8221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The sad truth about Bitcoin on: December 16, 2014, 06:38:13 AM
I've come to realize that Bitcoin is either for the rich or for poor people picking up the smallest of crumbs.  There seems to be very few people in the middle.  If this doesn't change... Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general is doomed.

You came here thinking that it would be easy to get rich [1] and now that you understand you would have to work for it you blame bitcoin. If you have problems its noone elses fault, get your act together and pan them out [2].

I reported this user https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=216253

My accuracy went down so I have stopped doing it as it showed the site allows this kind of posting.

Meh, why is your accuracy important for you if you dont report?

A++ paid sig, one-liners, shows interest in bought accounts, member ranks and unrestricted number of posts would report again.

On the other hand the person is probably limited by the ability to express themself in english. I doubt its on purpose, its more likely that this is just the way the person posts, with or without paid signature. This is the post [1] they joined a campaign.

This is what I want to do.  I want find a way to get 10 Bitcoins in 2 months.  I don't have any money to invest.  How would you get 10 Bitcoins in 2 months?  Is it possible to do some work and reinvest the Bitcoins into cloud mining?

Work for 8 hours every day, get paid 8$. Alternativly work less for more money and/or get paid directly in bitcoin.

Hallo zusammen,

8226  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How do you protect your wallet and backup file? on: December 14, 2014, 10:42:47 PM
A trezor can not be infected with virus right? If my personal everyday computer have virus, and I plug in the Trezor, it doesn't infect the Trezor right? But with a external harddrive, it could?

Well, technically a Trezor could be infected like any other computer, it has a CPU [1] so it can be programmed to do different things. BUT(!) its way easier to find a loophole in a complex machine than it is in a slim machine. Its easier to make a mistakes if you write several million lines of code (modern OS) than it is if you write a few tousand lines of code. I am not sure how many lines of code Trezor actually needs to work, but its a different dimension than an operationsystem. The other things is that its more likely for someone to write malware for a broadly used OS than it is for special purpose hardware. If you have to infect a few million machines to find a single trezor, dont bother, see what the few million machines have to offer. Thats why there are so many viruses for Windows and so little for the other systems.
So as everything technical its not 100% safe, but better than the HD. The harddrive can be read as soon as the system its plugged into is under control. Trazor has to be broken seperately. Like a safe behind a metal door vs. a desk behind a metal door (HDD).

I read through the link you attached, but didn't understand the most of the Seeds and Change Addresses part. However, I think I shouldn't even bother to mess with that one, then hopefully, all my coins are safe.

Yep, just keep it in the default setting and you are fine.

And yeah, don't bother with private keys either, if you use a wallet like electrum with a seed. Just keep a copy or two of the seed, and it should be good!

Thats why I like Electrum so much. Armory would require constant new backups. I recently installed mSIGNA its slim but needs a local (or remote) bitcoin core to work with, supports multi sig and all the nice stuff. The userinterface is a bit complex though. *sigh* by the time I found my perfect wallet there will be 10 more to test.

So Tails is a OS. And anything done on Tails, are not stored on my computer. But on Tails, I should only install the electrum wallet, and nothing else, right?

Yes, its usually on a DVD (safer because it cant be modified) or USB (more convienient as it allows to store extra data) and is booted into your memory. Thus it does not access your HD because its not actually installed. As long as you trust the hardware you could use it on any machine, even an infected one. The only problem I currently see is that you have to get electrum once you booted tails, but that might change with the next version [2] of tails.

Both work via the console but not using the json-rpc interface.

Im sorry if this is a stupid thing to suggest (I have never written PHP), but might this be a problem of (non-)escaped chars?

And this [1] is probably redundant info, but it took me a while to find when I wrote a ruby script, so maybe you didnt know about it.

8228  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info wallet not showing my Tranactions all of it on: December 14, 2014, 07:54:51 PM

Depends on the wallet software/service you use.

I don't use any software just go online i don't like these kind of software but i am trying to switch to xapo wallet and see how it does.

