Regulation will come in the form of monitoring the exchanges cryptocurrencies are traded on. That's how cryptocurrencies will become regulated in a sense.

However, private transactions between individuals can't be regulated. It's only trading on the exchanges that will be regulated, and I don't understand how anyone could find fault with that.

Businesses will also have to hold information about transactions with customers. But yea, you are right, two transactions between individuals is like two cash transactions between individuals.
822  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | Fork for Masternode Payment on: July 14, 2014, 07:27:36 PM

tl;dr

I think you are both talking about the same thing, but are looking to point score against each other.

Crypto will be regulated. Cryptsy and other exchanges are now accepting USD for crypto, by way of one example.

Crytpo can be anonymous. Its all about how much information is left visible to track specific user identifiable information on the public viewable block chain.

Those two issues are not mutually exclusive.

darkota, for example, is on my ignore list for some time now... so all I get from him is this.

he's last contribution seems to be providing some positive input? I thought it was quite helpful.

Those panic sellers who didn't take time to read properly must feel really bad right now.

the coin never moved from mintpal, hacker got nothing, thats the whole point of this.

VeriCoin 8million - thief 0
AKA: The coins were never stolen...  MintPal screwed up and lost their private keys, or something similar.

It's by and far a more reasonable explanation then any of the bullshit stories from MintPal and the VRC devs.

VRC - we bail out exchanges when they fuck up, and the cost of blockchain integrity.
MintPal - declared too big to fail by VRC.

It's like fiat in a crypto, lol....

Mintpal have said they will reimburse anyone who can show they lost funds as part of the rollback.

It's far cheaper for them to come up with a fistful of bitcoin in compensation for proven loss than it would have been for 8mil VRC.
Tip:  If you had a ton of VRC, you would have been very smart to send them from one address you own to another before the blockchain rollback occured.
Then, contact mintpal, show them the transaction (which will have been reverted), and demand they reimburse you for your lost VRC from the private sale of <insert good here>.

Double your money! Woot.  Hopefully lots of people clued into this.

I doubt very much that any exchange would say they got hacked if all they did was lose private keys or a password.

Exchange security is Nr.1 / Nr.2 issue, other than liquidity.
826  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VRC] | VeriCoin | POS - NSDI | VeriBit | VeriSend | VeriSMS on: July 14, 2014, 11:08:36 AM
Like many others, I have a lot of Veri on Mint. The only reason its there, like everyone else, is to trade. No one uses Veri, so a rollback was feasible.

But it might have just fucked crypto in general.

What do you mean, you can rollback Bitcoin? That's what every government around the world will be told. That's what every bank is going to spell out as to why they won't allow crypto.

As soon as possible, I'm dumping my entire holding.

Stupid fucking decision.

Bye, where 1 crypto purist leaves, VeriCoin will take in many more mainstream people who wanted to be a part of the blockchain for years, but they could never get comfetorable with all the theft, not the whole centralized, decentralized BS that the purists think is nessisary for survival.

There is a reason bitcoin isn't growing as fast as it could. The purists hold it back trying to make it be something that it doesn't have to be to satisfy there agenda.

VeriCoin just created value for other people who once shied away from crypto due to people demanding that crypto are overcomplicated, and vulnerable.

VeriCoin proved there is a better way and the select few are mad? VeriCoin used the technology to avoid theft and secure its network, and this was bad?

Its irresposible to not use the resources at your disposal the technology allows, ONLY to cater to criminals, and purists. You see how they are close in the same? These people with computer skills want to keep it pure, so that they can control the power for the small %. As crypto grows more mainstream the computer geeks will lose more and more of the power they have. Scared much? VeriCoin proves that if your team is dilligent enough, and cares about its community that things can be done using the technology to strengthen a community and move forward a technology.
Anyone else notice the obscene irony in someone saying that he was dumping his Mint VRC holdings because the devs found the robber and handed back his coins that previously were in the hands of a thief who had robbed him?  So when you look at that lack of logic we can apply it to his other dumb ideas as well.

When you lose certainty that your transactions are complete and final, you have no financial system.

I admire your attempts at damage limitations. But face the facts. This could screw all crypto royally up the ass.
827  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][VRC] | VeriCoin | POS - NSDI | VeriBit | VeriSend | VeriSMS on: July 14, 2014, 11:00:33 AM
The thing is serious and I believe that BigDaddyWooWoo, who is active on another thread is right. I quote:

Quote
The bigger problem in all this is the "rollback", or the ability to do so.  Crypto has a real world trust issue and this makes it 100 times worse.  If I am a merchant there is no way in hell now that I would accept digital currency as now I have no idea if I get to keep my money. If the ledger can be rolled back on a whim then decentralized currencies are dead.

M/C and Visa have this issue to an extent but they cannot roll back an entire public ledger for as far back as they want to go.  Also, they are already entrenched where crypto is just getting a foothold.

