901  Other / Meta / Re: Question about images. on: January 21, 2024, 08:16:26 AM
@ObscurePen
If you notice that a user or several of them have a lot of broken images in their old posts, you can tag those users and post about it in this thread I created for that purpose:
Tag a user to update their broken image links
Some have fixed their images after being mentioned, others don't care or haven't noticed the tag.

regarding the "another hosting service", are you perhaps referring to vgy.me? Recently a forum member posted that the images he uploaded from that image hosting have become broken.
That was me. I used that image host in the past, and just like Imgur, it also doesn't work on the forum anymore. TryNinja explained how to add some more code to his automatic image uploading script to include the pictures from vgy.me as well. It works if those images are still available and the host didn't delete them from its servers.
902  Other / Meta / Re: Allow to make thread self-moderated even after posting on: January 21, 2024, 08:01:21 AM
If you think what people are commenting is not good enough then you can report those post to the mod to have them deleted...
Not good enough isn't a rule violation, and more often than not, admins aren't going to delete such posts. A lack of quality in posting or spelling isn't the same as spam or off-topic posting. It can be if it ticks a few other boxes, but not necessarily.
903  Other / Meta / Re: Admin/Mods: Please ban "jvanname" on: January 21, 2024, 07:53:12 AM
Maybe replying directly to him gives him the fuel he needs to keep posting here.
That's how most trolls operate. People get emotional and want to correct their mistakes and wrong claims, and then they draw you into an argument that turns personal and eventually has nothing to do with the topic that was originally discussed. I suggest putting the person on ignore, as I don't believe admins will take any action against them. Let jvanname keep up his obsessions with poop and move on. Eventually check up on them to see if their posts are breaking any actual rules and report them, hoping for the best.
904  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor's 3rd-Party Support Portal was Hacked on: January 21, 2024, 07:37:39 AM
If someone has move from software wallet to a hardware like trezor I believe he/she most have know the pros and cons or does and don't of wallets. So from my perspective I don't want to believe that someone would fall for this simple trick of sending your passphrase to anyone.
It sometimes amazes me what kind of cheap tricks people fall for. It's things like giving scammers their seeds and private keys by entering them in a phishing site that is on top of the list. It still works, and scammers still make money that way. In other cases, it's carelessness or tiredness that causes people to commit mistakes and not notice what they are doing.

Even before you could finish setting up your trezor wallets passphrase there is a caution that says "do not give out your passphrase to anyone it's your private property." That should be enough warning except for the fact that it was targeted on users who might have been offline.
Don't mistake the recovery phrase/seed for the passphrase. Those are two completely different things. Trezor surely cautions you not to give out the recovery phrase. The passphrase is an advanced and optional security feature that you can set up if you want, but it's not a requirement to do so. Due to Trezor's unfixable seed extraction vulnerability, it's recommended to have one or multiple passphrases set up.
905  Economy / Gambling / Re: [Table] Withdrawal Fees and Withdrawal Amounts on Crypto Casinos on: January 21, 2024, 07:28:36 AM
There was one mistake I noticed but I dont think it was made by your, maybe it was some glitch with developer who made code for this calculation.
BetHash was showing 0.02 BTC minimum withdrawal amount but dollar value was only 27.12 USD  Grin
I have seen similar glitches myself. Sometimes a random number appears instead of the actual USD value. At other times, I have noticed a USD value that is crossed out or is showing an incomplete digit or two. A refresh or opening the thread in a new tab usually fixes the problem on my end.
906  Economy / Gambling / Re: [Table] Withdrawal Fees and Withdrawal Amounts on Crypto Casinos on: January 20, 2024, 07:38:06 PM
Update:
- The withdrawal fees and amounts for all casinos have been checked and corrected throughout the last week.
- I have updated the table with the correct red and green colors for all casinos where it was needed.
- The lists at the bottom of the OP have been updated accordingly.

As always, if you notice a mistake, don't hesitate to speak up!
907  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Trezor's 3rd-Party Support Portal was Hacked on: January 20, 2024, 06:38:16 PM
Trezor has just informed the public that there was a security incident on 17 January 2024 that affected their third-party support ticketing portal. Someone gained access to the platform and certain sensitive data.

Here is what is known so far:

- The hack DID NOT compromise the hardware wallets or seeds of users in any way.
- Trezor was not hacked. A third-party service they use was compromised.
- The hack affected users who may have been in contact with Trezor customer support since December 2021.
- It's believed that up to 66,000 users may have been affected.
- The leaked data involves email addresses and names/usernames used.
- The hacker already contacted 41 users and requested they email him their seeds to "check the firmware version on their device."