In that case: contact their support. What else could you do? You are depending that someone else is doing a good job. If they make mistakes its your problem as well as theirs. Id rather make my own mistakes and have only myself to blame [2].

At least make sure you can access your private keys when their webserver is down. It might also be possible that you are effected by the problem [1] they had lately. In this case your coins might be gone allready.

Try 0.9.2.1 I had problems with 0.9.3 for 64 bit windows versions (different) as well. Reverting to a slightly older version fixed it.

How long should a freshly installed electrum with new addresses generated take to sync? It's not stopping, it goes to 'Synchronizing' then appears the Green Light and then it goes back to RE-Sync??

Seconds, try a different server.

Also, where does it stores the data it downloads while Synchronizing??

I dont know for sure, but I suspect in memory.

I actually feel I have to post better quality most of the time I advertise for someone.

Then you havent done the cost/benefit analysis.

No, because I do not understand my posting here as work. Id post as much anyway. I could just work 3 hours more each day instead and earn way more money, at minimum wage. Thus anyone thats actually doing a cost/benefit analysis and comes to the conclusion: "Ill game the signature campaign for the money"... well how do I put that nicely? I guess I cant: its just plain stupid.

Quote
Yes, get booted out of the campaign and possible banned for spam and sometimes even made look silly. If someone is posting bullshit, reply and show those who do now know any better that its bullshit.

Chances of that happening are what, 1%? Again do the cost/benefit analysis then imagine having dozens of accounts.

... I see you do the "pull percentages out of my behind" now. Badbear confirmed a ban right here. What makes you think its the only case out of 100?
In your opinion/experience the chances are slim. In my experience I just report them. I wont start to pull numbers from anywhere as I dont keep track of how many posts I report for spam (~1800 total currently, but they are not all related to spam) and how many result in bans. I feel the staff does a very good job with this, those running the campaigns do less, but they start to act. Just see the response time in this thread. OP is from 13.12.2014 - 1233, badbears response from 1414 the same day.

Quote
First of all do you have anything that can back your claim for the reason they left?
JoelKatz was last active yesterday [2] and DeathAndTaxes [3] has a signature in the fashion a campaign would. I suspect you just pull reputable people out of your behind to back your argument.

DnT's signature is his own company duh.

So? He is advertising, he will earn money off of it and probably way more than anyone running for a signature campaign. You claim he left because of spam caused by signature campaigns. I ask: can you confirm that in any way.

JoelKatz has posted less than once a week  prior to selling some hardware.

Again: what makes you think the reason behind the absense is spam cause by signature campaigns. People leave for all kinds of reasons, I wonder why you can speak for them.

No, its a "nice" way to render this forum useless. I would much rather have they begged.

I think this discussion leads nowhere. Lets just agree to disagree. If you want to do something against spam, report it via the report link or create posts like these.

And to think that he even did it himself.

https://bitcointalk.org/docs/ulbricht.pdf

I won't post my response because it contains deleted posts which should remain private if at all possible. Probably my response will end up as part of public record, but I'm not going to speed up the process or make it easier for people to find. I already PMed the users affected by this.

Maybe this is the first time Theymos experienced a formal subpoena, but I have trouble believing that this is the first time he experienced a law enforcement inquiry.

This is the first government request/inquiry I've received related to Ulbricht's case. I have received a few other inquiries for other cases.

8238  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Lost access to 0.71535432 BTC on: December 14, 2014, 08:40:07 AM
Really need more details if you want help.
What wallet did you use?
What coins did you loose access over, the 7btc or the 0.715 btc transfer?
What did you engage in during you p2pool mining days that would cause this?

The coins are back now.... so everything is normal! But it defiantly scared the piss out of me for a little bit! LOL

I use MultiBit....  I use the default wallet in it.  I lost access to the value listed in the subject for what appears to be one transaction or so (my spendable balance went down by the amount in the subject).

I did run my own P2Pool,  and I had about 2.2 TH/s from February until fairly recently (mining just isn't as profitable as it used to be). It was a merged P2Pool, but nothing special.

