8841  Other / Politics & Society / SWAT Team’s Stun Grenade Burns Child, Leaves Him in Coma on: June 01, 2014, 02:38:23 PM

A 19-month-old toddler was critically injured after a police flash bang was tossed into his bed during a police raid at a Habersham County home on Wednesday.
“It’s my baby. He’s my only baby. He didn’t deserve any of this,” said Alecia Phonesavanh, the mother of the child.
“It landed in his playpen and exploded right in his face,” said Phonesavanh.
The child is now being treated at Grady hospital and has a 50 percent chance of survival.
“He’s in the burn unit. We got to see him and his whole face is ripped open. He has a big cut on his chest,” said Phonesavanh. “He’s only 19 months old, he didn’t do anything.”
The sheriff’s department said they had no idea there were children in the house.
“There was no clothes, no toys, nothing to indicate that there was children present in the home. If there had been then we’d have done something different,” said Cornelia police chief Rick Darby.
The child’s parents have contacted the GBI but were told no further investigation was needed.

Four-in-Ten Pakistanis say honor killing of women can be at least sometimes justified

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called for “immediate action” Thursday over the stoning death of a pregnant 25-year-old woman in Lahore earlier this week. Farzana Parveen’s murder, carried out by her family members because she married a man without their consent, has shined a light on so-called “honor killing,” a practice in which relatives end the lives of women and men who are said to bring shame to the family.

Stoning death of 25-year-old Pakistani woman puts focus on views about honor killingsSharif called Parveen’s death “totally unacceptable,” but a Pew Research Center survey conducted in 2011 found that the Prime Minister’s position is unlikely to resonate with all Pakistanis.

Honor killings claim the lives of more than 1,000 Pakistani women every year, according to a Washington Post story citing a Pakistani organization that advocates against honor killings. In the last few years, honor killings in Pakistan have gained international attention, with cases ranging from women refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, seeking a divorce or having a pre- or extra-marital affair.

In the Lahore case, Parveen’s father told police that he sought his daughter’s killing because her marriage to the man without his permission “had insulted all of our family.”

The Pew Research survey did not ask about children marrying without the consent of their parents, but did ask about ending a woman’s life if she engages in premarital sex or adultery. Four-in-ten respondents said that the practice was justified, including three-in-ten (30%) who said it was often justified and 9% who said it was sometimes justified. About half said that ending a woman’s life to protect family honor was rarely (5%) or never (46%) justified.

Although the issue of honor killings is mostly associated with women, a third of Pakistanis said that honor killings of men can be often (23%) or sometimes justified (10%). A slim majority of Pakistanis (57%) said the practice was rarely, if ever justified when men engage in premarital sex or adultery

Study: Everyone hates hired fake environmentalists too...

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-05-30/faux-activism-recruiting-anti-chevron-protesters-for-85-a-head

Julieta Gilbert, executive producer of DFLA Films, said in the e-mail that the company “need to get a group of people to help us document this event. … We will pay each one of them $85. They will be there for a couple of hours (8am to 12 pm). We need ethically [sic] diverse people.”

She obviously meant “ethnically diverse,” but the typo seems illuminating in a Freudian sense. In case anyone missed her point, Gilbert listed the following: “Caucasian, Hispanic, African American and Asian.” Native Americans and Pacific Islanders apparently needn’t have applied for the job.

Television station NewsWest 9 reported the faux protest on its website, noting that viewers “took to our Facebook page this morning saying they received e-mails bribing them with $85 to join this protest.” When I called Gilbert in Los Angeles, she said she “didn’t organize” the protest but only “helped with it.” She professed confusion as to who exactly had commissioned the event and whose idea it was to pay $85 a person for “extras.” She didn’t dispute the authenticity of the recruiting e-mail and she said she’d been in Texas for the May 28 protest and had just returned to California.

I next contacted Karen Hinton, the public-relations person for Steven Donziger, the lead plaintiffs’ lawyer in the lawsuit against Chevron and the mastermind of a long-running media crusade against the oil company. Donziger won a $19 billion judgment against Chevron in Ecuador in 2011. In March, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in New York ruled that Donziger’s victory was based on fabricated evidence, bribery, and extortion—findings that Donziger has denied and appealed. Of the Midland protest, Hinton said via e-mail: “We were not involved at all. Call MCSquared. They handled.”

