NYPD: Bitcoin thieves posing as government officials have stolen over $2M

New York’s Police Department (NYPD) is alerting the public about phone scammers posing as Social Security Administration officials and requesting payment in Bitcoin, $BTC▲2.67% prepaid gift cards, and bank wire transfers.

NYPD noted the scammers have already thieved millions of dollars by exploiting the trusted reputation of government agencies.

Such scams are on the rise, NYPD said. So far this year, the NYPD has received more than 200 complaints with losses totalling more than $2 million. In 2018, the NYPD received only three similar complaints.

Be careful out there, scammers is using another strategy, although this is not new, but still it looks like very effective as it was reported that they have stolen more than $2 million already. You just don't know, you might get a phone call one of this days so don't believed in everything you hear and just your common sense.

Arizona Man And Israeli Woman Charged In Connection With Providing Shadow Banking Services To Cryptocurrency Exchanges

Geoffrey S. Berman, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, William F. Sweeney Jr., the Assistant Director-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”), and Jonathan D. Larsen, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the New York Office of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division (“IRS-CI”), announced the arrest today of REGINALD FOWLER on charges of bank fraud and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business.  Bank fraud charges were also unsealed against co-conspirator RAVID YOSEF, who remains at large.  FOWLER and YOSEF, who worked for several related companies that provided fiat-currency banking services to various cryptocurrency exchanges (the “Crypto Companies”), allegedly participated in a conspiracy in which FOWLER made numerous false and misleading statements to banks to open bank accounts that were used to receive deposits from individuals purchasing cryptocurrency, and in which FOWLER and YOSEF falsified electronic wire payment instructions to conceal the true nature of a voluminous cryptocurrency exchange business.  Hundreds of millions of dollars flowed through the Crypto Companies’ accounts from banks located across the globe. FOWLER will be presented today in federal court in Phoenix, Arizona.  The case is assigned to U.S. District Judge Andrew L. Carter Jr.

https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/arizona-man-and-israeli-woman-charged-connection-providing-shadow-banking-services

That name sound familiar? RAVID YOSEF? Yes, because it's the same person who is part of the QuadrigaCX exit scam. So it looks like there is a connection way before everyone really knows what's going on behind, and it looks like there are some connections between Bitfinex and QuadrigaCX after all. So the plot thickens.

8903  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: There should be a wikipedia page of casinos that accept bitcoin on: May 02, 2019, 03:33:40 PM
I disagree, if you really wanted to see which casino's really accepts bitcoin then this community is the answer. Besides, wikipedia has a very strict rule as far as what you can post in their page and as soon as they realize that you are promoting something against their TOS, sooner or later it will be flagged down and taken offline.
8904  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2019 NBA Season on: May 02, 2019, 03:15:57 PM
I can't believe Blazers just won a game where Damian Lillard scored just 14 points. I mean I do know that their team is becoming more of a "team" rather than a star player carrying type of deal and even without Lillard they would be semi-decent (not where they are but definitely not at suns levels, more like Lakers levels) but when your star point guard scores only 14 points you gotta expect your team to lose that game.

Remember James Harden going like 0 out of 13 during their Jazz series? I guess it really boils down as to how they are going to play defense on the opposing them. Although they shot miserably, they play good defense on Jokic that's why they're able to pull up a win.

Nuggets played such a horrible offensive game that it could be one of the biggest examples of bad shooting performance after 27 in a row miss of rockets last year. They shot 34% from the field goal, that is average for three pointers and they shot it on field goal averages, they had %20 on three pointers which is insanely horrible in this day and age and not like those were enough they shot 61% from the free throws, they really really sucked so bad its unbelievable.

Worst time to have a off night, but it might be due to the tight defense by Portland. So there's nothing to blame but themselves, they can't and didn't adjust.
8905  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: BitCrasha | New BTC Crash Site | Suggestions Wanted! on: May 01, 2019, 02:37:11 PM
Do you have a working model? If not how would the users be able to suggest?
What do you mean by BTC Crash site. Do you mean something similar to rocket.run ? Because I love the fun of playing there.
Some suggestions.
1. Active chat between users.
2. Graphical and maybe some unique graphics for added fun.
3. Auto mode with multiple options.

