If MtGox could make it so that you could add your PGP public key and then configure your account such that bitcoin withdrawals require PGP signature of a pre-generated message that contained the destination bitcoin address, MtGox would have undisputable conclusive proof in the event of a disagreement as to whether a withdrawal was authorized.

That's a good idea.

However: what's the difference of having ones password stolen and having ones pgp key stolen and passphrase key-logged?

In other words: mtgox even in this case has proof the withdrawal was authorized (albeit not as strong, it could be faked by gox) by means of a successful login with password.

So while this puts mtGox in a more comfortable situation, this is only better for the user if he protects his pgp key better than his password.

Thanks for the info guys, this really ruined my day! I am already screwed with bills and stuff and then I log in to find this... ugh

Could this have anything to do with my Yubikey being broken and reported lost? I never got a chance to actually use it on Mt Gox so I don't really know what happened there!?

So you never linked your yubi-key to your mgGox account. Well, don't talk about your account "with yubi-key withdrawal protection activated" being hacked, then, dude.

Sorry 'bout your loss, but don't lie to us.

Researchers Warn: Mega's New Encrypted Cloud Doesn't Keep Its Megasecurity Promises

just not do-able with javascript alone still these days i guess

This is essentially the same problem blockchain or any other javascript-based wallet suffers from.

I'm guessing third-party plugins will pop up that verify the mega javascript code.

Encryption is the new gun.

Not really all that new though.  The magic will (hopefully) be making it easy, solid, and most importantly, default.  There was something of a push to try to get people to encrypt their mail and such when the big PGP brew-ha was going in the 90's.  It was to cumbersome and only a few people do it.  Alas, although encryption did take hold a long time later (and fairly recently) it did so in a way that was not protecting uses fully...and the US government is spending many billions of my tax dollars to exploit the situation.

I am really excited by the mega.co.nz thing insofar as it seems to be a model for how encryption should work...in a general sense.  If they can prove that it is workable it may be difficult for the competition to not follow suite.  I think that more and more people are getting a little bit fed up and suspicious about just how much they are being spied on these days and are starting to ask questions about why, exactly, it is so goddamned important to the powers that be that they are so anxious to be able to do this.

+1, good analysis. I agree.

Maybe gmail could incorporate encryption.

Another big area is chat/videocall (skype). We need to move off this piece of shit, but the lock-in is tight. I can't help but think that M$ buying skype has had some gov. agency backing/pressure behind it.

EDIT: this goes in the right direction https://silentcircle.com/, but how to achieve widespread use?

EDIT2:

  • Freedom of economic interaction
  • Freedom of speech

I don't know which is more important.

Is there a right to encrypt? If not: we need that.

Umm why would I post my login credentials and ticket number here?!

He said to open a ticket with that info and then post the ticket number here, not the info itself. Only gox staff (supposedly) can look at the tickets.

As for "distributing" possible compensation: I think you can only do it evenly by bet amount since you don't know who belongs to which group and assessing the harm you did individually is highly error-prone and will likely wear you out.

Thank you for the kind words and concern, I have already contacted each better and I'm in the process of settling. It will take a little bit of time but I am dedicated to this first and foremost until the matter is resolved. Since many of the people betting were trolls trying to scam me I cannot make a group settlement because not all of the group will participate (sock puppet accounts do not respond). I can only discuss a solution with people who actually respond.

I wish you best of luck to get this through quickly so you can move on. I also hope everyone ends up with a little less grief and a lighter heart.

Welcome back, Matthew.

You fucked up big time and you seem to regret it. That's a good thing.

You even want to make good on your "obligations". However, I'm not sure what these are:

I never took your bet seriously myself (otherwise I would've bet at some point when I was sure pirate would run and your bet miraculously was still open). First I was of the impression you really thought pirate would pay, but I was also pretty sure you wouldn't have 10 kBTC, let alone 80 kBTC.

I'm guessing most of the people who "took" your bet had similar thoughts (that the bet was a joke and/or you had gone berserker insane and wouldn't pay either way). Whoever seriously counted on you paying up and thought they had thereby effectively "hedged" their pirate loss was dilusional.

We can put the people that took your bet into 2 categories:

  • d) delusional: those who took you seriously and thought they could get out of their pirate fuckup this way
  • c) clowns or profiteer: those who took your bet for fun and never planned to pay in case they lost

group c) you really owe nothing and I'm not sure about group d): they had made the initial mistake of investing in pirate and had only themselves to blame for that. This was becoming clearer to them every day. Then you seemingly came to the rescue (like a fata morgana of water in the desert) and they thought themselves saved. Now they blame the fata morgana for disappearing? I'm not sure this works. (I know this analogy is wrong.. a hyperbole)

As for the damage you inflicted: your bet might've enabled pirate to keep things going a little longer (I don't know) and some more money was sent his way than would've been otherwise. It's hard to do this, but if I had to put a number, I would say your "obligations" are around 1% of the total bet amount.

