801  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: ASICMiner Block Erupter USB group buy (US/Canada) on: May 06, 2013, 09:18:37 PM
I just want to make sure the math is right:

Minimum Order 300 units @ 1.99/unit = 597 btc to factory

2% escrow fee to John K on 597 btc = 608.94 btc total needed for a shipment

297 units required to ship (not counting 3 for OP organizing fee)

608.94 / 297 = 2.0503030303... each

.05/unit shipping (that's shipping to our door, not from factory; factory shipping is free).

2.0503030303 + .05 = 2.100303030303

Right?

What's the extra .001 for?

Also, this is a minimum purchase of 300.  Does that mean if we get more demand we can go over 300?  Are we cutting off at exactly 300?
802  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group Buy#1] Avalon ASICs CHIPS! Using JohnK as escrow! FINISHED! on: May 06, 2013, 07:53:05 PM
Fair enough. Right now I'm looking at sending 480 chips to a local assembly plant, so I might end up letting some other people send me their chips to get in on it as well. Not sure which PCB I'm going to use, though. Burnin's is attractive because 20 chips per board means I can chain more together before I have to add another controller. Bkkcoins' is attractive because it's open source, which means I feel I can trust it more and have my boards printed locally, which means I might get them sooner than I would when ordering from Burnin.

I like the 20 chips per board from burnin, but bkkcoin has a 16 chip board and a 1 chip board, so that'd be cool too.

If you are already organizing something with a local plant, you might make a few extra btc organizing something for the group.  What part of the US are you located in?

You could see if there's a PCB assembly plant near you. I might also start taking PCBs and chips for assembly, though I have to admit I'm probably no more qualified for the job than most people. I'll see if I can get some quotes from the plants around where I live.

Seems like a PCB assembly plant may be a bit overkill for 20 chips.  :\

Burnin just posted that he'll be opening up orders in the next week.  Do we have any updates on the plans for US PCB development?

Raginazn says he's got something in the works. If that doesn't work out, though, I may look at producing Bkkcoins' PCBs here on the west coast. I'm also considering ordering plain PCBs from Burnin and having them assembled here once the chips arrive. (In that case I'd be taking a bet that the PCBs arrive faster than the chips, though.)

Are BKKcoin's PCBs the ones with 16 chips on them?  What happens if I have 20 chips?  Anyone gonna copy the little USB dongles being bantered about?

You can get two 10 x 10 PCB from BKK and put 10 and 10 or 8 and 12.... that is the option. Go to the KLONDIKE thread for BKKcoins idea. For Burin I think he was thinking double density so 20 on his board might be possible. Check his thread as well.

Yea I had heard about the double density, but I'm in US so I don't want to wait for chips to come to US, get shipped to Germany to be added to PCB boards so they can be shipped BACK to the US to me.

Yea I'd be interested.  Would like to know more about pricing before I commit though.

Isn't this a bitcoind exclusive setup?  Isn't that all Gavin is responsible for?  Can't other clients still publish no fee tx's to the network?  Why is everyone so doom and gloom about bitcoin in general?  This is just one release of a bitcoin wallet, amirite?

Given the price and the power, I see this more as a way to make Bitcoin more distributed than a way to make money.
Though I still think it would be best if Bitcoin only ran on commodity hardware.

You also have to remember that some of us don't really want to make insane profits but rather want a way to retrieve bitcoin not connected with the exchanges.  Mining takes the bitcoin attached to my identity and converts it into bitcoin not attached to my identity.  If I can break even then that's worth it to me.

I understand this is informal ATM, but I assume escrow will be involved?
811  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: ASICMiner Block Erupter USB group buy on: May 04, 2013, 07:29:44 PM
I might be interested in 1-2

Currently I only collect non-binding interest.
Just post the desired quantity and destination here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=195037.0

With sufficient interest, we can plan more accurately.
Antistatic packaging etc

This thread you've linked to is German.  I assume this is located in Germany? Smiley  Anyone in US looking to participate in group buy?  I'm in for 1.
812  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Block Erupter USB on: May 04, 2013, 03:30:19 PM
First congratulations these devices look great and in a word ... cute.  But I agree with others about the price point, I thought people were over bidding for the blades.  I have a bigger problem with the cute USB dongle.  I am looking more for a blade or a big box that really pumps the hashes out.  What are people going to do, try and have 30+ of these hanging off a PC?  It is almost as if the USB dongles are meant for 'casual' miners to just plug in their laptop while they are on the go.

