8601  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: How much bitcoins can you collect from faucets per day? on: October 16, 2014, 08:34:42 AM
Hello Everyone,

Have you tried claiming BTC from faucets?

Yes.

How many BTC can you collect from faucets per day?

I dont remember.

What faucets do you use?

I dont remember.

Is there a chance to reach 1 BTC at the end of 7 days collecting satoshis?

No. I am not 100% sure, but almost certainly not.

Please share your experiences and ideas.

Thank You

Faucets are a waste of time. I used them when I started with BTC and was happy about the 10k satoshi from faucets that paid the fees for other inputs I spend. But I never got big amounts via faucets. And actually its not even a good idea. See this [1] post. Someone got ~0.2 BTC from faucets, which sounds nice at first, but the thing with BTC is that you pay fees depending on the size of the Transaction (TX) the more inputs (coins someone send you) you use, the more space your TX needs and the higher the fees are. Faucets usually give you very little amounts per TX and will make it hard to spend those coins. You can try to fuse them with transactions without fees, but that might not work out. In the end you wasted a lot of time for very little and have some nasty problems on top of it.
If you spend the same time one a regular job (almost any job will pay better) you could not make 1 BTC in 7 days (assuming you have no special skills or education). On the other hand if you work 2-3 hours a day you will earn way more than you can via faucets.

tl;dr Faucets might seem like a nice way to earn something at first, but once you understand how a transaction works you understand that faucets are bad.

8602  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Possible to crack encrypted BTC wallet if you lose password? more questions too! on: October 15, 2014, 09:53:37 PM
-snip-
AFAIK it is not possible to determine the "balance" of your wallet.dat file without the password

Just start bitcoin core. Its not asking you for a password, yet shows your balance. Some with any other wallet.dat. But it wont let you spend any of the coins without the proper password.
8603  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Noob question about adding coin to wallet (I want to make sure I did this right) on: October 15, 2014, 09:44:42 PM
Will the seed get your private keys back too, or should you back those up too?

The seed is all you need when you backup electrum. All private keys derive from it, unless you import them from another source.
8604  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Blockchain on: October 15, 2014, 09:04:19 PM
I use Bitcoin Core, mainly because I didn't realise there was an alternative and I am probably too stupid (and old) to  use something like Electrum or Multibit.

Anyway, I hear that the blockchain is now 22GB and growing daily and takes around a full day to download. Why the hell would any new user use Bitcoin Core or bother to download the blockchain if it's not required and the big question:

I dont know about new users, I run full nodes (a bad one at home and a proper one on a VPS) to support the network.

What would happen if every single Bitcoin user switched from downloading the blockchain to software like Multibit?

Bitcoin can not work if every single person is using Multibit. Multibit needs full nodes to work, Miners are full nodes and big companies are advised to run full nodes (yes plural) to be able to judge transaction propagation.
The idea is actually in the original paper by Satoshi [1]

8605  Other / Meta / Re: Ban appeal on: October 15, 2014, 08:39:49 PM
Hello,
My account bitcoinforhelp got banned without reason given. I can't write or sent PW on forum, and i received ban appeal e-mail which looks strange. I sent appeal by email but no answer since days.
Couldn't understand why i got banned, so i started looking and i got here (Meta forum).
I saw in "Unnoficial rules thread" ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.0 ) that posting in offtopic short messages are forbidden.

Its not forbidden, but if the majority of your posts [1] is in off topic it does make one wonder why you are on a bitcoin board at all.
The other thing is that it took you apparently a little over 5 hours [2] for 161 posts. Thats 30 seconds per post, considering the time you have to wait as a newbie you can not have spend much thought on your posts.

This could be my offense. Didn't know that this is forbidden and i can promise i won't be using offtopic forum anymore, ever.
Can my ban be lifted?

Your first ban is usually temporary it should show a time when you login.

Disclaimer: I am neither Staff nor Mod nor Admin nor am I related to any of them, its just my personal opinion in an attempt to give you perspective.

8607  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoins sent to my account before sync finished on: October 15, 2014, 07:13:29 PM
where do I find my public address?

All addresses are public. File -> Receiving Addresses. Its the same address you provided when you had your BTC transfered.

can I spend bitcoins before wallet is finished sync?Huh

Nope. Well technically you can (export private key, import into slim client, spend coins) do this, but there is a lot that can go wrong. Its better to wait for the sync.

Greetings to all....
I am new to the "bitcoin" world so please forgive me for the simple questions I am about to ask!!
My situation is that I purchased a small amount of Bitcoins and had them transferred to a Bitcoin core wallet
But the wallet hasn't sync yet. Transaction not showing up in my wallet. Balance is $0.... Been 2 days now. What should I do??
Ive read different posts here about a torrent??? Where are they found and how do I use a torrent exactly??
Thanks for your patience with a "new fish"!!!

The torrent is here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=145386.0

but it will only work for the largest part of the way. For the last part you might want to add some good (fast, allways online) nodes to your list of peers.
To do this open bitcoin-core as usual Help -> Debug Window, select Console and write
addnode IP add
for each of the IPs in list below.
In the same Window under Network traffic you can see if the node you are currently syncing with provides data at a good rate or not.

8608  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Noob question about adding coin to wallet (I want to make sure I did this right) on: October 15, 2014, 06:20:26 PM
1. Download and run Electrum standalone
2. Memorize/Save seed
3. Send BTC to one of the four addresses under Receive tab > Main account > Receiving
4. Wait for BTC to reach wallet

Please tell me I didn't skip a step and just lost $50-worth of coin!