Trezor has already started contacting the 66,000 users they believe may have been affected. If you are among those, expect an email from noreply@trezor.io today or tomorrow.

Here is an example of the phishing email that customers received from the hacker:

What now?
Nothing changes. Never enter your seed or send it to anyone, no matter who asks. Think before you do anything that might compromise you and your funds.

You can read a detailed report on the security incident on the Trezor blog:

Go poop on yourself.

-Joseph Van Name Ph.D.
Spoken like a true Ph.D.

This thread is 4 pages long and I haven't read any other posts, so my apologies if my question is a repetition. Has anyone contacted the real person that this user is allegedly impersonating and asked if this is them posting on Bitcointalk? I am pretty sure it's not, but just in case. If it's a known University professor, there is surely a way to contact him, and if he is interested, he will reply back.

And regarding the ban, what forum rules is the person breaking by impersonating someone else? I am not aware of such rules, but I might be wrong. The admins aren't going to take action even if someone asks for money and scams other members. I don't agree with that, but that's what it is.
909  Other / Meta / Re: Allow to make thread self-moderated even after posting on: January 20, 2024, 02:44:51 PM
If there is an option that allows a universal setting it might be productive however on the flip side what would happen if all threads were created with self-moderation by default and the box had to be unchecked in order to create the thread without moderation?
Yeah, in case all threads are self-moderated by default, there should also be an option in your profile settings to create standard and non self-moderated threads. If users abuse their rights and delete the posts of others without a valid reason, admins should have an option to remove the self-moderation ability of those members or punish them with temporary bans or in some other way. But considering that it creates additional workload, I doubt anything will change.
910  Other / Meta / Re: Allow to make thread self-moderated even after posting on: January 20, 2024, 08:22:41 AM
I always forget to make it self-moderated at the first chance Smiley and remember after creating the topic. Then I just delete it and make a new one.
Imagine if there was a setting in our profiles that we could turn on to make new threads self-moderated by default? That way, you wouldn't have to bother remembering to tick the self-moderated topic option for each new discussion you create. You only do it once in your profile settings. Again, this shouldn't be available to all ranks or not at all. I am just rambling.
911  Other / Meta / Re: Find a deleted post that contains a specific text on: January 20, 2024, 08:16:29 AM
I really though it only works just like that, since there's a note below "Click preview to save a draft." below the "Post" and "Preview" button.
That note is still correct. It applies to situations where you are working on a post/thread but you don't have time to finish it to post it. The quickest and easiest way to save it for later is clicking the 'Preview' button and saving your work as a draft. Later on, you can just copy-paste it from there and continue where you left off. I don't know what the next-best alternative would be. Perhaps saving the unfinished post in a .txt or .doc file on your computer.
912  Other / Meta / Re: Allow to make thread self-moderated even after posting on: January 20, 2024, 08:05:37 AM
Self moderated threads have a warning there telling other users to avoid posting if they don't want to be moderated by the OP, changing it after a user already posted means they get to be subject to something they may have not wanted.
You are always subjected to possible moderation every time you post on this forum. If the staff feels like your post breaks any forum rules or it gets reported, there is a possibility you will get moderated both in a self-moderated and standard thread. With OP's suggestion, you are just adding one more person to the mix that has the ability to moderate you.

OP's suggestion has both positives and negatives.
There are cases when a user might have wished that they created a self-moderated thread if the discussion starts moving in an undesirable direction. If that happens, a button press to allow self-moderation would be a welcome change.

But it also opens the door to abuse as others rightly said. Just recently, we had a case of a well-known legendary member deleting and editing all their OPs. No need to mention any names, most people know who I am talking about. Imagine if they had the ability to go on a self-moderated post deletion spree as well which affected hundreds of users? It would just look bad.

But perhaps to limit such incidents, turning a normal thread into a self-moderated one could be a feature only available to certain ranks. Similarly to having the ability to wear an avatar, theymos could perhaps enable it for Full Members and above.
913  Other / Meta / Re: Find a deleted post that contains a specific text on: January 20, 2024, 07:45:31 AM
This is only possible if the OP clicked the "preview" button before posting it then got deleted later on. Else it won"t save on that page.
It should still save without clicking the preview button. The explanation on the drafts page says that "Drafts are saved whenever you preview or post a topic, post, or PM". I actually didn't know that it also saves PMs, but good to know. The only issue with the drafts page is that if you often click the preview button, it can get filled quickly. There is a 100 drafts maximum limit. I don't know how others post, but I preview my posts often and sometimes multiple times before posting it. In my case, 100 drafts isn't a lot.
914  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which crypto wallet to use for 8,000$? on: January 19, 2024, 06:22:16 PM
Get your money off of the exchange as soon as possible. The coins aren't yours until you are in control of the private keys.

