gmax, why did you delete this portion of what you said in this part of our github exchange?  if i'm wrong in not finding this please let me know.
https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin.org/pull/162

"gmaxwell:    Whats there to suspect? I'll state it right out: I will not make changes to the software that trod over the consent of a minority of its users simply because a majority wills it. The majority can go start some other software that I can't edit if it wants to impose its will or politics on a minority, if the minority chooses to use it then at least is by their consent.

cypherdoc:   hmmm. i don't get this line of thought. if satoshi agreed with your general line of thinking, then why did he design the whole mining process to depend on a MAJORITY of miners, as in >50%, determining which is the correct blockchain in the case of a fork?"

Just because they don't like us does not mean that we should not help the civilians.

"we"?

i thought you said you're from Germany.  my, how easy was that?  are you Syrian?

To quote myself: Some rebel groups are indeed anti west/us - but so what? Just because they don't like us does not mean that we should not help the civilians.

How could you misunderstand that? Or is Germany not part of the West in your opinion? Please elaborate further. On second thought, please don't. You sound like a republican. (We germans find you funny because you stand for all that is wrong with the US Wink)

i actually understand you perfectly.

you send in the cruise missiles.

If I had any I would personally send them up his ass.

uh huh.  sure you would.  with that kinda attitude i have to ask if you've even taken a few minutes to think about the implications of this whole thing?
Quote

So let's make this clear: You don't want to send troops in (I can realte, human lives and stuff) but at the same time you don't like the fact that they could use missiles because they cost to much? Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the US on top of the worlds defense budget? Isn't your weapons industry one of the mayor exporteurs and isn't that one of the foundations of your economy? What do you do with the stuff if not use it? Put it in your foregarden and try to raise tulips around it?

oh great.  so since we have them, lets use them.  they're getting dusty. Roll Eyes

I think you don't have your facts about Syria staight and just want to let off some steam, but we in Europe have to welcome the people who want asylum and we hear their stories. Believe me when I tell you that it should be the duty of every Country who can to help those people. And not only with food and shelter in the country itself like your strange Congressman said, he has absolutely no idea what he is talking about.

then like i said, do your duty and do it.  you're closer anyways.  and you guys owe us for not occupying you after WW2.

here in the states police agencies routinely use cs gas to disperse protesters.  which i do believe are chemical weapons.
Chemical yes - Chemical weapons no.
http://www.opcw.org/about-chemical-weapons/what-is-a-chemical-weapon/
here you find a detailed description.

Grayson makes a great point.

why do we not help the 30% homeless, the direct result of war, by sending in food and medical supplies instead?

or is there a different agenda by the sending in of cruise missiles at the cost of $1.5M per Tomahawk?

8446  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What does it say when Vladimir Putin acts more Presidential than Barack Obama? on: September 15, 2013, 12:24:16 AM
the US has nothing to gain by interfering in Syria other than some self perceived moral authority or "exceptionalism" which given the results of the past interventions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya has been an utter failure.
8447  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What does it say when Vladimir Putin acts more Presidential than Barack Obama? on: September 15, 2013, 12:20:45 AM
Are you fucking stupid?
Pardon my french, but seriously? Syria is attacking it's own citizens with chemical weapons!
I am from Germany and I can assure you that Putin is NOT acting more democratic (presidential) than Obama in any way, that statement is just plain stupid and wrong. Russia is an ally of Syria and is afraid of it's investments going down the drain.
Next time please read up a little before posting stupid comments like that!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia%E2%80%93Syria_relations#Economic_relations
And just fyi: Europe is flooded with syrian children who lost their parents in governement attacks against their own population!

so do you actually think that sending in a bunch of cruise missiles to bomb as yet unspecified targets, while at the same time promising no further escalation of military action, will seriously do anything other than cause a worsening of the situation?