Fungibility is extremely important.  Trust is extremely important.  Confidence is extremely important.  This is not a Vericoin problem.  This is a digital currency problem.  This affects the entire cryptosphere. This is now our problem.

I am converting all my holdings to BTC and hoping that it will weather the storm.  If it begins to take a hit back to fiat I go.  It sucks but the bed has been made now.  Not being chicken little here, just being objective and safe with my investments.

This sums it up pretty much perfectly, yet instead of addressing the issue people are just labeling anyone that might affect their short term investment as 'butthurt' or 'crying like a baby'.

We've all spent years telling everyone there are no charge backs in crypto.

That's true. We don't do charge backs on individual transactions, we do charge backs on the whole network.

The only safe havens now are Bitcoin, Litecoin, xmr and darkcoin.

I've been thinking about this one.....

Masternode = Proof of Stake mixing node only for the wealthy requires 1000DRK and imposes 20% tax on Miners
Miners = Doing the actual work to secure the network.

The mixing nodes require far less resources, and are basically nothing more than a wallet with some additional code activated; this is giving far too much reward value to the early adopters and wealthy.  This is bad for the coin.

Mining is the democratic process that will determine the future of this coin; I'm not mining on a pool that pays masternodes. Enforcement will cause a hard fork with the miners abandoning the enforcing branch.

Fix the masternode so everyone holding the coins participates, regardless of wallet balance and make it truly peer to peer proof of stake/proof of work hybrid. Make everyone a Masternode, not just the wealthy/early adopters.

This will create many men in the middle, most of them working for governments.

All the leading projects with some credibility should pool together to distribute articles on anonymity problems with litecoin, bitcoin, etc. Do it through one person who writes everything in generic terms not xmr is better than xyz.  When anonymity is on the radar as an issue, all related prices will go up, then you can start to distinguish differences.

This idea is nice, but the ongoing FUD campaigns inevitably breed distrust in the cross-community comparison. One needs to be understood and dealt with before the other. It would be interesting if it were revealed that no anonymous competition is behind this, but at this point it's not possible to tell. It's an effective campaign, and is recently losing ground IMO.

This thread is going out to all those who stand for Cryptos, whether it be Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Darkcoin, NXT, NEM or something else (sorry I didnt mention others!).

I for one am putting my foot down (with little no no authority here obviously) and standing up for all cryptos and also that get consistently bashed by trolls!

This post really made me make this thread (https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=20452.0), and I would love to see community members across all isles band together and put a stop to the coin bashing.

Recently I have seen a significant increase in coin bashing from a few trolls, and as a community we need to put a stop to this and defend all cryptos that are trying their damnness to create something that will have a good alternative or possibly even replace fiat. We are all brothers and sisters in the same community, whether you realize this or not.

I am a Litecoin advocate and proud of it, but that doesnt mean I hate other cryptos. Rather I recognize that we are a family, and we are stronger when standing together.

As a side note and forewarning, this is also a self moderated thread to remove any trolls that come in here and spread the hate. For all I know they are NSA lackies that were hired to spread FUD (and before the tin foil hat posts go up, realize that the NSA had people playing WoW looking for terrorists rofl).

Suspicions noted: more than a few people think this is an idea worth spreading.

please stop this trolling you are doing.

Why did it have to be 20%? That just feels excessive. People will run masternodes for less

I'm slowly accumulating a few more coins each day on dips, so I don't have enough for a master node yet, but not far off. If it was less than 20%, I don't think I would be that incentivised to get one.

That's the buying pressure right there. Buying pressure creates value for all coins, doesn't it? Without master nodes and incentivises to own them, I wouldn't be that interested in darkcoin.

Please take the discussion elsewhere if it does not concern the following coins. Thank you Smiley

From now on, only the following coins may be mentioned in the thread:

BTC
XMR
NXT
FLT
BBR
NEM
XCurrency
Maidsafe
Skycoin
Siacoin

Discussion of the other coins belongs to other threads.

Sure Alex.

A privacy focussed coin will rightfully take the place behind Bitcoin. The initial 50,000 Satoshi valuation of XMR when smooth opened XMR OTC thread was also due to DRK rising and people realizing the role of anon/priv currency. Folks had already spotted that in March, but some didn't jump on the DRK wagon due to the negative propaganda around it (not going to discuss those as they have been already ad nauseum).

@canonsburg

Also agree with your post. I was merely trying to lay down the rationale behind current valuation/trend.

Are they not related to the discussion at all?

Anon was not discussed until Darkwallet and darkcoin hit the headlines.

How is the dev team going to respond if some of these pools decide to never update?  I think some of them are choosing to not pay masternodes on purpose
Orphan all their blocks. Has been the plan all month...

^^ What he said.  Hunting down non-paying pools is a stop-gap measure while we await the implementation of code which will force pools to comply or render the blocks they find useless.  This is generally what people in this thread are referring to when they talk about "enforcement" (though enforcement can refer to any feature in a broader context).

So enforcement doesn't ban pools, the network just won't accept their blocks if they haven't paid a master node when a block is submitted?
