To argue that religion is easier...as if that is evidence of its inferiority and all the more reason a higher intellect would seek to dismiss it...is laughably illogical.    Why would the more intelligent animals seek a harsher, less safe, more difficult reality which ends in annihilation, making your entire existence nothing more than a blink of irrelevancy, and then turn around and claim it is a superior faith based POV because you've really thought it through?  Lol.  Have you really?
I will tell you why atheism will always be a minority view.  Because theism is the only measure of hope one can find when they are in the position of being effectively oppressed by other human beings exploiting their superior might, which for all our supposed intelligence we still haven't figured out how to stop doing.   And you are deluding yourself if you believe the godless are any better at not reeking mayhem than religious zealots because they are every bit as zealous in their self worship.
842  Other / Politics & Society / Re: IRS claims it has LOST two years' worth of emails from former official Lerner on: July 01, 2014, 04:43:38 PM
I think it is interesting that the emails we do have show that the DOJ was in contact with Lerner trying to figure out a way to criminally prosecute these cases.  Nobody on the left seems to want to speak to that.  And if the White House didn't want to cast further suspicion the president really shouldn't have gotten on tv and declared that there wasn't a smidgen of corruption.

These may have been Bush appointees but that apparently has no bearing on whose water they were carrying.
I am curious...if a group had illegally claimed tex exempt status would not that be a matter for Justice to pursue?
843  Other / Off-topic / Re: It's not the pet, it's the irresponsible pet owner on: July 01, 2014, 11:57:24 AM
anyone remember Petey?  The control freaks did the same thing to German Shepherds and  Rottweilers, to the extent that it was against the law to breed them in Germany, where they originated.  It wasn't the dog's fault. If you have an aggressive dog, you know it, and you are responsible for its actions.  It doesn't matter what breed it is.

I find it entertaining that the ones who scream "racist" the loudest and the most often are so prejudiced.

845  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Iraq’s Christians See Putin As Savior on: July 01, 2014, 09:35:34 AM
The Iraqis have more faith in Putin than Obama. Putin is open about his Christianity while Obama seems to be ashamed of it while propping up the need for more muslims in America, at NASA, saying he will side with muslims when the political winds change, etc.

Came across a wonderful quote the other day:

Quote
Religions are like EULAs - most people don't read them, they prefer to scroll down to the bottom and click 'agree'.

...and that is the most constructive thing I have to add to this debate.
Men never do evil so completely or so joyfully than when they do it from religious conviction.

847  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Facebook reveals news feed experiment to control emotions on: June 30, 2014, 02:43:05 PM
it’s not a big deal. Our emotions are manipulated all the time by media, advertising and interaction with other humans. Facebook users will not be leaving the network and 99% of them will not change the behavior as a response to this news. Move along, there are more important events taking place in the world. Unethical?
848  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Thoughts on religion for a Sunday morning on: June 30, 2014, 02:34:25 PM
I believe that having a specific religion is not important, the important things are our actions, not our words.
and I believe that, like Protestantism, that is a cop out from not having to adhere to a moral code, you get to decide whether your actions are good or not.
I find this higher power is inconceivable, and you are a Catholic and have named this power God and given it a set of tools, rules and garments I suppose so it is easier for you to accept. Yet I am certain this inconceivable power exists, I'm just not buying the man made rules. My rules are in my heart, mind and soul. This power resides in all of us, in everything in the universe............all connected.

Some make the connection, others live in denial, some just ignorant. You get your moral code from the Bible? Good luck with that.........

This power in the universe is much greater than I, I am powerless in comparison. but with an open mind I can see and I can hear..........
lol. No, I'm not, because as I've noted a thousand times, Catholics have no more answer to the theodetic question than do Protestants.

My rules are in my heart, mind and soul.

which is exactly what I said, sana thanks. And I believe that making your own rules is taking, no pun intended, the way out.

850  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why has the left wing abandoned Israel? on: June 30, 2014, 01:21:39 PM
My issue with it is that we (the US) have worked so hard to tip the scales for the Israelis, that they have not only no sense of urgency, but not even an inclination toward being willing to make any compromise toward peace. They are like the yappy little dog that fiercely barks at "intruders" while standing behind the legs of their human.
851  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why has the left wing abandoned Israel? on: June 30, 2014, 01:06:42 PM
The Israelis keep appropriating Palestinian territory.  America doesn't demand a reason why, so they continue apace.
Basically they have pushed all Palestinians into the Gaza strip and a few other ghettos (isn't that an ironic term to use here!). When  they feel like it they bomb the snot out of it and nobody takes much notice.  -  I don't know where zolace gets the idea that the liberal media condemn them, they don't.

Just google "Gaza bombing images".

As I said in an earlier post, the Israeli Jews are, and have been for some time, treating Palestinians as shabbily as Europeans a few centuries ago treated their forefathers, including an approach only a little less harsh than the holocaust.
852  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Antarctic's glacial melt - volcanoes, or global warming? on: June 30, 2014, 01:00:27 PM
Seasons are caused by changes in the orientation of the earth relative to the sun and when it is summer in the northern hemisphere it is winter down south.