I am going to assume it was all the smaller deposits of coins.....

Thanks for your offer of help anyways!

If you dont mind, Id like to explain the reason for this even though you allready regained access. This will happen again and I think its important that you understand it.

Its basically this:

I guess it was just the change and you needed some confirmations for your client to recognize that it is yours again.

Bitcoin works very similar to cash in a sense that you have bills that are not divisible. In your case you had a 0.715 354 32 BTC bill, among others. Every input you receive is a single bill and if you want to spend parts of it you will get change [1]. Some wallets allow you to spend "unconfirmed change", Multibit does not by default. Thus your 0.715... BTC are esentially gone until the transaction gets its first confirmation. If you take the TX-Id and watch it with a blockchain explorer you will see that there are two outputs. One for the person receiving your coins and one for your change. Until the change is confirmed multibit treats it as it would any other unconfirmed transactions and acts like it has no control over it.

[1] this is done durring the TX, its not like the other person is actually returning anything to you. Another picture is to imagine lumps of gold. Your 0.715... BTC lump of gold has to be melted down in order to be spend partially.

8240  Other / Meta / Re: [REPORT] ~ Please *stop* this user on: December 13, 2014, 08:50:27 PM
Rules only help so much as long as the incentives are all wrong. Rules, even if enforceable and enforced will just be bent, skirted or broken.
Fact is the campaign organizer wants to maximize ad impressions, therefore spam is not his problem, its his friend. And campaign members only care about maximizing their profit with minimal effort.

I actually feel I have to post better quality most of the time I advertise for someone. I think longer before I post and I sometimes dont even post a lenthy one I allready wrote. I agree that there are others out there and I dont want to say that everyone should feel the same. I actually think I should not care about the signature and post like I would without it.
If someone running a campaign actually thinks spam is their friend, they have understood nothing about advertising. Its easy to get an army of idiots posting bullshit noone cares about. Its hard work to root these idiots out and only keep worthy posters. The overal quality of posts for a certain campaign says a lot of their quality of service. If they do not care enough about their image, why should they care about their customers? Advertisement is long beyond the same old "be in their heads".
Stunna got that a while back when he first restructured and later (effectivly)[1] canceled the PrimeDice campaign. I think it could have been done earlier, but thats easy to say in hindsight. You shouldnt wait for the "DannyHamilton is ignoring PD signature wearers by default" warning signs.

Posting silly gifs,  5 word posts and completely meaningless stupid posts by people who do not care or know anything  about the topics being discussed, is the predictable result.

Yes, get booted out of the campaign and possible banned for spam and sometimes even made look silly. If someone is posting bullshit, reply and show those who do now know any better that its bullshit.

People with vested interests in this spam may say what they want, Im pretty sure I know why so many old and interesting posters like DeathAndTaxes and JoelKatz cant be bothered with this forum anymore.

First of all do you have anything that can back your claim for the reason they left?
JoelKatz was last active yesterday [2] and DeathAndTaxes [3] has a signature in the fashion a campaign would. I suspect you just pull reputable people out of your behind to back your argument.

Dont judge a post by its signature. Its a nice way for people without much money to get some coins, to learn about bitcoin without investing to much without begging for them. There should - probably - be more pressure on those running the campaign. I dont know how with the given set of rules, besides continue to report those that spam. Mabye if 5 of your campaigners get banned you also get banned?

Yes there will be those that try to bent the rules but frankly: there will allways, no matter which rules. Its your job as the person in charge to detect that. Talk to borderline cases, tell them you dont like what you see and if they cant improve, its their last turn. Keep turns short and max posts per turn low. The campaigns adapt. A year ago anyone with the needed rank could have earned 2.4 BTC from Stunna in a month. No (or unreachable high) limit campaigns are dead. Why is that if the incentive is all wrong? Why is that if those running the campaigns could care less if their campaigners get banned? Its because spam is not your friend, never.

[1] AFAIK hilariousandco and mprep are still running for Stunna.
