Sorry about that.

christ.  the nanny's are everywhere.  didn't youtube used to have an 18+ year-old channel for stuff like this?

lawyers and right-wing agenda pushers make the world so damn boring...

authoritarian.

centralized.

non-anonymous.

government IDs.

non-starter.

EDIT:  oh... and more complicated than my poor little pea-sized brain even wants to think about.
863  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 5870 = free beer on: May 11, 2011, 04:40:18 PM
This thread needs more discussion of what beer is best for drinking while mining.

"While" mining? Single malt whisky  Wink

pffft.  elitist.

i like my mining brew like my GPU card - overvolted and bubbly.

 Shocked
864  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: hashkill - testing bitcoin miner plugin on: May 11, 2011, 04:30:52 PM

I recently have been tweaking the clocks on my 5870 and using hashkill:

Code:
Speed: 382 MHash/sec [cur: 9%] [proc: 25926] [subm: 25089] [stale: 534] [eff: 96%]

:~$ aticonfig --od-setclocks=900,900 --adapter=all

Adapter 0 - ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series
            New Core Peak   : 900
            New Memory Peak : 900

and from lspci -v to show the card is really this:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: XFX Pine Group Inc. Device 2961

The speed is now around 380-390MH/s at 900MHz on the GPU and the memory clock down to 900MHz -- running fairly stable at around 82C and 99% busy :]

good speed, sarah_tonin (BTW, i'm glad your enterochromaffin cells are doing well).

if i might - what brand 5870, and what voltage are you running at?
865  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Practices using BTC/ Wallet Backup on: May 11, 2011, 07:51:38 AM
as far as i'm aware, the best and most durable/convenient method of archiving data that humans have yet devised is...  the LP record.

How long does an LP last? I'm aware of a data archiving method that can last for millennia (though it really should be copied after a few centuries), and it isn't vinyl records.

really?  what archiving method is that?  [that is accessible to we regular folks.  none of asimov's notched molecules, now...]

i have LPs that are pushing 80 years old, and they're still good.  decent vinyl lasts a *long* time.  with a laser turntable and appropriate software, damn near anything can be recovered.  the bass player from the grateful dead has been working on that stuff for years.

since my post, it's occurred to me that some kind of blending of nano-fiber and good old-fashioned computer punch tape might be a good candidate...

but seriously... millennia?  talk to any long-term archivist (which is *not* the subject under discussion:  we're talking about our own lifetimes, right?), and he/she will tell you that the big problem with archiving past 100 years is the playback technology, not the recording media.  we've got a metric crapton of data from the NASA moon landings that is essentially lost, because nobody remembers how to build the machines to play any of it back...
866  Other / Off-topic / Re: Microsoft confirms takeover of Skype on: May 11, 2011, 07:26:46 AM
what a bunch of crap.

i use skype on linux, and pay for a phone number.  had that number for four or five years.

not too much longer, i reckon.  microsquash doesn't do so well writing linux software - and i ain't had a MS software product on my iron since the NSA backdoor thing.

well, i'm glad it cost 'em 8.6 billion to get my cancellation e-mail, anyway.
867  Economy / Economics / Re: How can Bitcoin be used to promote ethnic diversity? on: May 11, 2011, 06:28:36 AM
bitcredit:  do you have ideas or suggestions?

I think a global currency like bitcoin will do a lot to promote understanding and diversity, but did you have something specific in mind?

i have an idea, gavin - if you will pardon my tiny voice...

i'm not convinced that, on a world-wide basis, race is anywhere near as important to Bitcoin as numbers.  and numbers are clear:  the vast majority of the world is poor.  that may be partly because of racism, but from a capitalist perspective that doesn't matter.  pure capitalism is color-blind.  so...

if we want acceptance, we therefore want numbers.  massive numbers.  micropayments is not so much the issue -  what about microloans?

have you approached kiva (http://www.kiva.org/ )?

has anybody?

they have a [claimed] 98.71% re-payment rate.  good business there.

maybe everybody on earth doesn't have a computer - but really, we'd like to get away from the mining paradigm anyway, wouldn't we?

tell you what though - damn near everybody on the planet has a phone...

there could be some serious money in those numbers.  and some even more serious acceptance...
868  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Practices using BTC/ Wallet Backup on: May 11, 2011, 05:21:34 AM
the unfortunate reality of digital backups is that they are all quite delicate.

CDRWs can lose data in as little as two years.  sending a file to a huge online presence is tempting - after all, AOL is immortal, right?

magnetic media?  well... there's magnets.

as far as i'm aware, the best and most durable/convenient method of archiving data that humans have yet devised is...  the LP record.

weird, isn't it?
869  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (180Ghash/s) on: May 11, 2011, 04:23:26 AM
i was putting one miner into slush's pool before the crash.  173 Mhash/sec.

now i've got two, better miners in his pool - 525 and 325 Mhash.  blocks are cracking, payment is going out, and all's well with the world.

those virgin blocks are getting tough.  still got my big miner going solo though.
870  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Speed of mining slows down without a monitor? on: May 10, 2011, 04:37:31 PM
if a computer mines on a rack, but there's no monitor to see it with, does it hash?
871  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Has anyone got any contacts at AMD? on: May 10, 2011, 05:01:51 AM
i don't see AMD devoting any kind of Machiavellian effort directed at Bitcoin.  let's face it - as i read on another thread here - it's less than 1% of just their GPU division revenue.