I wasn't rubbishing the Smithsonian just the interpretation you have gleaned (either directly or via some other moron) from it.
853  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Antarctic's glacial melt - volcanoes, or global warming? on: June 30, 2014, 12:49:37 PM
The earth's orbit is changing.  We have been in an oval orbit around the sun.  20 or 30 years ago, the earth began changing its orbit to a round one.
That means the earth is closer to the sun during winter months.  The earth is still tilted, but the affect is to more or less even out the temperatures.  Here in Maine, we have long winters.  There were snow storms in June.  We used to have an unbearable August.  Now August is not quite so hot and humid.  Even though winter seems to last longer, the temperatures don't dip down and stay there for weeks.  We still have negative numbers, but for only 3 or 4 days, then the temps rise.  What is happening is a moderation of temps all year long.

I'm not sure how other parts of the globe are affected.  The article did say the equator is moving north.  So the hottest part of the earth is now some degrees north of where is usually is.  Maybe that's why the southwest is so much hotter now.  Even the north and south poles will be effected.  They are also closer to the sun year round.
What a load of crap.  You even nearly pointed out the stupidity of your claims.  It is winter here while it is summer there.  Climate is not connected to what you claim.

In Ontario where I am at the moment pit bulls are banned. If you owned one before the ban you can keep it but it cannot be outside even on your own property unless it is muzzled. If you take it for a walk it must be on a leash and muzzled. It has put an end to attacks and killings by pit bulls. Some may say that the government may be going to far but I support it. Nothing is too much when it come to protecting our children.

I say we make everyone wander around blindfolded and screw the first person they bump into for a couple nights every year. You know, a variation on the cockroach approach. They could even make it part of their ritual beliefs. Problem solved. Three generations, tops.

Jews were, on the whole, better treated in the Middle East than their coreligionists were in Europe.
Modern Jews in Israel, on the whole, act towards Palestinians in the same way Europeans did to their forefathers.
In other words, Jews may have left Europe but their racist/theological attitudes have remained European.
857  Other / Off-topic / Re: It's not the pet, it's the irresponsible pet owner on: June 30, 2014, 11:29:13 AM
I know your daughter doesn't want to piss off the neighbor, but she needs to think about the safety of others, too-- we had a similar situation years ago in San Antonio. A guy down the block had 3 dogs that kept getting loose and killing cats. Well, after they mauled my cat ( who luckily got away)-- I did some investigating by talking to neighbors and found out they not only killed some kitties (which the dog owner didn't care about), they also had killed a puppy and chased a boy into his home.... They jumped a fence and tore apart a cat in front of a 12 year old girl.

So I went to the owner, told him what his animals had been up to-- and that I wanted them contained. He hemmed and hawed and I told him that if his animals ever attacked one of my girls I would own his house, his BMW and everything else... then I told the Dad of the little girl who saw her cat killed in her backyard where the dogs that did it lived. I don't know what the Dad told the guy, but the wife of the dog owner came down to our house the next day and bawled at my husband that she hoped I was happy because her husband had the dogs put down.

Well, I was relieved... but I never asked them to do that. I asked them to maintain control. They chose to kill their animals instead of putting in a better fence. They didn't talk to us for years until they had a little girl-- then they seemed to "get it" -- that we were genuinely worried their pack of dogs would maim a child.

She needs to call the authorities.... she would feel terrible if that dog killed again-- what if it is a child next time?

I am sooo sorry to hear about this... and the pit bull owner should bear the financial responsiblities for the damage caused by his dog... that would be the right thing to do.  So sad that pit bulls get such a bad rap by horrible owners... my neighbor has a pit who is the most gentle dog.. but because of their rep, I can't help but be a bit wary around her... . Some people should not have animals.. and if they are not fit for animals, they should not have kids either.... sending my prayers.

One of the theories I've heard is that our consciousness is rooted in quantum states, so as far as the end of your post goes ("brains that operate on the quantum level"), that might just be ... The brain.
there's zero evidence for this idea. it's a hack idea.

yes and in a short amount of time. read some kurzweil, it's good stuff
just don't listen to anything he has to say about biological brains. he doesn't know what he's talking about on that subject.
Someone tried peddling this shit at Beyond Belief and got ripped to shreds during Q&A. It was awesome but also makes you feel embarrassed for the guy because you can tell he wasn't expecting it.
He must have thought he was at a TED conference.
was it stuart hammeroff? that guy wouldn't shut the fuck up at one of the conferences I went to, and I ended up having a 15 minute conversation with him during the poster session. conclusion: the guy is fucking crazy.
It sure was!Lawrence Krauss is the first to respond: "From a physics perspective, everything you've said is complete nonsense, and maybe I'm being too polite. [...] We can talk about it later, but you're just wrong. Skip to ~23min for Q&A (the video is a couple hours because it has multiple speakers; Hammeroff is the first one, though).
That was actually a lot more tame than how I remembered it.