As for "distributing" possible compensation: I think you can only do it evenly by bet amount since you don't know who belongs to which group and assessing the harm you did individually is highly error-prone and will likely wear you out.

I'm just thinking out loud here and might change my mind upon discussion, but that's the way I see things currently.

Any ideas how high Matthews obligations really are?
8268  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Mt Gox Hacked - lost it all today... now what!? on: January 21, 2013, 09:13:57 PM
you need gox' help to see what's happened. The fact that you had yubikey activated for withdrawals makes it very unlikely you got hacked.

Did you do any other withdrawals during that time?
8269  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will we se 17 within 6 hours of this thread being posted? on: January 21, 2013, 08:57:56 PM
No,It is true the price does spike on the Gox via "Last price" to over 17.I have seen it myself a few seconds ago.

It's some coding error in the script that updates the prices in the browser. Gox has never fixed it, but they've been notified before about it.

I think the "last price" is also updated from the EUR and other markets on gox. EUR is currently pretty high (higher than USD).

EDIT: mtgoxEUR high is €12.73 ($16.95), so what I said doesn't make sense.

EDIT2: 10.85 BTC (mtgoxGBP high) = 17.17 USD
8270  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will we se 17 within 6 hours of this thread being posted? on: January 21, 2013, 08:40:59 PM
I saw on MtGox one sale for $17.12 a few seconds ago, and now it's back down to $16.70

their have been many people who claim to see the price spike for a second, during this rally
yet bitcoin charts doesn't show that.

what going on here...

collaborative illusion?

DAMN! I hate when MtGox web interface changes the price automatically (without my permission) miliseconds before I click "buy / sell" !!!
Anyone knows a better platform to trade on MtGox?

Well my view is this: If I'm not doing anything illegal, then why is my data being captured? Some of you may have nothing to hide. Like John Banks for example. But most people do have something to hide. They hide many things, even from their closest friends and family.

Privacy is about much broader values than just hiding things. It's about the human need for refuge from the eye of the community and the importance of maintaining the balance of power between individuals and the state.

Mega believes in your right to privacy. Mega has developed technology that keeps your data private and safe. Mega will support an ecosystem of 3rd party privacy applications born from our new technology. Ultimately more and more of the internet will be encrypted thanks to mega *grin*. And by using mega you say 'no' to those who want to know everything about you. By using Mega you say 'no' to governments that want to spy on you. And by using Mega you say yes to internet freedom and your right to privacy.

While I don't like all the hubris, I must say the guy has the right view on things and is moving some shit.

We may have a short-term reversal in BTC/USD coming soon... watch this last candlestick spiking up to $16.5/BTC... if it turns into a short bar with a long wick that suggests a powerful reversal coming, and MACD appears to be near its peak... I expect BTC to trend down for several days, as the whales shake out the crowd... once everyone is sufficiently scared and we're back near support (est. $13-ish level) they'll buy all the coins back at a bargain before the next leg up...

I'm not sure about this. We're in sort of a vacuum uncharted territory. I might well go by 20 in a breeze. I'm not convinced of your view.

i'm just watching with baited breath for the next stable point... the rocket is a great ride, sure. but we all know it'll peak and drop down some.

also, what's driving this? aside from the Avalon asic shipping announcement, i'm not aware of any news that would drive such a spike.

I think we are generally overestimating the short-term effect of positive news (like wordpress, goldmoney, bitpay,...) and underestimating the long-term effects.

Sure, on good news traders with fiat at the exchanges will buy. But keep in mind these people are prone to take a profit even on a $0.15 rise, so the effect will be short-term and short-term only. No new fiat comes in through this mechanism so there wont be a lasting effect.

The long term effect of good news bringing in fresh blood on the other hand is too easily forgotten about by the time the news is old and we then ask ourselves: "why the $0.30 rise on no news?"

See for example the reasons I gave for justifying my intution of a rocket about to be ignited in this thread on Nov 5th last year: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122454. We might still see the effects of this 2 month later. Think about it: it takes time to go from hearing about bitcoin to actually making a sizeable purchase: First the guy has to get his initial infos about bitcoin. He will then ponder the idea for a while and let the overwhelming info sink in (a week or two), then revisit bitcoin and get excited, take another week to make the decision to get in. Then it takes a week for him to actually get money to an exchange (yes, a majority of newbs will think mtgox is the way to buy bitcoins). Then he will wait for a dip or rally to actually get int (another week or so). Add this up and you have 1-2 months.

;tldr: the current rally is fueled in considerable part by newbs generated by 2 months old good news.

sorry to repost, but it shows my view on this question.