They said they're new licensed site under bustabit, so I'm assuming that this is another online dice site and not a crash site like rocket.run. (Please correct me, OP). Your 1 and 2 suggestions I'm sure will be included in their software since it will run on bustabit source code. Faucet will be a good thing though for starters. My only suggestion is that admins or mods to be active though in this community, specially if gamblers have problems with their deposits/withdrawals.
8906  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Building an P2P gambling thread on bitcointalk on: May 01, 2019, 02:22:09 PM
As others have said, you don't need to be a senior member. Someone already posted a link on buying a copper membership so that you can post image so that will be a good thing to do for now. You don't need to share revenues, if you are sincere and really interested on building a P2P then build one and post it in the right thread and answer all queries/questions and follow some good suggestions.
8907  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Don't follow the hype on: May 01, 2019, 02:05:09 PM
I mean there's nothing wrong following the hype, timing is everything. If you get inside prior to the mad rush then obviously, you can make a lot of profit. But buying them when they are already at it's peak then it's a wrong decision. Every coins went to the drain when we entered the bear market, so unless you sold off already, then that is fine. But if you are still hodling them, then you don't have a chose but to just hodl on it and wait for the market to bounce back.
8908  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: CryptocurrencyTrading Platform-any advice? on: May 01, 2019, 01:40:19 PM
Don't have any names though, but it looks like you are just promoting this so called crypto exchange service. We have seen lots of newbies trying to attempt the same, so I do hope that you are sincere though. Maybe you can post in Project Development board.
8909  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is a Bitcoin Millionaire on: April 28, 2019, 07:47:10 AM
It's just bitcoin addresses, no name is attached to it so it will be hard to identify them eventhough everything is on the blockchain. So there's no need to exert efforts to find them. And purpose does it served though? After you have find at least one? Go after them? No crypto investors with huge amount of bitcoin will exposed themselves in public maybe some few notable persons. Are you will to tell anyone out there that you have own millions worth of bitcoin?
8910  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2019 NBA Season on: April 28, 2019, 06:58:54 AM
Congratulations to the Denver Nuggets for winning the game 7 at home, that was a tough fight but they were successful.
The 2nd round they will be facing the Blazers, Lillard is always unstoppable but this time they will surely miss Nurkic as Jokic will surely dominate the inside.

The score, 90-86. Nuggets started strong building a huge lead, but we all know that San Antonio has the capability to come back, so they did, cutting the lead to 2 with less than a minute. However, Murray hit a clutch floater with 40 seconds left, sealing the with. Jokic finished with 21 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists (triple-double). Now they are going to face the red hot Lillard and Portland in the second round.

There are discussions that this is a potential security nightmares for crypto enthusiast who uses smartphones as their crypto wallet. So just be careful when entering your pins or passwords in public places, you will never know who's watching you at your back, or in this case above you.  Grin.
8913  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do you think should happen with @bitcoin handle on Twitter? on: April 27, 2019, 01:37:11 PM
Twitter is a private company, it by definition can't be censorship if they do something with their platform. In fact, the real censorship is telling Twitter what they can and can't do with their platform. If I were in their shoes, I would personally nuke that account. It's deceptive and scammy to have a twitter handle for one organization, yet actively use it to promote it's competitor. This is how we end up with newbies who by mistake send their coins to wrong blockchain.

I totally agree, because that account is really misleading people to think that this is a real Bitcoin handle. But we all know that @bitcoin twitter handle has been on the hands of Roger Ver or someone shilling for bitcoin cash. Actually, I opened up a thread in B&H [Reminder]: Specially for newbies BCH is not BTC.
8914  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2019 NBA Season on: April 27, 2019, 01:19:47 PM
Looks like the warriors are going to end the series tonight.
Its's all been Durant show so far, and their defense is really good making Lou Williams scored only 6 points.
Durant also made history for scoring 38 points, I think he tied Charles Barkley for most points scored in a half, they both rank 2nd now.

I also have the source here, https://www.sfchronicle.com/warriors/article/Kevin-Durant-ties-Charles-Barkley-with-historic-13799922.php?psid=1fqab

Good for them, a lot of people have been questioning their will to win against this Clippers. I haven't seen the game though, but if ever they win then they will silence all their critics and proved why they are the defending champs. Congratulations in advance and now it's second round, baby!!.

2nd round is more tougher for the GSW, but they are champ, they will be more confident here.

They have the home court advantage and just like the Clippers, Lou Williams is their man and if he can't score they loss, I think the same will happen with the Rockets if they can stop Harden, let's see how it goes but I still like the GSW to win again against them, game 7 would be alright.

This is how I see GSW performance against LA Clippers. They overlooked Clippers and think that they can easily win against the 8th seed. Over complacent and they are caught by surprised, specially that comeback win against them in game 2. They re-adjust but then fall for the same again. Durant really have to dig deeper on his bag of tricks in this game in order for them to win.

