I don't understand why this should be alarming or an issue?

The Healthcare.Gov website rollout was a disaster...everyone knows it. So how could uncovering a deleted email make the existing disastrous rollout worse?

In the US you need to understand civil servants cannot delete their professional communications. It is against the law. Asking someone to do it is against the law. Nothing to do with the website being a disaster or not.

I would believe that to be the case anywhere in the world, no matter the regime.

Judge orders IRS to come up with better explanation of missing Lerner e-mails

Insufficient IRS explanations cause Judge to order sworn answers from IRS about Lois Lerner’s hard drive and emails.

[...]
Judge Sullivan, in his earlier ruling, appointed Magistrate Judge John M. Facciola to manage and assist in discussions between Judicial Watch and the IRS about how to obtain any missing records from other sources. Magistrate Facciola is an expert in e-discovery, and authorized Judicial Watch to submit a request for limited discovery into the missing IRS records after September 10.

http://legalinsurrection.com/2014/08/judge-launches-special-inquiry-into-missing-irs-emails/

http://www.judicialwatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/JW-v-IRS-1.13.cv_.01559.pdf

[...]
“ORDERED.” “Must.” “Speak under oath.” These are not really requests, and the time frame isn’t an expression of curiosity, either. Giving the IRS a single week to meet these demands after months of wrangling over Judicial Watch’s challenge implies that (a) Sullivan’s pretty convinced the IRS has these answers, which then suggests that  (b) Sullivan’s getting angry over the IRS’ intransigence and opacity in dealing with the court. Either Judge Sullivan has run out of patience, or he wants the IRS to think he has.

Update:
The friend who was with Michael Brown when he was shot and killed by a police officer near St. Louis over the weekend is reportedly confirming that he and Brown had taken part in the theft of cigars from a convenience store that day.

That word comes from the attorney for Dorian Johnson, speaking to MSNBC. Police in Ferguson had earlier announced that Brown was suspected of taking cigars from the convenience store in what was described as a “strong-arm robbery.”

Was the cop wrong to fight for his life? Was anonymous right to target children of an officer because they could? Do cops need so much firepower? New black panther in town. Not for peace? How come?

My guess is all of the above actors have too much to lose for saying "we were wrong and we need to reevaluate what we do"... So nothing will change, unless for the worse.

8167  Other / Politics & Society / Obamacare Official Caught Telling Employee To Delete Emails on: August 15, 2014, 07:39:23 PM

An email obtained by Congress shows the top official for Healthcare.gov at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under the Department of Health and Human Services, Marilyn Tavenner, instructed the agency’s top spokesman to “Please delete this email.”

The instruction appears significant for several reasons: First, the email to be deleted included an exchange between key White House officials and CMS officials. Second, the email was dated October 5, 2013, five days into the disastrous launch of HealthCare.gov. Third, federal law requires federal officials to retain copies of –not delete– email exchanges. And fourth, the document to be deleted is covered under Congressional subpoena as well as longstanding Freedom of Information requests made by members of the media (including me).

In a letter today, House Energy and Commerce leaders asked Tavenner to explain why she asked her colleague to delete the email, and the letter questions whether there are other instances in which she instructed HHS staff to delete emails. The letter also asks for more details regarding Congressional subpoenaed documents, including Tavenner emails, that CMS recently said might be permanently lost; and it requests an explanation as to why redactions are made in some documents provided to Congress so far.

2010 FLASHBACK: EA pulls ‘Taliban' detail from game

Video gamers no longer will be able to fight and kill American troops as members of the "Taliban" in the upcoming first-person shooter "Medal of Honor," Military Times has learned. Instead, they'll fight and kill American troops as "the opposing force," a response to criticism from service members' families and others.

The bad guys in the multiplayer component of the game, in which gamers square off online for virtual shooting matches, will keep their Afghan looks, Pashtun dialogue and Kalashnikov weapons, but be called "OpFor." The game designers' change means the word "Taliban" will disappear from the game's internal menus and titles, but actual gameplay will otherwise stay the same.

Greg Goodrich, executive producer of "Medal of Honor" for video game giant Electronic Arts, told Military Times the company made the change in response to "feedback from friends and families of fallen soldiers who have expressed concern over the inclusion of the Taliban in the multiplayer portion of our game."

Initially, programmers didn't think anyone would be offended by having the word "Taliban" be a part of the game, he said, because they considered that a part of making the experience as realistic as possible.

"‘Medal of Honor' has always been about authenticity and respect for the soldiers, telling the soldiers' story from their point of view — that's one of the core tenants of the franchise, even though setting has changed," he said. "This ‘Medal of Honor' is no different in that regard … when you're talking about creating an authentic experience, creating authentic weapons, environment, dialogue, characters, all the things you do to achieve authenticity, part of that is calling the enemy what the enemy is. And we did that."

