881  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Problems Communicating With Bitcoin RPC - Troubleshooting? on: April 18, 2011, 10:32:48 PM
I have a bitcoin server and a bitcoin miner (GUI version of poclbm) running on Windows 7 64 bit. This computer is behind a router and port 8332 is forwarded to this machine. It's internal IP address is 192.168.0.195

I have a bitcoin miner running on Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. This computer is behind the same router as the windows server+miner above.

Whenever I go to run the poclbm miner from Ubuntu using variations of -o localhost, 192.168.0.195, my_router_ip, etc... I get the error message "Problems Communicating With Bitcoin RPC".

I have setup a password in my bitcoin.conf file on windows and know that it works because a miner has been successfully running on windows for the last few days.

I do not have a bitcoin client running on the Ubuntu machine. Only the windows machine.

The only possible idea I have as to why this might not work is because I downloaded poclbm directly from git and perhaps it was in the process of being worked on/upgraded? (I have absolutely no idea how git works).

What are your thoughts?

For the record: I sure hope not.

Cool! But I don't get it..??
884  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Odd pattern in BitcoinMonitor on: April 17, 2011, 09:07:26 AM
They are using a different IP address, different google account, and are even changing the browser ID string on every request-- here are three entries from the request log, for example:

What is wrong with some people? Seriously... someone with the technical skills to automate this can't think of something more worthwhile to do than to steal pennies?

It's really unfortunate, because the Faucet is probably the most important promotional tool that Bitcoin has. So what's next? manual approval of every Faucet transaction? maybe a group of trusted forum members could do this, so that there is always someone online? would be pretty tedious though, I guess.

Pay someone .01 of the .05  to sit there clicking "confirm"

That is probably by far the most intellectual idea. It's a smart idea to have someone online at all times, I'm sure there's someone Gavin can trust.

How is a human going to determine that these are unique requests any better than a script, though?
885  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Does Windows Not Automatically Recognize 5970? on: April 17, 2011, 08:33:13 AM
Make sure a monitor is plugged into it.  Windows won't see the card without a monitor.

Really? So if I have 5x 5970s plugged into a windows machine, I would need 5 monitors to see it?

GPU Caps viewer (and thus windows) can indeed see/access the GPUs.

For some reason they are listed as devices 8 and 9, while my 5870 GPU is listed as device 1.

Any ideas?
886  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Does Windows Not Automatically Recognize 5970? on: April 16, 2011, 11:03:01 PM
So I have a 5870 PowerColor GPU and a 5970 Sapphire GPU.

I plugged the 5870 in first and got it setup and mining on windows around 290Mhash/s

When I plugged the 5970 in... It turns on, gpu caps viewer can see it and it's temperatures, but I can't select that GPU for mining in the GUI miner.

Any ideas as to why or why not?

Also my computer does not boot as usual anymore. It now says "floppy not found" and I have to press f1 for it to continue past that. (Maybe just a setting that the 5970 triggered in the BIOS?)
887  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Connections Dropping To 0 On Bitcoin Client Running 24/7 For Mining... on: April 16, 2011, 10:59:45 PM
I think it was my hard drives being "put to sleep" after about 10 minutes or so.

I would come back to check on the miner and it would be dead because of the 0 connections on bitcoin.

Not behind a router, and I can easily see 50+ connections upon starting up.

I have changed the setting that put the hard drives to sleep. Hopefully that will stop it?!

889  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Can We Protect This Domain From Being Seized? on: April 15, 2011, 07:58:18 PM
Develop BitDNS?

In any case, there's probably no way to prevent bitcoin from being seized. HOWEVER, if they dare to seize the bitcoin domain, they will end up giving us lot of publicity.

It's not that hard to find a different domain, put everything there.

I don't think it works that way.

If they seize bitcoin.org - sure we will receive some publicity - but the public lacks attention, and when they cannot view our domain and have no idea what was there before they will lose interest quicker than your investment portfolio in the last market crash.

Once they seize it, we're never coming back.

Re: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/29/news-views-gossip/reuters-full-tilt-poker-pokerstars-absolute-poker-charged-illegal-gambling-1020606/

This is getting serious.

Can't see it on my internet connection yet but judging from the 30 pages of replies in the last hour I think it's legit.
891  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Downloaded Bitcoin To Debian Squeeze: "sudo: bitcoind: command not found" on: April 14, 2011, 10:20:26 PM
So I have downloaded the compressed bitcoin linux file from bitcoin.org

I can navigate to bin/64/ and open bitcoin to see the graphical interface. I get quite a few connections and my block count rises quickly.