I think doing nothing and letting civilians die in vain is worse. yeah. It is pretty easy to condemn your governemnt for trying to stop the slaughter with a few airstrikes and "praising" Russia for it's intervention, but the fact remains that chemical weapons count as warcrimes and are punishable by death. Even in Germany, and we don't have a death penalty under normal circumstances. The only reason why Germany has not taken any sides right now is because we are allied with both Russia and the US. But you can be sure that Putins statement was not his own but a direct reaction to European intervention...

did you read the article i linked to?  seems we have a different set of facts.

there is significant intelligence that believes it was the rebels themselves who used the chem weapons.  the timing is highly suspicious as well as the attack occurred right when the inspectors landed in Syria.  doesn't make alot of sense for the gov't to have done it then.

also, sending in cruise missiles to weaken the Syrian forces that control the govt's chem weapons doesn't make alot of sense either in that this will make it easier for the rebels to get control of the chems.  and just who are the rebels anyway?  sounds like a bunch of anti-US thugs to begin with.  what exactly does the US stand to gain other than an all out war that we'll then have to intervene in with our own sons and daughters?
8448  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon users: bitcoind and slush's/generalfaults mining pool setup on: September 15, 2013, 12:13:54 AM
The devices using different login names ?

change the setting and see how it goes Smiley

Yes.  All clients use different names.  When I used VDIFF_TARGET=5  I got the correct share/min, but after it goes into checking client diff it re-evaluates and diff goes up to 1k+ then down to 300.  The variable diff does not work too well for me.

I set POOL_TARGET=600 and disabled the variable diff functionality.  Works ok now.  Might need to hack the diff for each client during subscription once I get clients with different hashing rates.

With 600 I get mini rig going at ~11 shares/min.

any feedback on this strategy?

8450  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Roger Ver Endorses Trace Mayer For Bitcoin Foundation Board Seat on: September 14, 2013, 11:56:26 PM
As an aside, it is a sad commentary when morality is considered by some to be a "fringe political belief".
I think it is is a sad commentary that we have a community which tolerates calling hardworking and generous people insulting terms like "statist" on the mere suspicion that their beliefs are different— as a quick out in in argument—, without even necessarily understanding their beliefs well enough to know if or how much their beliefs differ.

I think part of a good moral code is understanding that people have a diversity of views on what constitutes morality and that none of us are so wise and free of cognitive defect to know with absolute certainty the optimal path.  Moreover, if Bitcoin is to be a big tent that is adopted and supported by the whole world, we must be tolerate of people whos views are not identical to our own, so long as they are sufficiently compatible, and certainly not be intolerant of views which we merely _suspect_ to be different.

I think that if the Bitcoin foundation is to exist it ought to exist for the sake of Bitcoin not for the sake of advancing any broader political ideology, even ideologies that I support. Fortunately, because Bitcoin itself is a liberating technology there are many other laudable agendas which the success of Bitcoin will also advance without any special effort.  The support of Bitcoin by anarcho-capitalists is already assured by Bitcoin's very nature, but to include others we must have representatives which are tolerant enough to understand and accept that a diversity of views exist without their holders being evil. ... or at least tactful enough to express dissent without the name calling.

gmax, i'm curious.  what do you think of me?

i was in those same tempestuous threads arguing against what you were advocating as much, if not more, than Trace.  i thought you were wrong then to exclude Matonis and Ver and i still think you were wrong.

How many wars do we need to go through before the American people realize that we have a gov't gone mad?  When will we realize that special interests are controlling this country, namely the banksters and military industrial complex?

Ask yourselves what have we accomplished in the wars of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and potentially now Syria?  The first 3 are in utter chaos with the violence and killing even more extreme than ever.

A "surgical" pinprick consisting of cruise missile strikes in Syria is naive at best and terribly dangerous at worst.  We risk a much wider boots on the ground confrontation that the Obama Administration refuses to even consider.

What does this have to do with Bitcoin?  Everything.  Without control of the printing press, our gov't would be incapable of carrying out such "exceptionalism".

