The blockchain doesn't store links or text it only stores address and stuff.  So unless they had bitcoin-qt used on an IP address of a illegal website I can't see how it can be in the blockchain.  Then all it means is an IP address has been saved.  IP addresses aren't created for any website in particular.

It can store any data.

Yeah in binary if you gonna send millions of 0.00000001 tx's.

No. Take a look at https://blockchain.info/tx/b34de232518e704370da916439bd3de35b3f9a6e3b1346a2adfdcb233b7bebbf. See the text message?

Don't want to if its CP but hey rather than ban bitcoin I've got a better idea just ban the internet that'll stop online crime.  I can see this being used to slur bitcoin but not stop it.

Once we have a definitive answer. Please have gavin or someone else issue a counter tweet

Why should they bother just because someone started rumour that's not even possible.

I really don't see how a link text can be considered CP at all...

If it's just a text link then it's ok. But someone can embed a low-res image...

What a ASCII image?

867  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Flattr to start using bitcoin on: April 28, 2013, 12:50:22 PM
I emailed Flattr support the following message:

Quote
I think it'd be very good for your service to accept bitcoin. Then the receiver could choose to receive their payments in bitcoin if they choose so when the Flattr was made in bitcoin. They are many merchent services now that will allow you to accept bitcoin and be paid in USD. Which all work out cheaper than PayPal or Visa.

And got the following reply:

Hi

Yes we plan to add support to use bitcoins, can though not say when it will be added yet.

Regards Linus

I'm co presenting next week in London with Flattr board member. I'll get the scoop and post here!

If anyone is in the area, let me know!

If I lived within commuting distance of London I would have loved to come.  Did you get any extra info?
868  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What version of Linux? on: April 28, 2013, 12:44:58 PM
https://www.kernel.org/
you should use the most recent version (3.8.10).

Well I know what you meant and probably does everyone else. But I just want you to know that Linux itself is just the kernel which on it's own is pretty useless for an enduser. And therefore asking for a version of Linux is misleading.

You are searching for a GNU/Linux Distro that suits your needs. Although I do think gentoo is the best to use, it's probably not the best for you.
You want something that works out of the box so Ubuntu should be fine for you. You could also use xubuntu if you prefer it's GUI but it's basically the same.
If you don't want cannonical to sell you to amazon follow this tutorial right after installation:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/192269/how-can-i-remove-amazon-search-results-from-the-dash

Now about your installation:
If your PC has a 64bit CPU use the 64bit version of course. Don't even try the 32bit version.

Are you running it natively or in a VM?

Your hardware shouldn't be a problem the only problem with hardware support you could get is 3D performance. WLAN problems are part of the past and your box should definitely boot up.

Could you please write down the reason for the kernel panic? The last time I installed ubuntu on someone's pc it messed up the partitions somehow and panicked that it couldn't find the root partition. After configuring grub myself it worked.

Also I don't think there's any use for the LTS version unless you are lazy because you can always do a release upgrade I suppose. Correct me if I'm wrong.

//edit
you are definitely using a 64bit image on a 32bit CPU. You probably messed something up during download.
Use this one for xubuntu: http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/raring/release/xubuntu-13.04-desktop-i386.iso

Xubunto worked, the Ubuntu 64 bit said AMD in the file name and I have an intel centrino chipset so I'm assuming that is probably why I was having the problem.

Xubuntu is much better than Ubuntu IMO.  Stick with the LTS version and set your security updates to install automatically.  Then you'll be good until 2017.  Also do not add any repo's that your not 100% sure of as this is the only real way to get malware.  If you don't know why its asking you for your password don't enter it but that should go without saying.
869  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What version of Linux? on: April 27, 2013, 07:50:12 PM
Xubuntu is my favourite distro its very lightweight and feature rich.  It also runs faster than any other Xfce based distro's I've tried.

https://forums.butterflylabs.com/showwiki.php?title=FAQ:What+is+the+warranty+period+on+your+devices
"The PCB (The board that the ASIC chips are mounted on) carry a lifetime warranty. Lifetime is defined as the length of time we are manufacturing that product. Once we stop manufacturing that particular product, we will not be able to warranty the product any longer, since we no longer have replacement stock."