Even though game designers heard no complaints in initial tests, mainstream news organizations began reporting the "Taliban" detail this summer, which sparked a backlash from the families of fallen troops and even U.K. Defence Secretary Liam Fox, who said he was "disgusted and angry" by what he called "a tasteless product."

ISIS Chopping Off Arms And Legs Of Yazidi Men For Being “Devil Worshippers”…

Displaced Yazidi people fleeing into across a bridge into Syria from northern Iraq told FRANCE 24 reporters on the ground of the horrors committed by ISIS militants terrorising their region.

“They took the women and the young girls. The men were killed with butcher’s knives,” one young woman told FRANCE 24.

“They cut off their arms and their legs. They killed my family, I have no one now,” a young man added.

Yazidis, a Kurdish-speaking religious minority, are fleeing the violence of the militant group Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS or ISIL), which wants to force them to convert to Islam.

Yazidis have suffered religious persecution for generations because of their beliefs, which include some elements similar to Christianity, Judaism and other ancient religions. ISIS (which now calls itself the Islamic State) militants consider them “devil worshippers”, because of a similarity in the name of a spirit they worship and the Arabic word for “devil”.

8172  Other / Politics & Society / By 2025, ‘sexbots will be commonplace’ – which is just fine, as we’ll all be... on: August 15, 2014, 06:18:12 PM

...unemployed and bored thanks to robots stealing our jobs

According to a new report that looks at how continuing improvements to artificial intelligence and robotics will impact society, “robotic sex partners will become commonplace” by 2025. A large portion of the report also focuses on how AI and robotics will impact both blue- and white-collar workers, with about 50% of the polled experts stating that robots will displace more human jobs than they create by 2025.

The report, called “AI, Robotics, and the Future of Jobs” and published by Pew Research, is a 66-page monster [PDF]. The report basically consists of a bunch of experts waxing lyrical about what the world will look like in 2025 if robots and AI continue to advance at the same scary pace of the last few years. Almost every expert agreed that robots and AI will no longer be constrained to repetitive tasks on a production line, and will permeate “wide segments of daily life by 2025.” The experts are almost perfectly split on whether these everyday robots will be a boon or a menace to society, though — but more on that at the end of the story.

While the report is full of juicy sound bites from experts such as Vint Cerf, danah boyd, and David Clark, one quote by GigaOM Research’s Stowe Boyd caught my eye. By 2025, according to Boyd, “Robotic sex partners will be a commonplace, although the source of scorn and division, the way that critics today bemoan selfies as an indicator of all that’s wrong with the world.”

Back in 2012 — a long time ago in today’s tech climate — I wrote that we’d have realistic sexbots by around 2017. These robostitutes won’t necessarily have human-level intelligence (that’s still another 10+ years away I think), but they’ll look, move, and feel a lot like real humans. In short, they’ll probably be good enough to satisfy most sexual urges. What effect these sexbots will have on human-human relationships, and the sex and human trafficking trades, remains to be seen. At a bare minimum, a lot of sex workers will probably lose their jobs. If lovotics — the study of human-robot relationships — becomes advanced enough and people start falling in love with their sexbots (or rather partnerbots), then there could be some wide-ranging repercussions.

But, back to the bigger story: Will advanced AI and robots make the world a better place or not? Basically everyone agrees that robotics and AI are going to displace a lot of jobs over the next few years as the general-purpose robot comes of age. Even though these early general-purpose bots (such as Baxter in the video below) won’t be as fast or flexible as humans, they will be flexible enough that they can perform various menial tasks 24/7 — and cost just a few cents of electricity, rather than minimum wage. Likewise, self-driving vehicles will replace truck drivers, taxis, pizza delivery kids, and so on.

8176  Other / Politics & Society / SHOOT RACIST TEA PARTIERS IN ‘BATTLEFIELD HARDLINE’ on: August 14, 2014, 08:14:31 PM

In the upcoming first-person shooter Battlefield Hardline, players will shoot and kill racist anti-government Tea Party types, Gadsden flag and all.

Gamers got their first look at Battlefield Hardline’s singleplayer campaign, from developer Visceral Games and publisher Electronic Arts, at the Gamescom gaming convention in Cologne, Germany, on Wednesday, but the reveal included an unexpected partisan shot across the bow of conservative gamers. The Battlefield series, created by Swedish development studio DICE, has been largely apolitical since its first installment was released in 2002, but that appears to have changed with Visceral Games taking the lead on the latest release.