MCSquared, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., bills itself as “a public relations firm with a team of multi-cultured, multi-generational, highly skilled professionals with more than 20 years of experience in cultural adaptation processes, cross-border business, large-scale and private/intimate event planning.” According to Hinton, MCSquared works for the Republic of Ecuador. The Ecuadorian government has publicly allied itself with Donziger and his clients in attacking Chevron and seeking to get the company to pay up on the (fraudulent) Ecuadorian judgment.

Ecuador has been sponsoring protests around the world against Chevron—events promoted by MCSquared. In her Texas recruiting e-mail, Gilbert said, “We have done many of these events all across the U.S. and abroad.” She directed recipients to a Facebook page called “Chevroffnow.” The Facebook page features prominently an image of Michelle Obama manipulated so that it appears as if she is holding a sign that reads, “#AskChevron about environmental disaster.”

I called Jean-Paul Borja, the contact person identified on a press release MCSquared posted online about the protest at the Chevron shareholders’ meeting in Midland. Borja did not return my call. The press release noted that signs at the demonstration “read, ‘Chevron, you can run but you can’t hide,’ alluding to the company’s decision to hold the annual meeting in Midland, a remote city located in the oil-rich region of the Permian Basin, instead of its San Ramon, Calif., headquarters, allegedly to avoid protesters.”

Or, it turned out, fake protesters.

Chevron spokesman Morgan Crinklaw told me that Chevron was not “hiding” in Midland. Periodically, he said, the company holds its meeting outside of San Ramon. It chose Midland this year because of the city’s historical significance to the oil industry.

Wow, to actually have her kin involved in beating her to death w/ bricks is just downright unbelievable to me. I mean, a dying dog gets a death shot or a bullet in the head but her they just crush bones in such a dated and uncivilized manner. If there's such a thing as mortal sin, they all committed it and shall forever be damned to hell.

..Polar opposite: She is the sinner and she will go to hell, according to her brother, cousins, father, etc, not them. They did good.

It does not matter how leftist rightist believer atheist anarchist you are: this, is the definition of inhumanity.

Radical Feminist: Abolish the White Race. Abolish Men.

I don't know what abolishing white race has to do with promoting gender equality. As far as I can see, gender equality is most visible in countries where the whites are in the majority. Very few of the non-white nations have female-friendly laws.

She look mighty whitey

Exactly, but don't put her in her own equation...

The husband of Farzana Parveen, the Pakistani woman stoned to death for refusing to participate in an arranged marriage, told CNN he killed his first wife so he could marry Parveen.

Authorities said the first wife was killed six years ago.

“I wanted to send a proposal to Farzana, so I killed my wife,” Mohammad Iqbal said Thursday in an interview with CNN.

Zulfiqar Hameed, district inspector general for the Punjab police, said Iqbal’s son from the first marriage alerted police to the slaying six years ago.

Iqbal was arrested but later released on bail because his son forgave him, Hameed said.

The son, Aurengzeb, who is in his 20s, confirmed his father’s statements to CNN. He said his father served a year in jail.

Parveen, who was three months pregnant, was beaten to death with bricks Tuesday in the eastern city of Lahore by a group of about 20 people, including her brothers, father and cousin, police said.

Police have arrested Parveen’s father and are searching for the other killers in this all-too-common crime.

So let me get this straight - and forgive me , because I'm no expert on tech issues - TrueCrypt is/was open source and was maintained by (anonymous) volunteers. To make double sure of the integrity of its encryption (?) it raised enough funds to have an independant "audit" that would give the program a "stress test" - or am I completely off track here ?

Half way through the "audit" (which had thus far been going well) the open source volunteers agree unanimously to cease continuation/support for the Truecrypt project. Is this correct ?

Truecrypt is no longer fit for purpose ?? Sounds very odd to me.

And if its open source can't others take up the challenge ?

   I use 7.0a - is this vulnerable ?

I don't know you obviously but I hope you will get better..

No - I think he meant that he is doing very well health wise, on the basis that he is an absolutely unprecedented genius and that he "told you so", Wilikon.

