for clearing that up
95  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Holy Grail! I wish I could kiss the author of Bitmessage on his face. on: May 22, 2013, 12:12:30 AM
While I love the idea of BitMessage, it has never worked when I've tried it. Me or my counter-parties never received the messages we sent.

If/when it starts to work as it it's supposed, it has the potential to become an important tool alongside Bitcoin for decentralized and pseudonymized transactions.
96  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Legality of Polimedia/MPOE/MPEX/BitBet on: May 21, 2013, 06:54:23 AM
all they need in their TOS is something like this:

Disclaimer: We are not licensed in any country but XYZ.  If your country is not XYZ and it requires a license to do X, Y or Z, then we cannot offer you this service.

Their FAQ (for the lack of TOS) has no mention of country they are operating in. Heck, doesn't even have the word operate or law on it.

In case the domain is confiscated or otherwise lost MPEx will move to a different domain, in a different jurisdiction. Should the same happen again, MPEx would move to what will at the time be a solid alternative for a free Internet, be it the TOR network, namecoin or some equivalent DNS or any comparable solution. No government will ever be able to stop the Internet, in general. We're prepared to show this in the particular.

All they say is that they would move onto a different jurisdiction and that goverment can't stop the internet.
97  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Legality of Polimedia/MPOE/MPEX/BitBet on: May 21, 2013, 06:50:20 AM
That is a big ball of crazy, and a lot to cover. What is your question, exactly?

I guess I just wanted to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks this ball of crazy might not be legal at all.

How would a jury start unravel the ball of crazy? Say if an MPEX customer came up and said that he can't access his equity, MPEX doesn't respond and the customer would file a lawsuit.
98  Bitcoin / Legal / Legality of Polimedia/MPOE/MPEX/BitBet on: May 20, 2013, 09:33:18 PM
It is very likely that Polimedia SRL (Romanian limited liability) is breaking at bare minimum the Romanian law in three ways, there might be more and some international ones too. First there's gambling without a license (bitbet.us):

Quote
Gambling License Romania
The authorization/organization of the activity of gambling in Romania is governed by State monopoly.

The State can grant the right of setting up the activity of games of chance according to the law, on the basis of a license, for the organization of each type of games of chance. The games of chance are classified as follows:

• Games of chance whose winning conditions are dependent upon random elements, with the use of gambling machines which are operated manually, mechanically, electrically, electronically, video automatically or in other similar ways. In order to play and win these games, they require the player’s ability or dexterity, light hand and also the chance, the hazard (the type of Atlantic pusher, Niagara);
• Casino games of chance
• Bingo, Keno type of games of chance, which take place in special game rooms;
• Sports Bets, Lotteries and Raffles , along with television Bingo and Keno;
• Contest-Games, with any type of wins, organized through telephone lines or any other means of telecommunication.

http://www.rolegal.com/romania-gambling-license.html

Secondly there's stocks/options/futures trading without a license (mpex.co):

Quote
All securities trading in Romania is carried out by brokerage companies called Financial Investment Services Companies (FISC) licensed by the NSC and established according to law 297/2004.

The law itself AFAIK is only available in Romanian.

Thirdly they are not following the limitations imposed on limited liability companies in Romania (polimedia/mpex.co):

Quote
Limited Liability Companies are not permitted to:

 - Undertake banking or insurance activities or any other activity that might suggest an association with same, without a licence.
 - Undertake investment business other than the investment of the company's own assets without a licence.
 - Neither solicits funds from the public nor offer their shares or membership to the public without a licence.

Could someone more educated in the subject weight in please?
99  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Here's where I spew my accusations against MPOE. All are welcome. on: May 20, 2013, 04:48:47 AM
I just noticed the house bets.. So they are betting with their shareholders money on bets that they will resolve later themselves.. No wonder they break their own policies when placing/resolving bets.
100  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Here's where I spew my accusations against MPOE. All are welcome. on: May 20, 2013, 04:47:22 AM
MPEX is not the only service where they outright confiscate peoples BTC. 50% of BitBet.us dividends came from confiscated customer Bitcoins:

Quote
Revenue : 52.41062758 BTC, of which :

bets resolved : 18.89598891 BTCii
advertising : 3 BTC
house bets won : 4.70571706 BTCiii
gracious donations to shareholders : 25.80892161 BTC

http://polimedia.us/trilema/2013/bitbet-april-2013-statement/

So what are "gracious donations to shareholders"? They are bets that are placed when the a bet was still open, but get's closed before your bet TX is confirmed by miners. So say you are about to bet 10 BTC on "Yes" for "North Korea will launch more missiles during May". If North Korea launches the missiles while you're sending the TX for the bet, BitBet.us will just keep the Bitcoins and not return them.