Thanks, looks like then our three pre-orders only have a one year warranty from when they ship.  We could do with a EU supplier as we'd get two years warranty then.  Plus it'd probably be cheaper to get them into Iceland import tax wise if we could find suitable hosting there.
871  Economy / Securities / Re: [BTC-TC] Red Star Mining - 180(GH/s) on: April 27, 2013, 12:55:12 PM
Is it product lifetime? Your models are already superseded.

I've not been able to find a clear definition of there lifetime warranty.
872  Economy / Securities / Re: [BTC-TC] Red Star Mining - 180(GH/s) on: April 27, 2013, 12:41:13 PM
When are you planning the move to Iceland to run on volcano power?

Doesn't BFL use the lowest 'nm' chip size, making them the lowest theoretical power usage and therefore longest usable life.

I assume by lifespan you mean maintaining a profitable Hash Reward/Power Cost ratio.
Actual lifespan of the chip before it dies is another thing, and it's worth considering, since they have a lot more power running through them than they were designed for.

Hosting in Iceland is just an idea but finding suitable hosting there may be difficult.  BFL ASIC's have a lifetime warranty.

873  Economy / Securities / Re: [BTC-TC] Red Star Mining - 180(GH/s) on: April 26, 2013, 08:34:26 PM
I am all for selling, however the first miner will make most quick profit, I think once BFL will start shipping regularly they will ship out orders fast so the early start does not seem to make up for the hashing power * 9/10 in the long run.

For example:
Two months of mining @ 50gh/s at difficulty 14.000.000 = $14.500
Two months of mining @ 450gh/s at difficulty 140.000.000 = $13.000

Twelve months of mining @ 50gh/s at (average difficulty guesstimate) 50.000.000 = $ 21.000
Twelve months of mining @ 450gh/s at (average difficulty guesstimate) 140.000.000 = $ 64.000

BFL will eventually ship, but ASICMINER are promising new ASICS (they delivered first batch) within the next 5 DAYS! Not sure if blades or USB miners but investing BTC160 in ASICMINER Asics that actually ship (and fast. Last batch had people reporting miners in hand in 4 days after auction close) will have us up and running much quicker. I also think that once BFL starts shipping SC's being order nr 1000 or 3000 won't matter THAT much when they get production ramped up.

Lets sell the first order for anything over BTC150 and invest in NOW delivery hash rate and bring on the 2 other SC when they deliver.

We probably not going to sell it until there ready for shipping.  What are there (GH/s)/$ and (GH/s)/W.  The blades are only 10(GH/s) aren't they and last I heard were selling for BTC75.00 each in auction.  The BFL move would bag us an extra 500(GH/s).  So if the blades are 10(GH/s) we need to be paying about BTC3.00 each to match that.  I know a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush but with BFL lower power usage them boards will have a longer life span.  If we can sell it and not reach a clear consensus on what to buy a motion will be held.

Any more or anyone else's ideas are welcome.
874  Economy / Securities / Re: [BTC-TC] Red Star Mining - 180(GH/s) on: April 25, 2013, 08:39:43 PM
What are investors ideas on selling our first pre-ordered SC for >BTC160.00.  Then we could pre-order another ten SC's and we'd still have two pre-orders from last summer coming.  Taking our hash rate to be delivered from 180(GH/s) to 680(GH/s).  With each share raising from 2.691991326(MH/s)per share to 10.169745009(MH/s)per share of pre-ordered ASIC's.  I've seen pre-order #1799 being offered for BTC190.00 and our first pre-order is within one-thousand of that.  Or should we hold out for our early pre-order.  As both ways have there advantages.