I'm trying to get an avalon blade through one of the group buys for chips; but this seems like something you can have for the novelty of it.  Plug one in your laptop while surfing the net; adding 1/3 GH/s is laudable, plus it takes (I assume) very little power.
813  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Block Erupter USB on: May 04, 2013, 03:29:01 PM
Awesome product.
Unfortunately, your price point is, to be blunt, retarded.

Well, considering that a video card that makes 300 MH/s is about $150 right now (My XFX 6870 from eBay used cost me $70), I'd say it's a little hefty in the price range.  What does one of these draw?  I'm assuming about 5 or 6 watts vs a video card's 100 or so?  Big difference.

I'd like two; someone please point me in the right direction for participating in a group buy and I'm there.

I have a question about the JSON.  Right now the recent rounds JSON looks kind of like this:

Code:
{
   "blocks": {
      "234240": {
         "is_mature": 1,
         [...]
      },
      "234241": {
         "is_mature": 1,
         [...]
      }
   }
}

Shouldn't it be

Code:
{
   "blocks": [
      "234240": {
         "is_mature": 1,
         [...]
      },
      "234241": {
         "is_mature": 1,
         [...]
      }
   ]
}

As in, the blocks should be an array?

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to loop through the blocks object's inner objects without an array.  Others who have parsed this, can I get a little assistance?

Coins aren't such a fine idea...

I'm not sure about how well now days the absolute silver and other metal contents could be detected, reliably on the site by anyone. In past currency debasement was rather common I have understood. And it's rather hard to track various circulating currencies in such case and there will be many.

Yes, debasement was common historically, but it's difficult to mint coins as an individual and small denominations (in silver) aren't usually worth the trouble.  The bigger problem was shaving; where someone would shave little bits off of every coin and save that.  This was mitigated by having reeded edges, so you could see if they'd been shaved.

You can hear the sound of a silver coin vs a coin in other metal if you listen for it.

Money was NOT made to be hoarded but to be used for changing! For trade, so goods can be assigned to another identity! With hoarding you break all the good rules of an economic system ,thats it!

Money was made to represent value.  What I do with that value that I accumulate is my business.  If an economic system cannot withstand people accumulating value to spend during a time of need or to pass to another generation then it is a bad economic system IMHO.

One side argues that spending makes the world go around, until we leverage ourselves so far that we have to contract.  The other side argues for austerity to the point where people are starving so governments can pay back pension loans.  I say you are all throwing shit at a wall and expecting it to stick.

You think Bitcointalk is still relevant to mining hardware.

 Fuck you asshole. Where the fuck do you think your first customers came from ?

 Eat a bag of dicks.

Little known fact; a bag of dicks contains exactly 17 dicks.  It is known as a "hooker's dozen".

Trying to deal with small amounts of gold or silver in traditional bullion forms is significantly more difficult than paper notes.

I think dimes and quarters are pretty easy to handle and sufficiently small for everyday transactions.

For the average person, perhaps. But what about folks with poor hand/eye coordination or arthritis? And then there's the whole problem of how to carry them. Sure, you can toss a few in the wallet with your paper, but if you don't hold the wallet upright they can fall out - you never hear of people finding dollar bills in couches, but finding coins is a common theme.

People hate coins so much that there's entire industries built on it. March of Dimes and other charities can collect a lot of donations in retail settings because people would rather give a dime away then have to deal with change.

People hate coins because they have so little value and not because of their form. Who would prefer paper pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters over coins?

Exactly; coins' values is not worth their overhead (storage, safekeeping, protection from theft and loss, etc).  A penny isn't worth picking up because it's relative value in society. A dime just barely so.  But if your dime is worth $2.00, it becomes much more valuable and worth the trouble.
