8621  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: I lost my Bitcoins by fishing attack "update electrum 4". on: August 09, 2020, 08:41:15 AM
HI EVERYONE: IN 04.08.2020. I WANT TO SEND 0.58BTC FROM MY ELECTRUM 3.** COLD WALLET TO ANOTHER ADDRESS: WHEN EVERYTHING WAS READY, I PUSHED THE BUTTON "SEND". BUT ELECTRUM 3.** ANSWER BY ERROR AND THE WINDOW THAT FOR TRANSACTION I MUST TO UPDATE UP TO ELECTRUM 4. I DO THAT AND THE VIRUS THAT I GOT, CHANGED  MY BTC ADDRESS OT ANOTHER ONE - NOT MINE

1. Writing all uppercase means you are yelling at us. Maybe you should consider writing normally.
2. Beware, you seem to misunderstand what cold storage means. Cold storage means a computer that's always (and always) offline. It's used to sign transactions, and those transactions will be broadcasted online by another computer. (So in a correct cold storage you would not be able to update since you are offline).

Sorry for your loss though.

Should I submit all 12 words? It's just that nobody ever asked me. My question may be weird but I was expecting another kind of answer

No, don't send. The request is weird indeed, it's good that you noticed. Most likely you found a scammer, a blockchain.info impersonator. BTW, the website is blockchain.com now.
But you opened 2 topics on this same problem, please close this one and continue the discussion in the original topic.

In other words, at a block height roughly 86 years into the future, it will be impossible to produce any new blocks.

Then let the people discuss about this in some 80-85 years from now.
Until then there are plenty other important changes / improvements to be made for a better Bitcoin.

If newspapers bring up this problem because they don't have anything better to write about, should we really do the same?!
8624  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which GOLD backed coin/token do you think the best? on: August 08, 2020, 08:08:19 PM
None? Why? Because by far the best is to buy gold and store it at home. That way you have it and nothing can happen to that gold. This centralised gold backed tokens can be abandoned. Gold that is backed can be stolen. Owners of those tokens can bankrupt. Owners of those tokens can simply steal all gold and vanish.

Why would anyone risk all that if he can simply buy gold and store it?

Buying gold and storing it poses some risks too, from the obvious part that the gold can easier be stolen from you to the pure convenience. A GOLD based coin or token can be easier acquired, can be easier sold and you don't have to bother with the storage. And, instead of the actual gold, this goes anonymously and doesn't attract attention.

But indeed, you are correct, in the case of any stable coin you need to trust the issuer won't just go away with the money (in this case the actual gold).

For such an endeavor - make a business based on physically backed coin/token - there are 2 ways to earn money:
* sell the token to enough people and run with the money (and hide from the law afterwards)
* make it a clean business, earn from the fees and grow the business in time

The ones I advertise look good and seem to go as a clean business. They are more than one year old already and the fact the quantity of actual gold (stored in a 3rd party vault) can easily be checked gives (at least gives me) quite a lot of confidence they do the things right.
8625  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Sending BTC as a gift to someone who doesn't have a wallet on: August 07, 2020, 03:26:51 PM
Is this the best way to give sats to someone, or are there better ways to do that?

No. Sending by email is an awful option. Also some may find difficult to work with private keys.
mk4 idea great if your friend wants to install a wallet right now. Then you can stop reading my post. Else...I have 2 other options:

If you want to really just send one private key and it's supposed to be a gift for long time hold, I advise you send something physical, like the chips from this raffle https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5267152.0 (there are surely many other examples too, just make sure you get from a very trusted seller) and after the physical object has arrived to your friend, you can fund the object if it's unfunded. The idea behind this kind of gifts is that one has to "break the seal" in order to access the private key and spend (the address is freely visible obviously).

Another option is a seed. That's 24 English words and it's easier to "give". Download Ian Coleman tool, https://github.com/iancoleman/bip39 generate a seed, test it too so you can also write down one or more addresses to fund, then you can just give her the seed via a phone call (preferably encrypted call with something like Whatsapp). Of course she has to write down the seed to a piece of paper (and keep it safe and offline).

8626  Other / Meta / Re: Make this forum a better place - part 1 on: August 07, 2020, 10:09:18 AM
Nice but i think this code works fine.
Code:
[img width=xxx height=xxx alt=image loading...]*link[/img]

From what I know this only shows the image smaller, it doesn't make people download less data.

And I agree with OP. In some cases there are too many too big images, even for a computer. Just this don't happen too often, especially in the areas I use to read/post.

Thank you!
In case I win, I don't mind if it even remains unfunded. It's still a great prize.

I see nice intentions here, but I also see a bit too big words. It could be a good project, it also can easily be just another failure.
I didn't fully read everything, I've just spent a few minutes on it.

For example I've see the pool has online wallet. I don't like online wallets and I also don't like full nodes. I prefer SPV wallets. Any of those available?
I may try to mine this a little, just to make sure I won't regret it in 5 years, but no promises.

I'd like to see a proper ANN and a link to an official (not web) wallet.
8629  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: August 07, 2020, 07:17:46 AM
To be honest, I would rather use it because it has good privacy futures, regardless of what the price is lol

It's not bad to do it for both. It's nice to have something valuable in your pockets, something with value increasing day by day and nobody knows (unless you really want to show them) how much you actually HOLD.

If that's the goal, it's obvious that BTC's the crypto to hold rn as it's outperforming everything.  But the moment it plateau's and holders start to get iffy with their bags, that's when they start dabbling with alts...

Actually in the last ~3 months Monero did outperform Bitcoin. It grew from ~0.062 to ~0.08 and I expect to continue this trend and recover all it has lost since 2017-2018 (on XMR-BTC I mean).

8631  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Tokens (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] GOLD - First 100% Liquid Stablecoin Backed by Gold on: August 06, 2020, 11:31:08 AM
the price of gold is currently going up, I want to see if the price of this token also goes up like the price of gold, I still have a deeper look at this project and whether it continues to be stable coin

You can easily look at https://gold.storage/en/market just make sure you change to USD instead of BTC.
And you can compare with https://goldprice.org/ or any official chart - just make sure you use gram as measure unit.

If want to invest into this project better option always choose fiat instead of buy with BTC.

FYI, this makes no sense. It's like telling that people who want to invest should buy for USD, not for EURO. And I also don't think that you can (for now) buy GOLD token directly with fiat.
8632  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is this stolen? on: August 06, 2020, 09:46:24 AM
I always believed that when you chose your passcode, this effectively became the 25th seed word

No, the PIN is only for the physical access to the hardware wallet. Else they would have asked you also backup that on the card.
The backup card is there so anything happens, from the Ledger getting destroyed and Ledger company getting bankrupt to you losing all your memories, you or somebody from your family can access the money.
8633  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is this stolen? on: August 06, 2020, 09:26:48 AM
I think I have solved it, but it still confuses me a lot.
When I first got this ledger, I have now remembered that I saved a photo of the seeds to my secure folder(mistake #1). I think there must be some malware on the phone, because I have never entered my seeds onto my computer or anywhere else and I don't ever remember opening the image. They must have gotten the 4 digit passcode from monitoring my phone when I used it with other apps, for example some apps are unlocked with the same 4 digit code I use to unlock my ledger(mistake #2). This is the only way I can see that they have accessed it. I've run anti virus etc on there but it's found nothing. I also checked all the installed apps and there is nothing strange here. In fact this phone is rarely used and only really for whatsapp and google authenticator. For this to be true, it would mean someone has had access to my phone for over a month which is very worrying

Physically, the seeds are hidden in my house. I live alone and no one else has access, certainly no one I know knows my passcode or understands bitcoin, or even knows I own a ledger.

$5000 is a nice expensive lesson in security I guess. Thanks all for any replies and help Smiley I'm off to buy a new phone

Ouch! Quite expensive indeed.
Your logic has some mistakes. As soon as anyone had access to your seed, they don't need your pin or anything: with the seed they can re-create the wallet on any other computer or smartphone, or ledger or ... (other options may exist).
The wallet doesn't contain the coins, it only handles the private keys (simplified explanation) and the private keys are based on your seed.
The private keys are the most important thing: they are the only thing that allows spending the coins.

So whoever got your seed, it was all he needed to steal your money. (meaning that mistake #1 was more than enough)

8635  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger wallet App Isolation Bypass Alert on: August 05, 2020, 05:31:17 PM
Actually Ledger folks seem to have made a fix.
I've just read this:

The Bitcoin app that fixes the issue in Bitcoin derivative apps is available -- for Nano X and Nano S. You can update your app on Ledger Live now.

On Twitter there are more linked posts there.

I WANT 12345.67 1234567.89 SOON!

Here, corrected it for you...

So this is how the 75% greed looks like today.
I'd be scared of how it'll look when it'll go higher.
8637  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger wallet App Isolation Bypass Alert on: August 05, 2020, 02:02:29 PM
It's not just the Nano X, all models have the same vulnerability

My point was that if you don't use it for altcoins you can simply just buy the cheaper Nano S or the cheapest Trezor.
But you're right, I was not clear enough on that.

Of course that the wallet has to be malicious, but we already had a good share of such wallets exactly for "cashing in" various Bitcoin hard forks.
8638  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger wallet App Isolation Bypass Alert on: August 05, 2020, 11:59:39 AM
What is easy solution for regular users?
- Avoid using any altcoin apps in Ledger walet.

Aaaand this pretty much makes Ledger Nano X no longer worth buying.

Although I'd add something else too:

What is easy solution for regular users?
- Keep on daily use hardware wallets only the funds you use often (and keep the HODL funds separately).
