8321  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Plagiarism and Paraphrasing, different sins of equal magnitude? on: June 14, 2021, 10:59:53 AM
The problem here, is that in most cases, only the only person him/herself knows if what he/she said is actually his original idea, or something he/she copied. It really isn't rare for 2(or more) people come up with the same(or at least similar) ideas.
That's right, and that's why admins can't (or better said) shouldn't consider paraphrasing as a bannable offence. Unless, of course, we are talking about a shitposter who does nothing else but post dubious content whose origins and authors can't be proven, and has other posts that are plagiarized.
8322  Local / Altcoins (Hrvatski) / Re: Polkadot (DOT) Staking on: June 14, 2021, 10:53:40 AM
8323  Other / Archival / Re: THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN COINS AND TOKENS on: June 14, 2021, 08:44:04 AM
• A coin is a digital currency similar to the physical currency.
How is an intangible digital currency or a cryptocurrency similar to a tangible physical currency like a dollar bill?

However there are cases that a token can become coin like eos and tron network that resides on erc20.
Tron the coin doesn't use the Ethereum blockchain. It has its own network. You are probably thinking of USDT, a token (even though it's called a stablecoin) that can be transferred over the Tron blockchain. While writing this post I just remembered that Tron used to be an ERC-20 token, but sometimes in 2018/2019 it migrated to its own network, so maybe you were talking about that. Such migrations happen often once the projects develop their mainnets.

i believe hardware wallets are a safe way of storing cryptocurrencies from the articles i have read about it, the question i have is what happens if this hardware wallet is stolen or is destroyed, does that mean that the cryptocurrencies on it are lost forever? or is there a way to recover them in the case that the hardware wallet is lost, damaged or stolen?
Although this thread is about the dangers of centralized exchanges, the OP also mentions hardware wallet, so your question remains partially on-topic.

The coins are never on your hardware wallet. Only the private keys which allow you to spend your coins are stored on the wallet. When you set up your wallet, you will be presented with a 12/24-words seed. Everything is derived from that master seed. Make several copies of your seed on paper and store them somewhere safely.

If your hardware wallet breaks and stops working, you can simply get another one of the same type or a different one as long as it's compatible with BIP39 seeds. So, if you use Ledger, get another Ledger or Trezor wallet (those are the most popular ones), import your seed, and you will have access to your coins again. You can also import your seed in a software wallet, but doing that, you lose the security that hardware wallets provide.
8325  Economy / Gambling / Re: BK8 - Biggest and Most Trusted Brand. Asia's #1 Crypto online casino BTC & USDT on: June 14, 2021, 08:13:00 AM
I have a question about your brand ambassadors such as John Terry. From what I know, UEFA doesn't allow players and club officials to be tied to betting companies and having "a financial interest" in such companies. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was recently fined for a similar misconduct.

Quote
UEFA fined AC Milan's Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic €50,000 ($61,000) on Wednesday for breaking the rules by having a financial interest in a betting company.
Quote
"The Chairman of the UEFA Appeals Body also issued Mr. Ibrahimovic with a directive aimed at ceasing the player's association with the relevant betting company," UEFA said in a statement.

The article goes on to state that:
Quote
FIFA's Code of Ethics state a player cannot have interests in entities or companies that "promote, broker, arrange or conduct betting, gambling, lotteries or similar events or transactions connected with football matches and competitions".

Your site states that John Terry was a brand ambassador in 2018/2019. In that season, he was Aston Villa's assistant manager. Are there any official documents/sources that can prove that he is a brand ambassador of BK8?
8326  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Say the Binance CEO? on: June 14, 2021, 07:53:27 AM
Avoid shitcoins like Bitcoin diamond, Bitcoin Gold, Ethereum classic etc.
Many people will tell you that Ethereum is the real shitcoin and Ethereum Classic follows the principles of the real Ethereum coin before the DAO debacle. The difference is that the classic Ethereum has less network security and thus suffered 51% attacks.

We should also not forget that the same Binance was hacked a while ago and the same person demanded that bitcoin miners 51% attack bitcoin and reverse the block that contained the result of their incompetency. He even contacted and begged a lot of miners to perform such an attack on bitcoin!
I'm just mentioning this here to let you know who you are really quoting.
He really said that? I'd like to read about that pathetic attempt of his, do you have a link to the story?
8327  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Plagiarism and Paraphrasing, different sins of equal magnitude? on: June 14, 2021, 07:39:16 AM
If someone says that Bitcoin uses a public and decentralized ledger, is that plagiarism? is it paraphrasing or can it be considered public knowledge? Do I need to put a source link anytime I use words like decentralized, ledger, distributed, open-source, etc? What about backward compatibility, do you think anyone puts any links when talking about it?

Paraphrasing as an act of plagiarism can sometimes be difficult to prove. How are you going to prove that someone's post about importing a private key into a wallet is plagiarized/paraphrased just because the steps he wrote down are the same as what other people wrote previously?

Whenever someone explains how a bitcoin transaction goes from point A to point B, it's paraphrased from somewhere even though you memorized and you know the process by heart. There was once an original post about it, people read, improved, and memorized the process.
8328  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Riddles and Brain-Teasers for Bitcointalk Members (Newbies – Members) on: June 14, 2021, 07:17:23 AM
Riddle #7

Ivan is from Croatia. His younger brother Igor studies abroad in Canada. Ivan wants to send Igor a $100 gift in bitcoin, but he is worried. Canada is far away, and the transaction will inevitably include international transaction fees, he thinks. Ivan hesitates whether or not bitcoin is the best payment method to use and thinks the more coins you spend, the bigger the fees will be.

Can you help Ivan to figure out how bitcoin transactions work and how the fees are determined?
8329  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how did government retrieve ransomware bitcoin? on: June 14, 2021, 06:49:30 AM
The explanation was so bad that it was almost like the implication was as if the DOJ just took out a tool called a "private key" and they can automatically unlock any wallet they want.
Oh, you didn't know that there is an app available for Windows 10 that allows you to extract a private key from any address out there and it's completely free and absolutely not malware-infected at all... Grin

Joking aside, I can't be angry with a journalist for not knowing the workings of Bitcoin and the blockchain. What pisses me off is when I see that someone reports maliciously about crypto, but obviously knows nothing about how it works. I am OK with the lack of know-how as long as the general idea of the piece is not about how Bitcoin should be avoided at all costs, that it brings only trouble in the world, is only used by drug dealers, and similar nonsense.
8330  Economy / Gambling / Re: List Of Crypto Casinos with The Best Faucets on: June 14, 2021, 06:39:04 AM
UserU is right. I haven't ranked the casino from best to worse, I just listed them as I came across those with faucets. Having an ANN thread on Bitcointalk was an important factor as that's where I can find out more about the site's reputation. I didn't consider those with negative feedback, so that it doesn't look that I am promoting them somehow. The faucet has to be free for all. If the casino requires KYC or deposits before the player can claim some coins, it losses its point of a free faucet in my opinion.
8331  Local / Off-topic (Hrvatski) / Re: Sport i Kladionica on: June 14, 2021, 06:31:33 AM

8332  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how did government retrieve ransomware bitcoin? on: June 13, 2021, 11:18:21 AM
You can't put too much faith in anything bitcoin related reported in the media, or even in court documents. The majority of people are completely unaware as to how bitcoin works. When they say that the FBI "had the private key", they could mean anything from they actually had the private key, to they could work out who had it and pressurized them to transferring the bitcoins, to anything in between. If it was owned by an exchange or web wallet, perhaps they agreed to hand it over on the basis of anonymity, since any service willingly handing over users' bitcoin to third parties would obviously take a serious hit to their reputation.
You are right about that. I think your theory about the FBI making a deal with the cryptocurrency exchange to hand over the coins makes the most sense. The entire report about them "having the private keys" could be just a fabrication created to not put that centralized exchange in a bad spot business-wise.

This was also my first thought. It was just revealed that the FBI have, over several years, created a fake company, developed, manufactured, and sold over 12,000 fake phones loaded with fake encryption software, and used all that to collect data, spy on people, and intercept communications.
Although Entrochat wasn't created by the FBI, as soon as you mentioned encryption software, it made me think of that. I was planning to write a thread about it, but I am not quite sure where to post it as it's not really related to any bitcoin type of discussions. Maybe Serious Discussion could be appropriate. Everything can be broken with enough interest and coordination.
8333  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: My transaction has been unconfirmed for over 12 hours because of low fees on: June 13, 2021, 08:03:40 AM
The mempool looks pretty good right now and if your transaction is valid and got broadcasted correctly, I suggest you take another look at it as the problem has been probably solved already. At the moment of writing this post, there are less than 1.000 unconfirmed transactions in the mempool.
8334  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: retrievinmg my btc account on: June 13, 2021, 07:54:27 AM
@Raiviic
Depending on how much was in that wallet, you might have learned the hard way how important it is to be in control of your own data and ultimately your own money.  Undecided Bitcoin teaches us about financial independence and not to rely on third-party services to store sensitive information because they can stop their operations any time, be hacked, or have a leak. A physical backup with pen and paper is and always remains a better option than a digital backup.

I hope you will somehow manage to regain access to your wallet!
8335  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Jun 2021] Mempool empty! Use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs! on: June 13, 2021, 07:20:37 AM
There are currently less than 1.100 unconfirmed transactions in the mempool according to https://mempool.space/. That means that even if mempool.space suggests a 4 sat/vByte as minimum fee, a 1 sat/vByte transaction has a good chance to receive next block confirmation considering that some blocks have 2-3k of transactions. Of course that's not a rule, and it all depends on how long we have to wait for the next block. Currently, we are 11 mins without a new block.
8336  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: British Man Duped out of $282,000 in Brutal Crypto Scam on: June 13, 2021, 07:15:51 AM
Only if every person who enter in this space knows the basics and understand the essence of crypto/security, surely victims like this will be lessen.
You know that meme, ain't nobody got time for that? That's the sad reality. Things like common sense and personal safety are easily forgotten when all you can think about is how much money you stand to make.

It's also going to take years before people understand both the benefits and shortages of irreversible transactions. We still use a financial system where you only need to pick up your phone and make a call and ask someone else to correct a mistake you did. Crypto works in a different way, and not everyone is ready for it.
8337  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how did government retrieve ransomware bitcoin? on: June 13, 2021, 07:04:04 AM
I can't wrap my head around the idea that the FBI "had the private key" of that address. If it was a centralized exchange, I'd understand if they put pressure on that exchange to block that particular account. But the exchange would certainly not give out its private keys. If the hackers used a custodial wallet, I'd like to know which one, and how did the FBI get the private key of the address from it? From the report, it doesn't look like the FBI managed to infiltrate the computers used by the thieves and gained access to the keys that way. They already had the keys.

Maybe it's important to consider that the FBI has released fake custodial crypto wallets that are being used as we speak. Similar to the fake apps they created that led to the arrest of an international drug cartel not that long ago. Another reason not to use unknown, custodial and closed source apps.
8338  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: British Man Duped out of $282,000 in Brutal Crypto Scam on: June 13, 2021, 06:46:56 AM
Perhaps it is time to repeat the obvious: People who want to enter the crypto space need to know that they face a myriad of dangers and inconveniences. Because of your love to cryptocurrency, do not respond to unexpected messages from unknown senders and unreasonable promises of astronomical profits or rewards.
There are so many cryptocurrency exchanges and P2P methods of purchasing bitcoin that it baffles me that people still believe in online/email offers where the crypto equivalent of Nigerian princes give you the chance to get rich. Not only that, but he gave the scammers access to his computer where they stole his personal information and showed up at his home demanding more money.
8339  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is wrong with you people? on: June 13, 2021, 06:34:43 AM
@BitScorpio
You have to realize that not many people look at the state of the mempool before broadcasting their transactions. They either rely on their wallets to suggest what fees to use, and those are too high most of the time. Or, they use even worse fee estimators that can be even worse at times because they suggest 10, 20 or 100 times higher fees than what is needed.

Some bitcoin users get worried that their coins will magically disappear if their transaction isn't confirmed within a few minutes. To avoid all that, they would rather overpay. People are still used to traditional banking where everything happens in just a few seconds. At least, that's how it seems. They don't care what happens in the background.

<Snip>
I created an account with BC.Game when I wrote my Withdrawal Fees and Withdrawal Amounts on Crypto Casinos thread. You are right, they do have such a lucky spin wheel. I tried it out and got some in-house JB tokens as a reward. From what I can see, players can spin the wheel once every 18 hours.

On the other hand they are not considered faucets but if you get a "free" cryptocurrency they should be...
It's free coins whether you click on a claim button or spin a wheel. I'd consider that a faucet as well.

BC.Game will be added to the table in OP as well!