The Hardline demonstration opens with the player character, Nick Mendoza, and his partner Marcus Boone meeting with a criminal contact, Tony Alpert. The situation soon turns sour as it’s revealed the meeting is a setup to capture Mendoza and deliver him to a crime boss. Imprisoned in a decommissioned missile silo, Mendoza must escape his captors and sneak through the underground bunker to gain his freedom.

Along the way, Alpert can be heard ranting over the complex’s PA system, proclaiming himself a “one man island of armed sovereignty” and complaining about how “bilge… is pumped into young minds” by educators across “these once-united states” that has led to the “denigration, the humbling, the tearing down of everything that made this country great.”
Guards can also be heard complaining about how the gang used to associate with “scumbags” like Marcus, who is black, as well as “Mexicans” and “hippies.” While discussing the bounty placed on Mendoza’s head that led to the double-cross, one enemy remarks, “A quarter-million bucks for a Mexican? Shit, man, I didn’t know they got so expensive.”

All of this could be interpreted as simply painting the enemies as a white-power criminal gang, the kind of hard-right boogeymen that progressives like to use as analogues for all conservatives, but a sequence later in the demonstration makes it clear the developer has a much more specific group in mind.

When finding evidence in a trailer that your captors are connected to the construction or sale of a missile, the player character remarks, “Looks like your old friends have gone way past bank robbery.” Marcus replies, “One black president and Tony completely lost his shit,” as a Gadsden flag, a symbol of the Tea Party movement, is displayed prominently on the wall.

This is something I've noticed doctors have been trying to point out, something pushed these guys over the edge and the mixture of being hopped up on drugs and not being treated right would do that to anyone nevermind people who have mental problems to begin with. Good luck ever getting anyone in America to admit that though, they conveniently ignore the fact that Canada and Switzerland have just about as many guns as the Americans do but you very rarely if at all hear about people going on a rampage with them.

In fact, minus the compulsory national service, I think that the Swiss way is the way to go, if you want to go and buy a gun or have a rifle, you've got to do some kind of proper training first, these 'accidents' I've seen people list as a blame against firearms are caused by people doing things I would never do with a firearm and I don't even own one or know how to take it apart properly!

That is a pretty enlightened view point from someone I would traditionally disagree with. As a libertarian I am pro gun but I can also see the value of proper instruction in the use and storage of firearms. I would not advocate mandating it at the federal level, but states and municipalities can certainly invoke such requirements.

Video of Ferguson police gassing news crew and dismantling their equipment

http://boingboing.net/2014/08/14/video-of-ferguson-police-gassi.html

A news crew, clearly no threat or impediment to the cops, films from a verge in Ferguson, Missouri. A pop and a cloud of white smoke marks the arrival of a tear gas canister at their feet, and the newscrew is forced to flee. Moments later, police pull up in an armored van and hurriedly try to break down the film equipment--until they notice that another crew is still filming them from across the street.

Update: Kate O'Brian, president of Al Jazeera America, released a statement condemning the police.

Last night at 9:30 CDT in Ferguson, Missouri, an Al Jazeera America news crew was reporting behind police barricades. They were easily identifiable as a working television crew. As they were setting up their camera for a live report, tear gas canisters landed in their proximity and police fired rubber bullets in their direction. Police continued to shoot after crew members clearly and repeatedly shouted ‘Press’. Al Jazeera America is stunned by this egregious assault on freedom of the press that was clearly intended to have a chilling effect on our ability to cover this important story. Thankfully all three crew members are physically fine. We believe that this situation must be investigated along with those involving our colleagues at other media outlets.

Think Progress Exploits Death Of Robin Williams To Push Global Warming…

Robin Williams In 2002: ‘It Is Beyond Global Warming At This Point. It’s Cooking!’ – Think Progress

Robin Williams, who died Monday of an apparent suicide, was a brilliant comedian who had a well-known progressive bent in his humor.

He was not known for being an activist environmentalist the way some in Hollywood are — but he chose to make a lot of movies with explicit ecological themes, including “Happy Feet” 1 and 2 and “FernGully: The Last Rainforest.”

Williams took global warming seriously in the way only a great comic can. Back in 2002, he did this riff:

… And they say there is no global warming, but right now the North Pole is a pool. There’s things just floating away….

It is beyond global warming at this point. It is cooking.

It is 105 in the middle of the country and people come up going “Is it hot enough for you?”

“No I like sweat to be rolling down the crack of my ass like Niagara. I like my old man titties to lactate.”

And you see people in shorts and you’re going, “Please don’t wear those…. Oh please don’t put those on.”