Nope, sounds good. Make sure you safe the seed properly. Probably best to safe it offline on paper or something similar. If safed digitally encrypt it.
8609  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: 12 BTC stolen 1 hour Ago.Session Hijacked?How is that possible? on: October 15, 2014, 02:41:07 PM
Really noob question: If Tor users are aware that the Tor network is always under surveillance by the government, how come most of the dark activities concealed by this not-so-hidden-network at all?

There's a difference between using tor to access the regular internet and using tor to access hidden services. Those are more difficult to wiretap.

This and I didnt claim that the users are aware of it. Just because someone from the project is aware about the situation does not mean every user is aware.
8610  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin transaction not confirmed after 19 hours on: October 15, 2014, 10:37:41 AM
bump

chill, a 30 minute bump is not needed.

Zero-fee transactions depend on the mercy of miners. If no one wants to include your transaction in a block, you can't do much about it.
I don't know the rules by heart, but in general a transaction should have either some miner fee, or it should consist of "old" coins, to be included preferentially. Your transaction has neither, so you'll have to wait and hope.

Onkel Paul

The Input is neither old (~1 day), nor big (0.0606), so this will take some time without a fee.

8611  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: 12 BTC stolen 1 hour Ago.Session Hijacked?How is that possible? on: October 15, 2014, 09:01:55 AM
Didn't know exit node can comprise a user identity.

Is this exploit being used by government also?

Yes [1] and Tor is aware of it [2].

tl;dr:

Quote
Tor is used by private individuals who want to conceal their online activity, human rights activists in oppressive regimes such as China and Iran, journalists who want to protect their sources, and even by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency in their efforts to infiltrate criminal groups without revealing their identity. The Tor Project is a non-profit charity based in Massachusetts and is primarily funded by government agencies. Thus it is ironic that the Tor Network has become such a high-priority target in the NSA's worldwide surveillance system.

Looks good [1] to me. Well if I wanted to nitpick Id say the address and the post should be part of the message.

I read somewhere that theymos has a leaky queue when it comes to PMs. I am not 100% sure but IIRC he said to resend messages after a few days without answer. Maybe improve the message (include post and address in the message) and try again. This topic is also a good start IMHO as all the admins and mods seem to read everything in the meta section even though they do not reply every time.

Other than that I can only imagine that you might have sold the account and it is not restored because of that. I am not accusing you here, its just that Ive seen it in the past and I can not rule it out. Admins have access to more data.

Round 3 of advertising in this thread has started! Click here to place your bet!

Gross Sad

I'm not visiting the front page of this thread anymore.  I'll still pop in to see about the last few pages to see if there's anything interesting going on that I missed.  But it's really easy to see what sig-ad campaigns are happening by simply looking at the "Services" board.  Too bad this has become some kind of commercial service.

There have been next to no donations, yet this is the go-to thread when you want to quickly check which signature campaigns are up. Sure you can "easily" check elsewhere, but do you see every thread?
This is a lot of work to keep updated and thread itself is -at least to me- very valueable. Somehow the majority here does seem to see this differently even though this thread is indirectly related to the payment they receive for their signature.

8615  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Cannot get any confirmations, or any nodes to connect on: October 14, 2014, 08:16:35 PM
which I find ridiculous as they charge 15% on site.

The transaction fee is ~0.0001 not 15%, so you need to read up on bitcoin.

The Service is question is charging 15%, OP just mentioned that they made a feeless TX. Which can work without flaw, since there are other rules e.g. age and size of the inputs [1] to determine the priority of a Transaction.

@OP There is nothing we can do. Contact support, if they are unable to get a fast solution consider using a different service.

My fault!!!

Another firewall I forgot about was interfering. Found it. Turned it off, and your app quickly recovered.

Sorry for the firedrill!

Glad its working Smiley
8618  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Nodes on: October 14, 2014, 07:29:52 AM
Is there any current community driven efforts to increase the number of Full nodes?

There are step by step guides for Ubuntu Servers [1], there is this person franky1 mentioned setting up a node for you for a monthly (at least thats what I remember) payment.

I personally however had the best experience with just doing it myself. Get a cheap VPS (>=2GB Ram and >=40GB HDD) and start. If you have questions just ask in the tech support section or if its not actually related to bitcoin ask in the board/irc channel/mailing list for the tool you need help with.

8619  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is stealing bitcoins illegal? on: October 13, 2014, 10:05:31 PM
I think this is covered by law in most countries regardless. In germany this would probably fall under §202a StGB the so called "Hacker paragraph". Its basically electronically trespassing. The law just requires that you are not allowed the access the information/data by me and I secured it/them in a reasonable way.
What if bitcoins are stolen without hack? For example "Random generator" bug(like was https://bitcoin.org/en/alert/2013-08-11-android )  or if two people use same phrase for generate bitcoin address via "brainwallet".

Not sure if "guessing the same seed for a brainwallet" counts as "overcome the accessrestriction". I am no lawyer but it think both of these would fall under "sucks to be you". Bugs are (assumed to be) not intentional and brainwallets that can easily be guess are no "accressrestriction".

Is there any known ruling about stolen bitcoin in any country?
8620  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is stealing bitcoins illegal? on: October 13, 2014, 08:32:17 PM

ahhhhhh gotcha.

so the question is if you have access via a private key to a spot on the blockchain, is the balance on that spot considered property?

It is technically true that you do not own bitcoin and in fact noone owns bitcoins. We are -in the terminology- just allowed to "play" with them because we "own" certain private keys.
The interesting (philosophical) question is whether someone can rightfully claim exclusive ownership over certain information.

Whether or not this would eventually end in front of a judge is something completely different.
