Bhola cyclone 1970:- The Bhola cyclone that struck the Bengal Coast in 1970 was the deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded, wiping out entire villages and killing as many as half a million people. The government at the time was criticized for failing to handle relief efforts and protests led to its defeat in the national elections a month later.

883  Other / Politics & Society / Bergdahl prisoner swap? on: June 18, 2014, 01:46:28 PM
So what do you guys think about the exchange of U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for 5 high-level Taliban prisoners by the US government?

http://edition.cnn.com/2014/05/31/us/ber...le_sidebar

In an embarrassing incident for the US gov, U.S sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was later found to be a deserter who was caught while running away.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world.../10380147/

I thought US also said they will not negotiate with terrorists? Is this move right or wrong?
884  Economy / Economics / Re: Good business/economy books! on: June 18, 2014, 01:16:32 PM
You can also try "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" by Michael Lewis is really a good business economy book. This is the no 1 New York Times bestseller.
This is the first book I've read by Michael Lewis, and I hope to read his other work. The book was incredibly informative and fast paced, but also managed to be highly entertaining. I laughed out loud at parts, became darkly angry during other parts, and by the end felt quite informed about elements of the housing collapse. I highly recommend this book
I found the book repetitious. He tells the same story from three different points of view, even though it was the same story. The first and last part of the book were very informative, the middle could have been skipped and the book would have accomplished the same. There are also good lessons to be learned. Do not invest in thing you do not understand and do your homework when you hire an investment manager.
885  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Iran actress scandal?? on: June 17, 2014, 06:09:22 PM
An Iranian actress, Leila Hatami who starred in the Oscar-winning fim "A Separation" angered religious authorities after she kissed the cheek of the president of Cannes Film Festival, Gilles Jacob and now she faces a call that she be publicly flogged by various groups in her country.

After the controversial kiss on the cheek, many hardline media outlets in Iran used the headlines "Leila Hatami kisses a strange man" to accompany the pictures to the dissaproval of hard line media and conservative political parties in her country.

A few days later, a group of female Iranian students wrote to Tehran’s minister of culture and media, Al Jannati. “We ask actress Leila Hatami be sentenced to one to ten years imprisonment and flogging,” the petition read. “We refer you to article 638 of Islamic Penal Code, which deems punishment for those who commit a sin in public. Leila Hatami, who is a beloved public personality in our Islamic nation, did not observe the proper Islamic attire and intentionally, and with full knowledge of her actions, volunteered to kiss a foreign non-Muslim man.” The group signed the petition the “Student Sisters of Hezbollah.”

What do you guys think of this? Massive over reaction or do the Iranians have the right to enforce moral codes unto artists who represent their country?

Do consider both sides of the argument.
What is actually shocking is that the cal to have this actress sentenced and flogged came from women! Is that not scary? I have to ask what is the state of women's rights in Iran? I have met a few Iranian women in Europe who told me just how free they feel in living in Europe. They often dread going back home on visits.
They is certainly very enlightening to know the point of view of Iranian women living in Europe. I do hope they get Citizenship status so they don't have to go back and be oppressed by the government in their country. Sad

Countries like Iran need more liberal minded leaders so that women rights can be recognized and more liberty be given to them. I don't get why women are treated so harshly in those countries. Is it because of their religion??
886  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Iran actress scandal?? on: June 17, 2014, 05:24:16 PM
This kind of thing disgusts me. There will always be religious extremism in every country, just like how there is the Westboro baptist church in the U.S

The messed up thing is that in some countries, those people are actually in power. But majority of Iranians are not like that. Many of the Iranian friends I know online are quite moderate and open.