I'm almost ready to say "Adios forum".

Is that a promise ?

Possibilities:

- UEFI was to much of a pain to overcome.
- NSA Security letter received.
- Other

Questions are:

Why wasn't it just passed to the community?
Why force people to stop using it?

Apparently it is unrelated to the audit that was being carried out. But it seems odd that the devs are advocating Bitlocker. Did money change hands?

Why would Microsoft's end-of-life date for Windows XP affect it?

Very, very odd.

I can only guess telling people to use bitlocker, a program that is closed source and only running on Windows machine is a way to say covertly that nothing is really safe anymore?

Thank you for your thread link.

An estimated 60,000 such children will pour into the United States this year, according to the administration, up from about 6,000 in 2011. Now, Washington is trying to figure out how to pay for their food, housing and transportation once they are taken into custody.

The flow is expected to grow. The number of unaccompanied, undocumented immigrants who are under 18 will likely double in 2015 to nearly 130,000 and cost U.S. taxpayers $2 billion, up from $868 million this year, according to administration estimates.

The shortage of housing for these children, some as young as 3, has already become so acute that an emergency shelter at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, has been opened and can accommodate 1,000 of them, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in an interview with Reuters.

The issue is an added source of tension between Democrats and Republicans, who disagree on how to rewrite immigration laws. With comprehensive legislation stalled, President Barack Obama is looking at small, administrative steps he could take, which might be announced this summer. No details have been outlined but immigration groups are pressing him to take steps to keep families with children together.

The minors flooding over the border are often teenagers leaving behind poverty or violence in Mexico and other parts of Central America such as Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. They are sometimes seeking to reunite with a parent who is already in the United States, also without documentation.

"This is a humanitarian crisis and it requires a humanitarian response," Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski said in an interview. The Maryland Democrat, a former social worker, has likened the flood of unaccompanied children to the "boat people" of past exodus movements.

Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama, the senior Republican on Mikulski's committee, said, "The need is there, you know the humanitarian aspect of it, but we're challenged on money."

8859  Other / Politics & Society / Directive outlines Obama’s plan to use the military against citizens on: May 29, 2014, 02:59:07 PM

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/may/28/inside-the-ring-directive-outlines-obamas-policy-t/

The troubling aspect of the directive outlines presidential authority for the use of military arms and forces, including unarmed drones, in operations against domestic unrest.
“This appears to be the latest step in the administration’s decision to use force within the United States against its citizens,” said a defense official opposed to the directive.
Directive No. 3025.18, “Defense Support of Civil Authorities,” was issued Dec. 29, 2010, and states that U.S. commanders “are provided emergency authority under this directive.”

“Federal military forces shall not be used to quell civil disturbances unless specifically authorized by the president in accordance with applicable law or permitted under emergency authority,” the directive states.
“In these circumstances, those federal military commanders have the authority, in extraordinary emergency circumstances where prior authorization by the president is impossible and duly constituted local authorities are unable to control the situation, to engage temporarily in activities that are necessary to quell large-scale, unexpected civil disturbances” under two conditions.
The conditions include military support needed “to prevent significant loss of life or wanton destruction of property and are necessary to restore governmental function and public order.” A second use is when federal, state and local authorities “are unable or decline to provide adequate protection for federal property or federal governmental functions.”

“Federal action, including the use of federal military forces, is authorized when necessary to protect the federal property or functions,” the directive states.
Military assistance can include loans of arms, ammunition, vessels and aircraft. The directive states clearly that it is for engaging civilians during times of unrest.
A U.S. official said the Obama administration considered but rejected deploying military force under the directive during the recent standoff with Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his armed supporters.
Mr. Bundy is engaged in a legal battle with the federal Bureau of Land Management over unpaid grazing fees. Along with a group of protesters, Mr. Bundy in April confronted federal and local authorities in a standoff that ended when the authorities backed down.
The Pentagon directive authorizes the secretary of defense to approve the use of unarmed drones in domestic unrest. But it bans the use of missile-firing unmanned aircraft.
“Use of armed [unmanned aircraft systems] is not authorized,” the directive says.
The directive was signed by then-Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn. A copy can be found on the Pentagon website:
