841  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin High Performance on: November 14, 2013, 10:40:14 AM
Ok guys i managed to acquire a HP ProLiant DL585 G7 Server, fully poppulated with 4 AMD 64 FX dual-core Opteron 6278's, thats a total of 64 cores running at 2400 default and 2.7 Ghz turbo for 600$, good deal or bad deal. Which will be the best use for this server, solo or pool mine. Your thoughts?

You'll probably never recover your initial expenditure of $600. However, depending on other specs, getting a G7 for that price is probably not too bad. You can possibly resell it for more than that in the future (on eBay) when you're done mining with it.

How much power consumption at 100% load? I hope your running it at work where that doesn't matter. Also, noise.

Solo or pool depends on how long you can wait between payouts. I'd probably just aim for solo.

Although the number of cores sounds impressive, like many people here who've gotten high-core opterons you may be disappointed with the overall performance.

At 100% load what is your chainsperday in HP11? From there you can estimate how much coin it will generate and how quickly it'll start paying itself off.

Thanks for the very informative response, this will be running at work so power is not an issue, the server is being delivered tomorrow. So will check when it runs tomorrow. Now that you mentioned the poor performance I just realised my amd fx 8350 compared to my I7 3770 is only doing half the amount chains per day, is it that in general amd performs poorly when mining primecoin oppose to intel?

Seems like the botnets just came on board or did anybody tune their gpu's or asics?.   Grin 330 Mh currently on skc.coinmine.pl

Wohoo, with free power you can pretty much invest heavily in all those machine... Im jealous.....

People, I don't understand you! It's not profitable to mine with CPU/GPU if you must pay for the power!!!!!!!!!!

Hence the reason with free power its possible, like me.. Cheesy
845  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: which altcoin to mine with free power on: November 05, 2013, 01:23:55 AM
Ok i'm not going to explain where and how the free power is coming from but what you guys should know its not being stolen. now that that is out of the way fortunately for me i do have acces to free power, if you were fortunate enough in what altcoin would you mine and which hardware will you acquire. Remember its free power so no undervolting and that sort of optimizations are necessary.

Another idea would be renting out hashing power (altcoin only) like a vps type service but cpu and gpu, just an idea.

Let me hear your guys thoughts.

Cheers

Please explain how you get free power.. Smiley

Sorry mate that's not up for discussion.

To spice things up, i have acces three phase supply as well, but doubt ill use it, ok enough about the free power.  Grin

If it were me, I'd pick the coin with "the greatest living coin developer on earth."

I wonder who that can be, Sunny not doing too bad of job of late.

I'll just leave this here.

He he Grin Are you suggesting multipool ?
849  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: which altcoin to mine with free power on: November 04, 2013, 09:02:52 PM
Ok ill do some gridcoin for now and see how it goes. Some of my kit is only arriving the weekend which I will setup for prime and litecoin. If all goes well seen that i have free power i will donate to this post 0.25 btc for every 20btc earned which will be in the form of a lottery. The lottery will work in the form of a random number drawn to all the posters who posted in this thread.

So wish me luck.

Cheers

Pretty much any coin, the one with the highest profitability I guess.

Thats one of the problems, everybody jumps onto the most profitable coin which diminishes your shares, wont a coin with the best potential in terms services and market cap be more profitable, in hindsight its a waiting game and you might just loose out if the coin fails....what to do...what to do..
851  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: which altcoin to mine with free power on: November 04, 2013, 08:30:25 PM
Yes, it is enough!
I am mining  primecoin with 6 CPU Core i5 4570 Haswell and each one get block aproximately every 3 days.

Best place to trade XPM, LTC and FTC is www.btc-e.com.

Brilliant, what miner should i use for prime coins ?

Will the built in miner be ok or is there a better way like cgminer?
852  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: which altcoin to mine with free power on: November 04, 2013, 08:27:41 PM
There is no free power unless your Tesla.

I absolutely agree with you, let me rephrase.....I have access to paid for electricity that the state generate which i don't pay for. That better? lol

Lol  Grin

Just added a 4770k and MSI R9 270 to the list Cheesy

I also agreed that you should use your CPU to mine primecoin, I am doing the same thing.
And GPU you want to mine either Litecoin or Feathercoin. I am also doing this.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. @Kenshin how are you trading you ltc and ftc?
856  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: which altcoin to mine with free power on: November 04, 2013, 07:19:38 PM
You should mine scrypt based altcoins, they are much more profitable than sha256 based ones.
Litecoin, Feathercoin, CGB....that is your choise.
You need GPU, ATI 6th or 7th series and if you like to mine some CPU coin you need powerful CPU.

I currently have the following hardware.

I7 3770k
I5 2500k
8350FX

I'm getting a 6990 tomorrow.

Perfect!

Set CPU power to primecoin solo mining, 6990 to any altcoins is profitable to mine at the moment.
But if you have intention to keep your coins and waiting best price I advice you to collect some Litecoins!

You think that is enough hashing power to solo mine prime coins?

I think I should get more gpu's, the reason for the cpu's id for cpu only coins, but the botnets are killers. I think i should focus my attention on gpu's for now.
