881  Economy / Economics / What is the best strategy for a someone who is both a believer and a bear? on: November 22, 2011, 06:14:37 PM
I am a new convert to the belief that Bitcoin is a good idea, but I also think the price of Bitcoins are still 50% to 80% hype and are going to continue coming down.  So my dilemma is that I want to sell some items and convert a little money into Bitcoin to use, but I am worried about all the value I will be losing over the next year.

So, what I have been doing is selling my stuff for coin but then converting most of it to USD on BTC-E.com and leaving it there until I need it.  Then if I run out of BTC I can easily convert my USD store there into BTC at what is likely to be a lower price.  This strategy has already saved me a few bucks.

So I guess my questions are:

Is there a better site I can use for the above strategy?(less fees, more trustworth, etc.)

Is some other strategies I can use to be involved in Bitcion, but not lose value as the price sinks?

Disclaimer:  I know there are many bulls out there, I am not trying to argue.  I just looking for how you would proceded if you felt as I do.

882  Economy / Speculation / Re: How fast will bitcoin recover? on: November 22, 2011, 03:10:39 PM
I know I am late to the party and while I agree with most of what you are all saying.  I think the most likely outlook for the next few years is a slow price drop back to sub $1 range, may be not for 1 year are so due to bulls jumping in thinking we are at bottom also there may be some small rallys due to news coverage.  However,  If no major outside investors come-in, and they likely won't, the price will push the GPU farms out some time in 2012 to 2013, after that I hope Bitcoin will slowly mature and raise in true value, but it could just as easy become a fad that die out or even get replaced but a kinda of Bitcoin 2.0 that has better features. All I know is the price is headed lower for a while,,,,,, barring some rich crazy person.
883  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin sell-off rhythm on: November 22, 2011, 12:49:02 PM
I do not know about this rhythm, but the capability of the human mind to see patterns in everything is amazing  Smiley
This is what is going on.  The fact is that Bitcoin has not been around long enough for any real cycles to play out.  Right now I feel we are still in the long tail of the summer bubble.  Also, the bitcoin market is so small that one semi-rich person can complete change the market and so could a few miners if they decide to dump.

To be honest, no one can guess weather bitcoin is going to be at $10 or $1 by the the end of the year, unless they actively force the change with there own pocket book.
884  Economy / Speculation / Re: Where is the BTCUSD average between 11/21 & 12/20? on: November 22, 2011, 12:46:17 AM

2.28 USD/BTC

I am kinda confused.  I run the Minerd.  I don't even remember where I downloaded it from.  I run a AMD Phenom 8400 Triple-Core 2.10 GHz and I run 3 threads.  I get about 3.5 Khashes.  Is there a software way to increase my hashes?

892  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Litecoin - a lite version of Bitcoin. Launched! on: November 17, 2011, 11:34:24 PM
Litecoin version 0.5.0.5 has been released.
- added minimum fee of 0.1 LTC for low priority transactions to deter transaction spam

0.1 seems a bit high, Why not 0.01, that would be high enough to kill the spam.

Bitcoin fee is 0.0005 btc, which is $0.0011 at today's prices.
At 0.1 ltc fee, which is 0.00063 or $0.0014 at today's prices.

I think that's about right. As ltc prices rise, I will readjust the fees as necessary.

Well how about 0.05.  The reason I like lite coin is because it is the silver to Bitcoins gold.  How can that be if transfer cost is more 25% on the cheaper coin.

896  Other / Beginners & Help / Questions about selling items for BTC on: November 15, 2011, 01:58:24 AM
I have some Steam games and items I would like to sell for BTC or LTC.  I am new to the whole Bitcoin seen so I have no reputation so to be trusted.
So how can I sell items so that my buyer knows they are safe?

Also, is there a place where the TF2 and steam community goes to trade in BTC?

Oh, last question, So you think I could sell Minethings gold without roughing anyone feathers?
897  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: smart hostile takeover on: November 14, 2011, 10:18:59 PM
Lets assume you are a paid agent for one of the near monopoly power payment providers like MasterCard or visa:

How would you use lets say 5 million$ that the company has given you to destroy our communitys trust in bitcoin systematically?

If I had only $5 million, I wouldn't attack the currency directly. That's not enough money to do a successful attack. What I *would* do is use that $5 million to assemble a team of the best malware writers in the world and attack the shit of out the Bitcoin community. I'd write viruses that co-opt computers for mining, steal bitcoins, etc. It's much easier (and cheaper) to undermine the *legitimacy* of the currency and destroy it that way than it is to attack the technology itself.

TMA
This

Or create a new currency with corporte backing and a large ad campane.

Or research and find a way to counter fit bitcoins.
