possible causes?

im shattered but will checkin for support/opinions when i return from slumber

e2a - after 7 months of daily argue, bitmain paid my compensation. dont give up mrpark!!

It says "disable us one by one" in one of the loops.
You or support might still make it a go if only one asic is malfunctioning (1/60=1.5%).
How long did it stay in this state?

Miner is new in the box (never opened), got it later in the day yesterday, Dec 30

Well, if you allow for escrow I'll take the chance. If you agree PM me and I'll reply and cc OgNasty in on it, and send you the shipping address.

8583  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: January 01, 2015, 06:04:43 PM
it moves a ton of air (150 cfm or more)    but runs at 3600 to 3800 rpm.  it is fine in a garage not attached. or I guess use a speed controller on it.

push noctua is 2700 rpm pull silverstone is 1900 rpm -  not quite cool as I would like. considering I am letting outside air at -5c into the room via the window,  but 381 freq is giving 1250 gh at 621 watts plus powering the 2 fans. Sound is really good. cost is too high 24 + 16 = 40 and it went up  to 24+20 = 44

HW's are decent.  Would I run this setup 24/7/365  yeah if I was running 1 or 2 s-5's   but if I had 20 or 30 no.  I think I am just a bit too hot see below.

>snip image<

One point-stock fan does not move that much air comparing with SP20 at a low 30 setting. The choice of the fan clearly was not right, since the S5 fan even at 325 (hashing at 1070gh) is MUCH louder than the SP20 fan is at setting 30 (hashing at 1360Gh).
Very much looking forward to see how Noctua-Noctua (expensive at ~$48) or Noctua-Delta ($32) fan combos will work.
8584  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Bitmain Antminer S5 - A wonderfully modable and well performing miner on: January 01, 2015, 05:45:16 PM
Great review!
Care to mention what fans did you use. One looks like Cooler master, but which model?
In addition, how do you power them up. It looks like you don't power them off the miner connector itself.
Powering them via Molex adapters - Not connected to the S5 controller at all.

Antec pull fan : http://www.amazon.com/Antec-TriCool-LED-Cooling-3-Speed/dp/B00066FHEW/
Thermaltake push fan : http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Blue-Eye-Adjustable-Control-AF0026/dp/B003IWN23O/

Sorry, I was never involved in computer modding before bitcoin, hence molex adapters are unfamiliar to me.
Do you mean molex to SATA like radioshack ones below?

It saves an alarming amount of weight by opening up the top and bottom, as well as replacing out the metallic sides. The S5 is a total lightweight compared to the S3. And that means less steel being shipped round the world.
Replacing out the metalic cover with a plastic /perspex one sure saves weight, but how much weight would a plastic / perspex top and bottom add to the overall weight of the S5? (rhetorical question so you don't have to answer 'cause I know it is insignificant)
+1. while a bottom isnt really necessary (but whats $1 of plastic that weighs 60g?) a top would definitely improve airflow. Ive seen an improvement in temperatures but putting a few clear strips of tape over the top to improve the wind tunneling, and a top cover is only $2 or less of sheet plastic like the sides. huge improvement over the tanky S3

To continue...(if you know your tank facts...with nothing else to do):
1. S1 is Mark V (WWI)
2. S3 is a "Tiger" (heavy)
3. S5 is T34? or will be due to vast numbers produced
4. SP20 is M3 "Lee" (light, maneuverable=adjustable)
5. SP30, 31, 35-Merkava (different time period), not WWII

If only S5 was in the same case like SP20... Or like S3...

personally, i don't care, but closed case looks more 'retailish', I agree.

It saves an alarming amount of weight by opening up the top and bottom, as well as replacing out the metallic sides. The S5 is a total lightweight compared to the S3. And that means less steel being shipped round the world.

newbs don't want to see the machine "insides", but if you want to grow business, you have to sell to them as well. it is pure psychology/marketing.
make a cheap plastic top, then explain that top might or should be taken off during operation.
8587  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S5 review on: December 31, 2014, 10:59:40 PM
15A circuit, 1300W PSU, 2 miners living in perfect harmony:

Ebony (Overclocked S5): 1240 GH/s
Ivory (Underclocked SP20): 1140 GH/s

Each miner is drawing 700 W (+/- 2%) at the wall.

ha ha, I have almost exactly the same setup for a pair and a similar thought  Grin.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=902305.msg9993723#msg9993723
Once I get quiet S5 fans-will do a second pair, otherwise it would cause some stress during the NY holidays.
8588  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: December 31, 2014, 09:57:08 PM
Weve ordered 24 of these, should be here next week.

Phillip, a tremendous thanks for all the insight and noise fixes. Much appreciated.

Im assuming yes, but I take it there would be no issues running (2) of these off a single EVGA 1300G2 PSU?

Were adding this to our S3+ Farm, and we have a bunch of extra 1300s we'd like to put to use.

Next week, 80 T/Hash up and running! Smiley

Strato

you can but the cables need to placed correctly  .

Hey Phillip,

Could you elaborate a bit?  Obviously we would run 4 x cables to each unit, and the split pairs running I assume to the same side of a single miner?

Just want to make sure we dont burn the server room down. Wink

Strato

The 1300 would get pretty maxed out by any overclocking, but I can do 375MHz on a CS650M, which is a 612W rail. If your PSU doesnt have 8 discinct wires, be careful with how much load goes down a single wire. a 2-headed cable might get hot if it powers a single board (280-300W draw). using a 16awg or better splitter is likely better than using only 1 socket on a blade as it distributes the input amperage better.

Good point indeed.

Would running our server room a few degrees cooler make a big difference?  We keep it at 65 F. I could bump it down to 62 or 61.

Also, wondering if anyone has given thought to putting together a blower / dryer exhaust hose system.

You can get a single industrial blower rated at 4000+ CFM, MacGyver a distro umbilical with 3" Dryer Hoses, which are super cheap, and easilly run 10x outputs off the blower giving each miner 400 CFM airflow. Using 1 large 18" air tube, you could place your blower away from your miners, or even outside if air temps are cold.

Just a thought!

Strato

I am not sure that it would matter. I put my first S5 in front of a max airflow from Vornado fan (they are quite powerful)-and it did not cause much improvement in fan speed (still ~3.5 thou rpm even at setting 325). In the same conditions, S1 fan typically powered down to 1600-1800 rpm.

[...] this means you need an ip scan program.  I think angry ip or advanced ip are still good for windows.

http://angryip.org/

http://www.advanced-ip-scanner.com/

I am running my home on macs so I am no longer sure if the 2 above are still good links

What do you use on Mac OS X for that purpose?

I use iNet from apple app store (maybe called inet toolbox now)-used to be $4-5 (maybe I bought on Thanksgiving sale), but $7.99 now
8591  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: 1155GH(+Over Clock Potential), 590W, Jan 8th Shipping [Sales Open] on: December 31, 2014, 06:17:56 PM
So these ones are setup to use DHCP out of the box instead of static 192.168.1.whatever the old ones were?

Yes, it comes preconfigured to grab DHCP.

Once it got the IP through DHCP, you will see the MAC address in web gui as well, so you can link (reserve) IP address and MAC address of your miner in the router settings, meaning that router will not change the IP address for your miner, although it is still going through DHCP (Not static).
This might be a good idea because you can "lose" the IP you setup first time, making it necessary to check again, which is a nuisance when you have many miners.
My router is constantly changing my phone, laptop, etc IP addresses otherwise.
8592  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: 1155GH(+Over Clock Potential), 590W, Jan 8th Shipping [Sales Open] on: December 31, 2014, 06:00:19 PM

You will need an ethernet cable (at least cat 5) as well so you can connect to your router (NOT PC!). Miner will find your network, but you will need to find it's IP by using advanced Ip scanner on PC or iNET on a Mac (it will be called antminer). Then, you connect to this IP adddress in the browser by simply typing it in in the www window, like 192.168.1.120
To get amperage, you divide ~600W (at default speed, but could be slightly higher) by your wall voltage (110/120, 220 or 240)=amperes at the wall
However, you would NOT be able to live in the same room as this miner (unless you extensively modify it with one or even two "silent" fans).

Ok thanks for the info bro !!! Last question, promised. Which type of fan Should I buy ? 80mm - 120 mm ? Which type ? and what brand you would suggest to get silent fans ? Maybe silverstone or another good brand ? Thanks and happy christmas / new future year to all Smiley

I dont really know which will work well, but here is the thread and relevant post(s) from phil

Cheaper silversones are on backorder, more expensive will ship next week only from resellers.

back to fan tests I got the expensive noctua 3000 rpm  pwm fan

it is now the push fan

noctua push :

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KFCRATC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

silverstone pull:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A460TK6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

btw the way both noctua and silverstone prices went up on amazon.

this is now more then 24 + 24 = 48 dollar mod.  there are better fan choices price-wise.

Just put it in and all sound problems are gone.

previous price silverstone (16.99) is on backorder. Do you rec any other fan , especially for pull?

I found a really good deal on ebay five minutes ago.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Delta-AFB1212SHE-Computer-Case-Power-Fan-120X120mm-Lot-of-5-/191443200211?pt=US_Computer_Case_Fans&hash=item2c92e768d3

5 fans for 29 + 12 = 41 bucks  they are pwm   meaning 4 pin  speed control direct plug into the s-5

2 of these would be nice for an s-5.

I  just ordered 1 set of 5 fans.

how silent/noisy are these: more or less same as noctua and silverstone? i thought that you used one delta before?

I used a 3 pin fixed  speed delta  which was  about 148cfm ran at 2800 to 3000 rpm it was a decent  fan purchased  form the same ebay seller  months ago. it was louder then I liked.  these on ebay will ramp up and down if clocked higher or lower at 8 dollars each two of these would be decent.  they will cool as well or better then the silverstone or the noctua will cool.  they will be not as quiet as the silverstone/noctua

they will be much quieter then the  stock fan.  since I order them from the west coast and I am on the east coast .  I may get them for monday.
I purchased them to help buyers find the best fan compromise ... at  8 bucks each 2 for 16 just clip a tiny piece on the fan connector and they will plug right in.

I think a lot of people would like this better then the stock fan.  and at 16 bucks an s-5 pretty cheap much cheaper then 2 silverstones or 2 noctua's

thanks, much appreciated. in the end, I ordered this set and two noctuas, which have a very fast shipment using prime (will be here on Fri).
silversones were either backordered or shipping mid next week, so I cancelled those.

Hi Syke,

Thank you for the review posting!!   Cheesy
I understand you're imitating our marketing techniques, but why did you copy the miner loudness ?  Grin Grin Grin

so both of you could afford a beer at the end of the day Tongue A way to cut costs... hearing is overrated from a designer/engineer perspective. Cost from a managerial perspective.

only for the nearsighted people. I can afford (electricity wise) many more miners that i will NOT employ simply because of the noise and my house configuration-no basement. How many people are in the same category-I suspect many, but I am 90-99% sure that nobody at SPT and BMT had bothered to investigate.

I've another 2 small questions.. If someone could answer me please (sorry for being noob).

1) If you buy it you only need to buy a  PSU and then connect to the antminer right, follow tutos and then you'll get your estimated hashes right ? You  don't need to do anything more?

2) Btw, I've seen that Amp suggested are 70A (So would be a problem if you connect this item into your home at some room ?

Thanks in advance

8599  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: transaction validation on: December 31, 2014, 03:43:20 PM
That feels kind of low. 4TH/s to process just 1 transaction a day? Feels like a lot of wasted computing power.

A simple answer would be that there are not enough transactions yet.
8600  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: transaction validation on: December 31, 2014, 03:42:33 PM
This is really not 100% accurate. You will only actually validate (confirm) a transaction if you actually 'find' a block at which point you will most likely (depending on your, or your pool's policy on transactions) confirm several hundred (if not thousand) transactions.

If you do not find any blocks then you will not validate/confirm any transactions.

Your miners work for the pool, pool operator divided earned btc between pool participants=you did process transactions (as long as your pool got blocks).
It is difficult to argue otherwise.
