[...] Mintpal was in control of 30% of existing VeriCoin, all of which maybe was stolen by a yet unidentified hacker. [...]

fixed it for you
882  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNO] Unobtanium Info & Discussion - Update Now to 0.9.5 wallet on: July 15, 2014, 01:34:18 AM
It seems a lot of Uno has flowed out of Cryptsy & MP past couple of days. Buy/sell orders are very, very thin. I'm expecting big volatility as a result.

which isn't a problem at all. Wink

edit: lol. they are dumping on us again. Now is cheap!
883  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNO] Unobtanium Info & Discussion - Update Now to 0.9.5 wallet on: July 15, 2014, 01:08:01 AM
Oh wait! Sorry for writing so big. I see my own wallet listed as cryptsy-wallet, so the tool is not working. So there are probably less than 25% at cryptsy. Good to know the tool is off. Probably quite a bit actually. The tool lists what was bought at cryptsy. So 25% went through. Puh! And i thought it was accurate. Hope the community doesn't store more than a few percent there.
Ok, sorry for being alarmist. But still hear the warning and don't leave more than what you trade at the exchange. Thank you.

(I'll leave the comments up as a reminder)
884  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNO] Unobtanium Info & Discussion - Update Now to 0.9.5 wallet on: July 15, 2014, 12:49:00 AM
these are the wallets at cryptsy:
http://chainz.cryptoid.info/uno/wallet.dws?20630.htm

all those people with more than 300 UN need to withdraw most of their coins from exchange asap in their own best interest! Please do that.

i think people don't see the relation. This is not a coin where there are Millions of it around. 100Un is a decent chunk already. There are only 188.000 in circulation. Please withdraw the coins you are not trading at the moment. You can send them back any time. The client syncs up very fast. It is no hassle to keep the chain up to date. 7 days of chain are downloaded in less than 15 minutes. Just open your wallet once or twice a month and you are synced up in no time when you need it. Uno syncs very fast. No need to keep all the coins at exchange.
885  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNO] Unobtanium Info & Discussion - Update Now to 0.9.5 wallet on: July 15, 2014, 12:07:31 AM
how about you people take that 25% of all Uno out of cryptsy and into your local wallets? Do you really want to put the fate of the coin into the hands of one single entity? Do you want to risk to loose it all? What does it take for you to learn your lesson? Your coins are not safe at the exchange. How many hacks and losses does it need for you to learn your lesson? Can you please learn from vericoin, mintpal, gox, coinex, coinmarket, cryptorush ... ? Do you not have 300MB on your HD for a blockchain to secure your money? Where lies the problem with that? You don't own the coins at the exchange. You only really own the coins in your local wallet. Get that!  You can wake up tomorrow and all your money is gone. Move those coins off the exchange! Go download the wallet from the op, ask for help if you can't get it to run, make a backup of your wallet to an usb-drive and all is fine. There is no problem with that. Ask for help if you need it but move the coins off exchange!

the "hack" is a lie
887  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mintpal hacked (VeriCoin) on: July 13, 2014, 11:01:58 PM
Quote
1) We lost a considerable amount of VeriCoin in the attack, however we have been working with the VRC developers and all major exchanges to hard fork the coin at a position before the attack. This will allow us to retrieve the stolen coins and facilitate all withdrawals. We are also working with various exchanges to accommodate any losses they may encouter as a result of the required fork.

This is a problem right here. Just because it's stolen does not mean they should be able to arbitrarily reverse the hack. If they're successful at hard forking, this will set precedence that any time there is a theft reported, devs can just hard fork again. This will eventually be abused, and corruption happens.

True on the bright side at least it was not the Bitcoin accounts that got broken into
Always scary when an exchange gets hacked

we don't know that yet. On vrc-thread people say ltc and btc was touched by the hack too.
888  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNO] Unobtanium Info & Discussion - Update Now to 0.9.5 wallet on: July 13, 2014, 10:59:59 PM

there is some truth in that

I just want to know why they targeted only VRC...

because we are not told the full story
890  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: 51% of staking poscoins at exchange. Coin is dead. on: July 13, 2014, 10:29:26 PM
Isn't double spend when someone has 51% of the hashpower?

Why no one say or question about 51% attacks by someone having 51%OF THE COINS?

that's what we are talking about - in fact you need less than 51%
and the exchange has them

Any links explaining about this attack? Never heard about it.

