In short, it's about football, an insight into the revenue discrepancy between the Premier League and the other top leagues in Europe, as well as the Champions League in recent years, and what the imbalance and concentration of money and talent in just a few locations mean for the sport's future. Premier League clubs' revenues have been higher than other leagues for decades, but the size of the gap is now vast.
Today the gap is more than €2bn, allowing English sides to comfortably outbid most of their continental rivals on transfers and wages. Most of the difference is caused by the Premier League's much higher broadcast revenues. This season EPL 🏴 booked £3.1bn for TV rights, vs £1.8bn for La Liga 🇪🇸 Next year the La Liga 🇪🇸 package will dip to £1.6bn, while EPL 🏴 will rise to £3.4bn, according to @Football_BM Some club-by-club examples are ... eye-opening. When Inter won the Italian title in 2021, they made around €85mn from Serie A TV money (via @SwissRamble) That same year, Sheffield United received around €115mn for finishing 20th in the Premier League. While the bulk of the Premier League's financial advantage comes from its vast TV deals, commercial revenues also play a big part.
Since the mid 2010s both broadcast and commercial incomes have skyrocketed, far outpacing the other big four leagues. Now you might look at all that and say, "okay so some football clubs make a lot more money now. So what?"
The issue is, this money ? and who has it ? has *completely* transformed the competitive balance of the game, and it's glaring wherever you look. Let's start with the Champions League. In the early 1990s, clubs from all across Europe routinely reached the semi-finals.
We had 13 different countries represented in the semis across 5 years, including clubs from Serbia and Romania. Today? It's virtually a closed shop. It's now exceptional when a club from outside the big five leagues reaches the last-four, and when they do their stars are gobbled up by the superclubs In a typical season, *three quarters* of UCL semi-finalists now come from just six cities, let alone countries (HT @KuperSimon) Here's another view of the same data.
In the 5 years ending 1987, *18* different clubs reached the semis, including Steaua București, Dundee United, IFK Göteborg & Widzew Łódź.
Today, it's a safe bet that 2-3 of this year's final four will be in next year's semis, too. This is the metaphorical frog in a pan of water. There have been few overnight black-and-white transformations, but after years of incremental increases in inequality,
the experience of supporting the average football club in 2022 is unrecognisable from the same in the 70s or 80s And of course the Premier League is not alone here.
The gap between top and bottom of every one of Europe's big five leagues is far wider today than in decades past.
(And looking at the shape of that Ligue 1 line, it's a wonder French fans aren't on the brink of revolution...) Here's the same thing over time. Two decades of increasing competitive inequality in almost every league.
And no coincidence that the biggest gaps and steepest climbs feature clubs owned by nation states, whose budgets are essentially limitless. We celebrated last year when the European Super League collapsed, but the current model is only superficially better.
Sure, at least with the current formats there's a *theoretical* chance of a superclub dropping out of the elite. But really...?

Tucker 1+ assists @1.98 ∆ XI think i've lost more bets in this conference finals series between the Heat and the Celtics than i did in the last two months of the regular season. Lol So much random shit has happened so far that it's difficult to follow logic or anything, vets laying bricks like JV league players, and the next thing you know they go for 50 out of nowhere... I guess i'm rooting for Miami, but i wouldn't mind seeing Tatum and Brown make their first NBA Finals appearances, or even Horford, who has had a solid career but has never made it to the Finals either. As for my bet, i wanted to find lines that have actually occurred in each of the games played, it wasn't easy...it's just too much inconsistency. Tucker 1+ assists @1.66 ∆ XGame 5 was easily one of the worst conference finals games i've watched in recent memory, Heat forced so many bad shots like you wouldn't believe, eyesore 38 missed 3s. Lowry playing on a bad hamstring, Jimmy hasn't been the same since game 3 with his troubled knee or whatever, that's why i'm going with Bam today. Bam was sensational in game 3 (in Boston) on both ends of the floor with 31 points, 4 steals, and a block. Considering all the injuries i expect him to lead the Heat in scoring. I have J. Butler steal in there, he has had at least one steal in 4 of the 5 games, also a P.J. Tucker assist...Tucker has had 1 in each of the 5, he will get a pass leading to a bucket, i bet Heat won't look that bad on offense, they can't! |