Since you have $8000 worth of BTC, the best combination of security and convenience is achieved with a hardware wallet. Depending on how much you are willing to invest, you can get one starting at around $50 and going up to several hundred dollars. Check out Trezor, Foundation Passport, or ColdCard. You can even purchase an offline signer like the Seedsigner.

If you have an extra laptop/PC lying around and collecting dust, you can turn it into an airgapped computer by removing all connectivity hardware, reformatting the drive, and installing Electrum on it. That PC should never again go online.

Alternatively, you can use a live OS like Tails that comes with Electrum installed on it. The less safe and non-recommended option (in my opinion) is using a software wallet like Electrum, Bitcoin Core, or a multi-coin wallet on a internet-connected computer.
915  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin ETFs - Good or Bad? on: January 19, 2024, 02:58:22 PM
<Snip>
I was about to say something similar. Remember the day before the official ETF approval, when SEC's twitter profile posted that bitcoin ETFs were official approved? The price shot up from around 44k to almost 48k, only to fall down further after they deleted the tweet and claimed it was a hack. The day after, when it was finally official, the market didn't react in a similar fashion. And now, it's moving downwards, contrary to everyone's expectations. But it's not surprising because many people were saying that a big correction is around the corner. Maybe the last one before the halving hype.
916  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin changed people (enemy to supporter). Lary Fink (BlackRock CEO) 2017 2024 on: January 19, 2024, 02:44:07 PM
If he was actually a supporter he would perhaps be mentioning buying a bunch of bitcoin for himself. I am sure he owns zero sats.
If he was a supporter and bitcoiner, he would guide people to buying bitcoin without a trusted middleman who erns commission fees every time someone makes a deal. Nevertheless, These businessmen might be owning some bitcoin and crypto in general on the side, no matter what they say. The volatility and regular price movements allow them to enter and exit the market frequently and perhaps even anonymously.
917  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Keystone 3 HW coming soon! on: January 19, 2024, 02:35:19 PM
For verification, you can use Open Source software to make sure that the wallet does not replace data.
https://iancoleman.io/bip39/
You should only enter your seed on Ian Coleman's tool to test if the wallet generates the same addresses as what you are getting from the hardware device. Never enter your actual seed phrase into Ian Coleman, especially not on an internet-connected computer. The Ian Coleman tool should be used on an airgapped system. If you don't have that, never enter sensitive data into your browser.
918  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What happens if all Bitcoin is lost? on: January 18, 2024, 04:51:20 PM
You will have to explain how do you think that all the bitcoin will get lost all of a sudden?

Many holders have lost their keys, making their coins inaccessible unless they find them again. More will do it in the future. Those are lost coins. It's highly unlikely that every single bitcoin owner will lose their keys one day. Perhaps you think a malicious future update could render all keys useless, but if we take into account how difficult it is to make changes to the protocol that everyone will agree on, that's pretty much impossible. Finally, even if all of the bitcoin got hacked and stolen, we still can't say it's lost. The ownership, changed and those possessing the new keys have access to it. That would pretty much signal the death of Bitcoin, though.
919  Economy / Speculation / Re: Best time to buy Bitcoin is around the time of Bitcoin Halving: April 22, 2024 on: January 18, 2024, 04:38:04 PM
If we look at the graph you posted carefully, the first halving event caused the price to rise immediately. This wasn't the case with the 2nd and 3rd halving events. You can see on the image that bitcoin was following a downward trajectory the second and third time, before the prices moved upwards to reach new all-time-highs. It's going to be interesting to see how it will act this time around.
920  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Have you ever regretted selling your bitcoins ? on: January 18, 2024, 04:30:30 PM
One shouldn't feel sorry for selling and exiting their positions at a time when they needed the money or felt it was time to sell. This is an economy that works in cycles. After a high there is always a low where you can stack up again and even recover from past losses. If the money you got from selling years ago was for a good use and spent intelligently, there is no need to feel that you have missed out on more profit and be sad about it.