Is bitcoin vulnerable too?

search the forum. You find many discussions about vulnerabilities of pos.
No, btc and pow-coins not affected.

I wish I had time for a long post, but I can't right now.

My gut reaction is that this MP thing is a beta test for forking BTC in the future.  That would imply this is a test of power.  Like Antonopolis seems to suggest - BTC has been going dark, as in obscurred transparency.

Just off-the-cuff remarks.  Hopefully, I'll get to write a longer explanation of this comment later, today, and I should copy it to maybe some MP thread.  Anyone got a link to the appropriate forum thread?

developement in vrc-thread is also interesting (from page 396):

893  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: 51% of staking poscoins at exchange. Coin is dead. on: July 13, 2014, 07:07:59 PM
It's no doubt a possibility but if an exchange does instigate double spends, then it would only be shooting itself in the foot. They'd lose out on potential revenue if trading a coin that is compromised and if their actions were discovered, it would be game over for their entire business as no nobody would trust them.

It's only likely to happen with smaller coins and a lot of newer PoS coins have automatic checkpointing set up which is a counter measure to this kind of attack, although this doesn't rule out the possibility.

i would have thought about a scenario too, where the exchange keeps operating like normal and maybe years after they closed down carry out the attack, when the coin was adopted by the masses already and could carry marketcap in the billions potentially.  Shocked

That's a good reason to say: pos is not fit for massadoption right now. It works maybe for smaller marketcap, but multibillion-dollar-cap is too high risk.

note: i am holding myself pos-coins right now

this just came to my mind when reading the vericointhread today

i don't buy mintpals story at all
895  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / 51% of staking pos-coins at exchange = Coin is dead on: July 13, 2014, 06:44:52 PM
If exchanges stake and have most of the pos-coins with them they can fork the coin later on.
So pos-coins that have been concentrated at one large exchange and have been staking there are done. The coin is then at the whim of the employees of that exchange since they can doublespent all they want at any point in the future.
Imagine this went on in silence, the coin gets adopted by the masses and they carry out the attack years later. WHAT A MESS!
896  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [UNO] Unobtanium Info & Discussion - Update Now to 0.9.5 wallet on: July 13, 2014, 06:05:49 PM
cryptsy higher than mintpal. Haven't seen that in a while.
I think 200 confirms has taken the mojo out of MintPal.

Cryptsy will run away with the Uno market if MP doesn't address this. No one, including me, wants to wait 10 hours for a deposit to clear - it just takes the fun out of it. I contacted them again today, asking for reconsideration.

NOW
Mintpal may want to insist on 10 hours for a withdraw to clear.

Or just fork all the chains  Shocked

what if mintpal doesn't tell the truth? Is it allowed to ask this question? What just happend on mintpal will make some waves for sure. Popcorn ready.

edit: if it turns out vericoin wasn't the target but mintpal itself it is totally unjustified to make a rollback. I would vote against that. They are responsible for their security. If they can't handle that then they should not operate. They can not repeat this.

edit: does mintpal pull a coinex? They had a bankrun after adding isiscoin. Then they claimed to not find blocks of btc-chain (look at their twitter). I mean: wtf? ... then they went into maintenance and then were hacked. I smell fish.

At first the word was 'vericoin' - then users asked question and then it was "vericoin, btc and ltc"- so why do they only tweet vericoin? And what has it to do with vrc? Why can't they say: "we were hacked and roll back the chain of vrc because we can"

man, man. Mintpal. If they can't take care about security they are out of buisiness. Can't fork all the coins because they lack security. Hotwallet/Coldwallet anyone?

also interesting he didn't go after DRK or BC

Seriously, i don't buy their story.
897  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mintpal hacked (VeriCoin) on: July 13, 2014, 05:53:38 PM
mintpal doesn't give info what the "attack" exactly was. How were funds stolen? Their hotwallet? A 51%-attack/doublespent? We don't get that info. All we know is: mintpal claims to have been "attacked" and there will be a rollback.
If the story of the attack is true or not or what exactly happend: we don't know.

This is a problem right here. Just because it's stolen does not mean they should be able to arbitrarily reverse the hack. If they're successful at hard forking, this will set precedence that any time there is a theft reported, devs can just hard fork again. This will eventually be abused, and corruption happens.

+1

just their hotwallet hacked doesn't justify a rollback. They should eat that bill and care about security. An attack on the coin itself? Where is the info? I am not satisfied with the info we are getting here!