When I enter my terminal however and navigate to the same folder. Entering $bitcoin or $bitcoind or $bitcoind -server returns: bash: bitcoin: command not found

What do you think the problem is?
892  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Please help me keep my GPU temp down on: April 11, 2011, 05:19:22 AM
How careful do I need to be while using the can? The main areas I need to use it are the heatsinks.

1. don't hold the can upside down.  it'll freeze stuff when sprayed (that's a fun trick to cool off a drink though).
2. don't breathe in from the can.
3. when spraying a fan, be sure to hold it still with a finger or you can damage the bearings from overspinning it.

4. Be sure to hold the can at least 6 inches away from whatever you are dusting off.
893  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many connections are you seeing on your Bitcoin client? on: April 08, 2011, 07:01:17 AM
8 from day one. endless 8.  Wink

same for me
I just figured out how to configure port forwarding on my router and I'm getting 30 connections on average  Grin

Congrats!

Anyone else notice more connections on their linux boxes than their microsoft ones?
894  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Can/Will Transactions Ever Be Processed Faster Than Every 10 Minutes? on: April 08, 2011, 06:59:55 AM
As that aspect of Bitcoin severely limits it's "world currency status" potential. (If that is the direction that Bitcoin is heading or being pushed towards, that is.)

I would imagine that one transaction occurring every second would suffice for using Bitcoin as a replacement for the debit/credit/cash system.

If transactions can only be processed every 10 minutes: Bitcoin will be good for purchasing intangible goods and storing a value imho.
895  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin swap-meet in real life? on: April 07, 2011, 07:59:46 PM
...There's one for NY and probably others.
That's kinda what I was thinking. I have gone to a few meetup.com things in the past and they are fun.
P.S. @Plato, I pinned your map.

So that's what they're calling it these days..?
896  Economy / Economics / Re: How to fix bitcoin on: April 07, 2011, 07:58:50 PM
I think there should be a separate subforum for these kind of posts Cheesy

Many forums have "newbie" sections. It would be a good idea for us so we can quickly move posts like this to that area.
897  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many connections are you seeing on your Bitcoin client? on: April 07, 2011, 07:57:54 PM
I'm at 97 right now, but it is usually 125.  I think there is a hard-coded limit at 125 connections because I've never seen more than that.  My uptime is about 120 days at this point, although I occasionally kill bitcoind briefly to update it.  Bandwidth is 10 Mbps.

Wow! I haven't had that many since the outgoing connection limit was reduced from 15 to 8.

Just to combine these thoughts: after looking through the code, there is a hard limit of 125 total connections (can be changed with the "-maxconnections=" command.  There is also a hard limit of 8 outbound connections (only really applies to those behind firewalls who don't have port forwarding set up).

From what I understand, this means that your bitcoin client actively tries to connect to 8 other bitcoin clients.  After that, it is just waiting for other clients to connect to you (up to the 125 limit).

Can that -maxconnections= only be changed using bitcoind?
898  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Go and download the Alexa toolbar! on: April 07, 2011, 07:55:53 PM
Honestly never hear'd of Alexa,
TEACH ME MASTER GOOGLE!!!

Well just download it, it will be good for bitcoin. That's all you need to know.
899  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: All internet connections are not the same... on: April 06, 2011, 06:38:53 PM
Stopping at 8 connections implies that inbound connections are being rejected.  If all you did was add the wifi router into the mix, it's probably configured by default to deny incoming connections on unknown ports.

You were correct!

It was because I did not forward the ports properly.

However that still leaves me with a question about platforms.

Why does bitcoin on linux jump up to 60-70 connections within minutes, and bitcoin on windows 7 takes weeks to get up to 30-40?
900  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Remove "generate bitcoins" from standard client? on: April 06, 2011, 06:36:38 PM
I think it's time to remove the generate bitcoins option from the standard client or at least put a strong warning on it.

We've had quite a few people say something like "I've run the btc miner for 3 months 6 months or whatever and haven't gotten anything"
I would say for every person that posts and tries to find an answer 10 or more just give up / think it's a scam.

At this point CPU mining is almost pointless. The amount of time it takes to get a block makes the chances of getting one so low.

What do you guys think? Obviously have a client available to CPU mine if for some reason someone wants to.

I just booted up a new computer the other day and it's CPU was getting close the 30 MegaHash/s

Of course it would be unwise for the average joe to leave his computer running for 140 days straight just to get 50 bitcoins, I do not think it is up to us to determine exactly what the public's acceptable level of tradeoff should be in this situation.