They too, are saddened by how the image of their country has been painted as a haven for radical religious extremists who try to tell women what they can or cannot do.
887  Other / Politics & Society / Re: GOP: Obama's Failed Economy after 5 Years on: June 17, 2014, 03:59:14 PM
http://onpolitics.usatoday.com/2014/02/17/gop-commemorates-five-years-of-failed-stimulus/

The GOP, the right, and most of the other Obama haters keep claiming that after 5 1/2 years, Obama is the one responsible for our less than great economy. They claim that any excuses do not matter, because the 5 1/2 years has been more than enough to fix everything with the right plans.
I can only point out that if a long time as president is the only factor we need to consider in evaluating a president's performance, then Obama cannot yet be considered our worst president on the economy. Bush II had 8 years to give us a great economy. How were things after his 8 years? Let's see how it compares after Obama's 8 years.

To be clear, I believe a president cannot be judged solely by how things are going after X number of years. You need to consider the entire hand he was dealt. At a minimum, one must recognize that economies do have cycles, some with bigger swings than others.

Obamacare has proved so disastrous to President Barack Obama that he’s going to begin the New Year by shooting political nails into his head.

He’ll try to distract the public from his painful Obamacare takeover by doing something even more painful — showing how he has mismanaged the economy and left 20 million Americans unemployed or underemployed amid a Wall Street boom.

Of course, in the run-up to the 2014 election, he’ll try to blame his mismanagement on the GOP’s post-2010, partly-effective opposition to his post-2008 regulations and policies.

The daring “you’re-responsible-for-my-failed-policies” strategy, however, depends utterly on cooperation from the establishment media. So it is being pitched as a noble campaign against unfairness, or “economic inequality.”

“I believe this is the defining challenge of our time,” Obama declared in a December speech, which was delivered while Obamcare sank his poll ratings below 40 percent. “It drives everything I do in this office,” he announced Dec. 4, two week before he jetted off for a two week golfing vacation in Hawaii.

“There is no greater challenge this country has than income inequality, and we must do something about it,” Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid also said in December.

The “something” Obama and Reid are offering consists of two small steps.

The first supposed fix is an $25 billion extension of unemployment benefits for people who have been jobless for at lest six months. The second supposed fix is a boost in the national minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour.

Obama doesn’t have much else to distract Americans before they go to the polls and — if current polls were to hold steady — elect GOP majorities in the House and the Senate.

Obamacare has delivered commercial health-care policies to 2 million customers out of a population of 310 million, but also cancelled policies held by 5 million Americans. The network is expected to spur more public opposition in 2014 as Americans recognize the limits on their increasingly expensive Obama-approved insurance policies.

Foreign policy doesn’t bear mentioning. Al-Qaida is overrunning cities in Iraq that were guarded until Obama pulled U.S. forces out a more peaceful Iraq in 2010. The Arab world is sucked into the merciless civil war in Syria, and the supposed nuclear deal with Iran has stalled.

Immigration policies could spur increased Latino turnout if Democrats can paint the GOP as racist for opposing the Senate’s very unpopular immigration bill that would double the inflow of immigrants and guest workers into a stalled economy.

But economic inequality is also a tough sell when Obama has been in the White House for five years, and the Democrats have controlled the Senate on each and every day of his tenure.

He’s overseen the “Quantitative Easing” policy that spiked Wall Street stocks owned by wealthy Americans, and touted the various economic and immigration policies that have frozen poorer Americans’ income.

“Top 1 percent incomes grew by 31.4 percent while bottom 99 percent incomes grew only by 0.4 percent from 2009 to 2012,” said a September report by Emmanuel Saez, a left-wing economist at the University of California’s Berkeley campus.

Obama has simply done nothing but increase our federal spending each year which is digging into our pockets. He gives free 'paychecks' to any American who can fake a broken arm, and everyone who has paid their social security are receiving the same amounts of someone who has done nothing but pass a naturalization test.

Didn't work out too well for us in Vietnam, nor did it work out for the French in Algeria and Chad; are you really naive enough to think that it would work out that way in Afghanistan if we just tried it one more time?