Make sure you view the video of Congressman Alan Grayson.

The coin has those 2 hand exchanging binary code( meaning bitcoin in one version and B in the other) to symbolize the flow of digital currency.

so Fisgos.  what are you proposing the coins be made of?  the brown color almost implies a hard rubber-like material?  very cool btw.

there are some seriously "rad" designs in here.

What you're describing doesn't make sense except coincidentally. 0.8.4 and 0.8.5 are nearly identical, save for turning off the check that was getting tripped up by the negative version transactions.

I wonder— is everyone having frequent problems on OSX running filevault?

no.  i have Filevault turned off specifically to try and avoid this problem but yet it occurred again in 0.8.5 Sad

and this is a fresh install version of mac os 10.8.4 that is only 2 mo old.
8456  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elizabeth T. Ploshay for Bitcoin Foundation board on: September 14, 2013, 09:22:45 PM
Here's a video that Elizabeth just posted:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4dOLLjiBNg

She's pretty fluent, but I can spot a few times where she hesitates due to reaching the end of the line on the script she's reading from. Not so professional, not so convincing. Notice how she's looking slightly high and to her right; this is where her script is positioned.

yes.  also note that when you're reading a prepared script and you underestimate just how long the sentence is and you're gasping for enough air to make it to the end.
8457  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elizabeth T. Ploshay for Bitcoin Foundation board on: September 14, 2013, 08:59:55 PM
she's young.  she's also reading from a prepared script.  and only involved in Bitcoin since April.

not that these are necessarily bad things but experience matters.  so does a deep conceptual and philosophical understanding of what Bitcoin is, what problems it is meant to solve, and exactly how it is going about doing this.  these perspectives come with time and maturity.

guys like Platzer who have lived, breathed, and taken political and financial risks with Bitcoin for many years are going to serve the the goals of Bitcoin much better in the long run, imo.  again, i have never talked once with Platzer nor have any relationship with him whatsoever. likewise with Elizabeth.
8458  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elizabeth T. Ploshay for Bitcoin Foundation board on: September 13, 2013, 03:45:21 PM
many of the BF members have openly stated that they spend 99% of their forum time here on Bitcointalk.

so the fact that Elizabeth has not bothered to post here indicate that she will be out of touch with the vast majority of the community's opinion either willfully or out of ignorance?

If I were her, I wouldn't be posting in this thread either.  There are few if any people here who can actually vote in the process and those few are far outnumbered by people who either just hate the foundation because they think it's trying to claim domination of Bitcoin, or don't like Elizabeth because shes either "Supports the Jews" or is an unattractive woman.

I'd encourage you to email her if you have questions.

And for the record, I spend less than 10% of my forum time on BitcoinTalk.

well, i guess we disagree esp. if you take the position that the only ones she needs to talk to are voting BF members.  fyi, i actually support the BF concept even tho i'm not a member.

this whole Bitcoin experiment could be arguably described as the virtualization of money.  this forum is one large thinktank where ideas about all sorts of matters relevant to Bitcoin are conveyed on a regular basis.

how else will she communicate with us?  if she's not willing to talk to us then how can she represent us?

lol, yeah good point - Wait, what?  We've never reviewed ANY mining hardware, and have spent the last two months talking about whether ASICs as a whole are bad for Bitcoin.

What are you talking about?

Nvm it was codinginmysleep's blog, so many bitcoin podcast and blogs, I lose track. Anyway still a bitcoin blog/podcast shouldn't have a developer in it's pocket, it justs looks bad. You really should be as independent as you can be.

Why would it be right for a company like Bitpay or Bitinstant to hire a core developer, but inappropriate for a media outlet to support a developer?   I can flatly tell you that's not in the cards, but I'm totally not seeing your logic here.

why don't we try a little experiment?

see that line over there to the left in his sig?  why don't you try putting him in your pocket for a little pocket change and see what happens?