I think the next game with Houston will be different though. There's a lot of pride in this match up. I think it's Steph's time to shine against the Rockets in this series. I'm seeing 4-2 for GSW.
8915  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Breaks $5,600 As New Highs Are Achieved For 2019 on: April 27, 2019, 12:47:22 PM
It is all green once again across the top cryptocurrencies as Bitcoin crosses $5,600 for the first time in 2019, setting up the market for an upward movement that has been anticipated by many.
Read more here: https://www.cryptofish.com/blog/bitcoin-breaks-new-highs/
Many people are not seeing this and some are even saying it is falling to $3800! I think we are going to have a glorious 2019 . If you have strong desire to invest now should be the right time to do so as I am speculating bitcoin heading towards $10,000 very soon.

Because people have there own narrative behind saying that the price could fall to $3800. Maybe they want to spread panic or buy at dips. Unfortunately, the day of FUD are over, investors are getting smarter and people are not listening to his sort of negativity. Maybe it will have a effect, but in the long run bitcoin will continue to grow because that how it was design. It is a cycle, every 4 years, we will see lots of ups and downs but eventually it will hit all-time-high again.

It's because that's what North Korea is good, exploit every system in the world.  Grin. But I'm disappointed though, the author needs a better job, he totally forgot to mentioned about the Lazarus group, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazarus_Group. It's state sponsored, but I don't give a damn, North Korea has been doing this for ages though, that's why US and West are putting lots of trade sanctions against this country.

Electrum Personal Server 0.1.7 - includes a binary release for Windows so users don't need to install anything

Quote
Electrum Personal Server is an implementation of the Electrum wallet server protocol that allows users to point their Electrum wallet at their own full node. It allows the user to benefit from all of Bitcoin Core's resource-saving features like pruning, blocksonly and disabled txindex. All of Electrum's feature-richness like hardware wallet integration, multisignature wallets, offline signing, seed phrases and so on can still be used, but connected only to the user's own full node.

Full release notes:

-Releases will now also be packaged as windows binaries using pyinstaller.

    - Added option to allow broadcasting unconfirmed transactions via any system call, for example it could
be a shell script which broadcasts via SMS or radio.

    - Added option which allows disabling the mempool histogram feature which is useful on low-powered
devices when the mempool is large.

    - Deprecated electrum-personal-server-rescan script in favour of electrum-personal-server --rescan

   -  No longer adds orphaned coinbase txes as unconfirmed.

    - If pruning is enabled and block is not available then send dummy merkle proof, which Electrum will -
accept if run with the command line flag --skipmerklecheck

    - Fix bug involving transactions with unconfirmed inputs.

    - Various other bugfixes

Exscudo adds SEPA deposits to the Exscudo Exchange

Quote
We are excited to announce that SEPA deposit functionality has been added to the Exscudo Exchange. The option to send fiat deposits in EUR and USD is already available to the users of the Exscudo Exchange worldwide with the exception of the US and selected countries. The introduction of fiat deposit will allow traders to top up their balances using a fiat currency of their choice, giving Exscudo clients an extra choice in deposit options.

With the latest update, Exscudo users will be able to top up their accounts in the Exchange using a bank transfer, allowing to bypass previously necessary step to buy cryptocurrency first in order to start trading. With the addition of fiat deposits support Exscudo hopes to make its exchange more convenient and user-friendly, especially to more novice traders who might not yet have a diverse cryptocurrency portfolio.

https://blog.exscudo.com/exscudo/exscudo-adds-sepa-deposits-to-the-exscudo-exchange/

Ok, it looks like this is a big news for Exscudo Exchange as this is another step to gain more customers because of accessibility and it will really benefit most of the newbies traders out there, and mind you they are growing in numbers everyday. So best of luck!!!
8920  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Would Ethereum remain the number 1 smart-contract platform in 2020 and onward? on: April 26, 2019, 05:42:11 AM
What do you think would Ethereum sustain this pressure and retain its leading spot?

How would the Proof of Stake, if implemented in time, work for Ethereum?

There has been lots of pressure and Ethereum dev's are up to the challenge.

Would Ethereum solve their scalability issue?

Does Ethereum decentralization give it an edge over other centralized smart contract platforms?

They have addressed the scalability issues so I don't think that is the problem right now. And it seems almost all the projects in the pipeline is based on Ethereum so I would assume that they will continue to dominate in the next 5 years or so.