I think it was a concentrated effort to brainwash a generation in order to maximize profit. Therefore, corporations can and should be held accountable, especially for targeting children. I'm not talking about the "Mad Men" age of advertising where a solid product was backed by a creative marketing campaign. It almost seems like it is now done in reverse? First, target the specific demographic, then figure out how to manipulate market, only to finally throw together a crappy product. Just my opinion..

Barack Obama has executed a whole lot of tasks.. However, the best of the lot is the killing of terrorist Osama Bin Laden and the end of war in Iraq.
That’s not true , he didn’t kill Osama Bin Laden , SWAT and FBI team did that , but yes that happened when he came to the office . But what you think about starting this war with Libya ? Is it the same like with Iraq just few miles difference same goal same oil same shits happening .
If you don’t know much about Obama that’s not the reason to make him look bad . He did some good things really take a look . and then judge ! But if you are president some people are going to like you some are not . That’s normal fact !

Proof you can please only some people some of times .

I didn’t say only bad things . I would give him credits for that Improving the Economy, Preventing Depression and in fields of Wall Street reforms that he made . I can agree on that civil rights and anti-discrimination improvements that he made .

But as you said you can please only some people some of times . I don’t like Obama that's my opinion Smiley
According to a 2012 poll conducted by Gallup, a company famous for the integrity of their public opinion polls, 54% of Libyans approve of U.S. leadership, compared to only 22% and 19% respective approval for China and Russia's, and 75% of Libyans say they approved of NATO's military intervention in the civil war.

Well, what did you expect? Gaddafi was brutally oppressing his own citizens and killing the rebels and anyone who dares to speak against him en mass. His was an authoritarian dictatorship where ordinary citizens like you and I do not have a voice in what happens to us, our family and our neighbors.

Are you saying that such a leader should not be overthrown?
Yes u are right I agree with you totally , every country must be democratic ! Gaddafi was dictator just like Hitler or Stalin or any other dictators who need to be overthrown for good of all people of that region .

Every man deserve the have human rights and freedom in any way this rights are based on Geneva convention human rights . If you don’t agree with basic human rights than you don’t deserve to lead one country !
I did not say I agree with dictator and autocrat as Gaddafi is , I’m saying that U.S government are doing some other things intended they should do . They just put their fingers on every "cake" ... u know like there in Libya people don’t like Gaddafi but Libya got oil , a lot of oil , and we are not in good relationship with Russia ok lets "help" to the people on Libya , let them accept us our leaders and than we are going to take all we want from that country , just like we did to Iraq or Vietnam or and other region that we conflicted with . Bush did that Obama is doing that .

While respecting his family's right to privacy, I do feel that the information released to his fans is somewhat lacking in any meaningful detail. The statements usually leave more questions unanswered than anything else.

897  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Lack of Major Wars May Be Hurting Economic Growth on: June 14, 2014, 01:07:31 PM
Basically, war gives the government an excuse for raising wages which is what leads to economic growth, at least in terms of rising living standards. Of course, the elites have to feel threatened enough or at least bribed enough to play along, at least for the duration. To be effective, the war has to require a fair bit of industrial production and large enough armies and long enough duration to have an impact on the workforce, which is why our most recent small scale wars have had little or negative impact.

899  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Let's face it -- just because you CAN have children doesn't mean you SHOULD. on: June 13, 2014, 05:11:18 PM
This is what \happens when people make babies with different women, men, etc, move on with their lives when the last relationship doesn't work out and make new kids with the new boyfriend/girlfriend. There are consequences to being selfish and putting your kids way behind the next phase of your "love life." So a child of 6 gets chained to a bed with new girlfriend and more kids living there. Who knows who mom is or if she is fit to care for the kid..... you right ,just because you CAN have children doesn't mean you SHOULD.
You need a license to drive a car, but not to have a child. There is so much of this disgusting abuse I am so sickened by it. Chain this man up and let the other prisoners know he is in for child abuse.