I would even rather see you selling the pre order for BTC160.00 if give the chance and holding the money until you can order actual deliverables from ASICMINER (their blades in next auction or USB devices when available, should be any day).

Yeah holding out for other hardware that will ship fast is a good idea.  Although once BFL start shipping SC's the lead time should start to come right down and we probably wont sell it until there shipping.  Doesn't BFL use the lowest 'nm' chip size, making them the lowest theoretical power usage and therefore longest usable life.  Plus aren't BFL the best (GH/s)/$ and they offer hosting.  So we don't have to worry about EU import taxes and space in my apartment.  Plus electricity is cheaper than the UK in the US even tho the UK probably has the cheapest electricity in the EU.

BFL is the most efficient (GH/s)/W and the 50(GH/s) SC will need about 300W.  Meaning each SC will need its own wall plug socket.  You couldn't run a load on a plug board it would not be safe.  I can not get extra plug sockets fitted in my apartment.  This operation is going to be too big to run out of just my apartment.  We need them in a data centre.  It'd be good in the long term if we could get them in a data centre in Iceland.  As all there electricity is renewable and very cheap.  Iceland also has good Internet laws from what I can gather is and is/was where the Wikileaks server run/ran.  Although as we grow using multiple different data centres would be best from a downtime and other problems point of view.

All investors ideas on the matter welcome.

It is fine and usual if you use same username. It also tests your 2FA and gives you confidence  Grin - now may be I can go and type a few random forum user names and creep them out  Wink j/k

Heh... Yeah. I do not have 2-factor on that wallet, though (it's just a "spending" wallet)... My question about 2-factor with blockchain: What happens if you lose your Yubikey and simultaneously blockchain.info disappears? They say somewhere in their FAQ that if you lose your Yubikey, you have to email them to get a "2 factor auth reset" or something, which sounds to me like you're dependent on either having your Yubikey, or Blockchain.info being alive and well. Personally, what I like about Blockchain is the convenience combined with NOT having to depend on them in any way. Seems like the 2-factor adds dependance. Is that correct?

The wallet can be recreated from the backups they send you without 2FA.  The 2FA is only on there website and not on the private keys they send you for backups.

879  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transferwise Stop Taking BTC Transfers on: April 24, 2013, 06:34:44 PM
I imagine there are very very easy ways around that.

For example, here in Germany, bitcoin.de does not yet have a bank account (though they just made a deal with a bank).
Now, when you sign up there, you have to register your bank account. They merely sent you .01 with a code attached. Get that and verify that code through their site - that activates your account.
Next, when you buy a bitcoin you receive the verified sellers account information. You send the money via SEPA or German transfer and mark it as paid (you have 12 hours to mark it).
When the money arrives, the seller marks it as such and the coins, which are locked in their account, are released into your account.

If England allows SEPA transfers to Germany, just sign up with bitcoin.de.

Now, I did have problems with this system. I sold 5 BTC's at 150 Euro and the price tanked shortly there after. The seller, decided not to pay and bitcoin.de automatically cancelled the transaction
after 24 hours. Not much I could do with a selfish crook like that. Anyway, I and probably others, complained and then they changed the confirmation time from 24 to 12 hours. These are just
growing pains. The idea of bitcoin.de getting the bank account will make transactions instantaneous (relatively speaking) and solve this problem.

Anyway, you see my point. If there is an exchange where you are not, per say, sending money to the exchange, but rather an individual, how the heck can a bank know that? Yes, there is more
worry, but by from experience sellers (which I forgot to check and my seller had only 1 star) and just don't buy all from the same person if you are unsure. But if the person has a pefect record, then all is usually good.

IAS

Yes the UK is part of the SEPA zone its just that all UK banks charge extortionate fees for sending or receiving SEPA transfers.

They may only be 21Million bitcoins but how many Satoshi's are they plus extra zeros can be added when needed.