they've got bigger fish to fry.  and for my money, they do one helluva job at the grill.  i'm pretty much AMD all the way...

but furthermore, i don't think making an effort to educate AMD about Bitcoin and their place in it is really needed.  i guarantee they're well aware of us, and keeping up with this forum religiously.

hey!  you!  AMD guy!  if you need a hardware beta tester for your 8xxx-series GPU cards, PM me...
872  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: May 10, 2011, 04:52:00 AM
I just checked persistence and it works fine ? Are you formatting your USB drives using the instructions in the link and using the -L casper-rw flag ? Easiest way to do this (if your using windows and dont have linux installed) is to burn linuxcoin to a disk. split your USB drive into two partitions. make sure the primary partition is larger than the size of the ISO. Install linuxcoin to the first partition and boot into linuxcoin.

Next load up a shell in linux coin and determine what linuxcoin has listed your flash drive as.

Code:
dmesg | grep sd

NOTE: If you only have one hdd installed this will normally be /dev/sdb

Now lets create some swap space. Type this into xterm..

Code:
mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 -L casper-rw /dev/sd*2

* = device number

Reboot and your changes will save from now on.

actually, there's something worth trying here...

the latest version of Unetbootin has a little bit of new functionality.  if you burn the USB version of LinuxCoin using it, you have a checkbox option which reads:  "Space used to preserve files across reboots (Ubuntu only)"  followed by a size box that lets you set the MB of space you want to set aside on your USB drive for file storage.

i don't use Ubuntu - i use the Mint re-spin of Debian testing - but it works ok on that.  it'll probably work on any Debian derivative (like Ubuntu).

i dunno about an actual swap drive - haven't tried that yet...

that baby is *made* to be immersed in mineral oil.  8 cards with extenders...

wow!
874  Other / Meta / Re: Having a user rating system without feedback.... on: May 08, 2011, 03:01:34 PM
it doesn't matter.

there's dicks everywhere, but the point of a forum is to get to know people.

really, if the admins want a good feedback/moderation/self-policing system, they should take a hard look at DailyKos - it's the best system i've ever seen in twenty years on the 'net.
875  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (270Ghash/s) on: May 08, 2011, 02:23:59 PM
Slush's pool is up & down like a yoyo
I've had several hash's found but not showing as they got to the pool
I think he's under a serious attack

it looks that way, at this point.

damn - i like his pool.  i hope Tycho got in touch with him as was mentioned elsewhere, is providing assistance, and hardening the site is underway.  and perhaps slush will take Tycho's approach to heart: co-location in multiple national jurisdictions.

nothing to do but wait.
876  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: May 08, 2011, 05:55:03 AM
wow!

looks really amazing.
877  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: May 08, 2011, 02:58:46 AM
Thank you, I was just going to ask about those instructions.  Also the keyboard messed with me a little since I do not know how to change it, but with some hunting I found the right keys.

I am getting 141Mhash on my 5770 using poclbm now was 66 as I had it set up so thanks.  Pretty awesome!

you want to get AMDOverdriveCtrl.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/amdovdrvctrl/

i've got a (Sapphire) 5770 that does 173 Mhash/sec with Hashkill, 166 with DiabloMiner.  960GPU, 250Mem, 1.125 overvolt.  runs at 67-68C.
878  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (270Ghash/s) on: May 08, 2011, 02:09:44 AM
appears to be back up...
879  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (270Ghash/s) on: May 07, 2011, 11:44:07 PM
it's just a rolling re-boot or some kind of issue with slush's ISP.

nothing worth getting upset over - slush seems quite the pro, and if he judges that allocating his time to get stuff back up is more important than anything else right now i can't really disagree.
880  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: hashkill - testing bitcoin miner plugin on: May 07, 2011, 11:25:37 PM
Well hm...look for *.isa. /tmp should be writable, that's very strange.

maybe try it in one of the /hashkill subdirectories?

BTW, i tried running it as sudo - it said no such program as 'export'.

Opsss......I now see what's the problem. You don't need to run hashkill as root (via sudo). It is only needed for the installation (sudo ./install.sh). Once you are done, you just run hashkill-gpu. You can do export ....; sudo hashkill-gpu or sudo export ... ; sudo hashkill-gpu ... but the environment won't be preserved across those so you won't be getting the ISA dump. So you just have to drop that sudo thing. In fact I really don't recommend running hashkill as superuser - it does no matter at all as far as performance is related and it can run perfectly well without superuser privileges. I tend to minimize the set of root processes running on my system, kind of paranoia from days when I used to be a sysadmin. In fact, running as root can only lead to problems as the root user may not be allowed to make a connection to the X server (on my debian devel host for example I need to explicitly allow this with the xhost command).

sorry - i was unclear.  i should have said "i also tried running it as sudo..."

i've been running hashkill, and first tried running export, as user.  just can't get that blasted thing to work.  no .isa files anywhere on the hard drive.  weird indeed...

"export GPU_DUMP_DEVICE_KERNEL=3" - in /tmp, right?  11.3, 2.4, and AMDOverdriveCtrl profile loaded.  bitcoind not running.

i type it, hit enter, and it just feeds a line to another prompt - nothing happens.  i might as well have just hit enter.