∆ L. Doncic 25+ points / L. Doncic 8+ rebounds / L. Doncic 1+ steals @1.72 ∆ wonI'm rooting for the Mavericks to win, i'd like to see the series being extended, but i'm not sure they can pull it off. It will probably come down to whether or not they make their three-point shots: "you live by the 3pt, you die by the 3pt". If Finney-Smith, Bullock, and Kleber can recreate their Game 4 performance (12/20 3pt @60%), i think Dallas has a chance. Luka is one of the very few players who has been consistent throughout the series, so my prop is on him. He's averaging 33/9/2 (vs. Warriors) and 32/10/2 (21/22 postseason). Even if they get eliminated tonight (which is likely), i'm confident Doncic will put up on a show. |

I only found this thread a few days ago but didn't want to post here till the final gameweek was complete. I had a position to defend and didn't want to jinx myself...lol How did everyone's year go, what is your overall rank, and did you guys win your mini-leagues? This was my first time playing FPL, and i must say i quite enjoyed it, OR 31k (2576 points), which isn't bad considering everything. Going triple Chelsea for -8 in GW34 was one of my worst decisions all season, forcing me to sell Son, and preventing me from getting Maddison. They both hauled like crazy after that, 100+ point swing based on one lousy move. There is a lot of room for improvement for me next season, starting with taking less hits and not making kneejerk early transfers. I finished third in Sportsbet's Clubhouse League, and i was wondering if anyone else from the forum made the TOP 10 (paid positions)? I think i recognized buwaytress and Steve's accounts, but they both give up on playing after only a few gameweeks. We should absolutely make a forum mini-league next season! |

∆ J. Brunson 15+ points / L. Doncic 1+ steal / M. Kleber 1+ 3pt @1.89 ∆ XIt's a do or die for Dallas, if they go down 3-0, GSW will wrap the series up in 4. I like what i saw from Brunson in game 2, he was aggressive with his shot and is likely to get north of 15 shot attempts again. He has scored 15 or more points in 6/L7. Doncic has recorded one or more steals in eight consecutive games, hope that streak continues today. Dallas will need a little more production from their bench, and with Kleber having only 2 3-pointers in the first two games and a -28 (+/-), i expect him to wake up and knock down a few from deep, as role players usually play better at home. |

What a season it has been though, especially the last third of the season, 6 straight wins and 17 without a loss...and still, it was a tight race to end. Williams 1+ 3pt @1.86 ∆ X Butler and Tatum to score 20 or more points, the Heat have yet to show in the series that they can stop Tatum (29 and 27 in game 2), and the same goes for Butler, who torched Boston with 41 in game 1 and 29 the next game, Jimmy has gone 20+ pts 11/12 in the playoffs. M. Smart to get at least one steal, i'm not asking much from the reigning defensive player of the year, am i? Smart has recorded at least one steal in each of Boston's home games in the playoffs so far. I also have Grant Williams, who gets a few open threes every game and is practically automatic from the corner. |

Think I'm gonna hit each home team in this series so long as nothing wildly changes Smart and Horford are back in the starting lineup for Boston (with no minutes restriction), but like you, i'm on the Heat train and will take them on the moneyline. So far in the playoffs Heat at home are +113 points and 7 out of 7, quite literally blowing out teams with an average of 16 points.  With the way they're playing, this may be their year! They have twice as better NetRtg as the Celtics and Golden State, and they're also the only team to keep their opponents under 100 ppg in the playoffs (98.3). " Defense wins championships," as the saying goes. ...now watch them flop and lose homecourt. |
