901  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Happy New Years! Seventh alt coin thread! on: January 05, 2018, 09:06:28 PM
I love SSDs and installed probably 40 of them last year for customers in my IT business.  And, my first two rigs have them.  But, the two new ones I'm working on I'm throwing in some used laptop hard drives simply because I have those on hand and don't have any SSDs in stock.  So other than a little bit of boot speed and shaving off a few watts of power consumption, is there any reason why SSDs are so popular in mining rigs?

changing drivers,  re configuring or installing new miners, os updates (if thats your thing, i do, even on mining rigs), general maintenance, install new/different OS, all fly on ssds. my time is worth more than the 50 bucks for a 120 gig ssd.

i cant stand waiting around for rigs to finish doing whatever when i could be, well doing something, anything else.

Dunno why you would be doing much if any "changing drivers, reconfiguring" and such on working rigs.

Definitely a time saver on NEW rigs I grant - DD to clone a drive runs SO MUCH FASTER when a SSD is involved.

10k chips a month - which is barely enough for what,  600 miners?

 DROP IN THE BUCKET.

 2 1070
 0 1070 ti
 0 1080
1 and perhaps 2 1080 ti models in stock (can't tell for sure on the "members exclusive one".

That's ALL that EVGA had in stock on their web page just now.

3 or 4 models TOTAL across all 4 types of GPU out of 49 models they have in that range.

Worse they have yet to ship my gear ordered on the 26th of dec    9 day delay = unacceptable

Part of that would have been their "holiday" schedual.
Were they even open on the 26'th?

904  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: EWBF's CUDA Zcash miner on: January 05, 2018, 08:59:21 PM
Any reason to use this over dstm miner which is faster?

dstm is not always faster.

Wattman isn't the worst junk softtware in the world - it's just massively inferior to Afterburner and quite a bit less capable when it comes to things like setting fan profiles, and the INTERFACE is very badly done and anti-intuitive.

It's nowhere near as bad as the Unusable Interface on Windows 8, for example....

906  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: r9 380 4Gb & r9 390 8GB on: January 05, 2018, 08:55:49 PM
I would anticipate a R9 390 eating 250-300 watts if you push it for max hashrate.
Might get it under 200 with good undervolting if you're willing to not push QUITE as hard.

907  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New RX580 only pulling 24Mh/s while old R9 390 managing 20Mh/s-help? on: January 05, 2018, 08:53:43 PM
Nicehash "reported hashrate" over anything less than the 12 hour average should be ignored - due the nature of their service, you're going to see some CRAZY HUGH short-term swings on reported hashrate.

908  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Current best powered risers available? on: January 05, 2018, 08:50:33 PM
The case of the PS is isolated - doesn't matter if you let it ground or not.

909  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Avalon Quality vs Antminer Quality on: January 05, 2018, 08:49:51 PM
You could probably do that - if you don't mind voiding their joke of a warrenttee.

910  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Gridcoin (GRC) - first coin utilizing BOINC - Official Thread on: January 05, 2018, 08:48:35 PM
I've been using older / outdated machines to do research

The majority of my BOINC effort is on GPUs that are 3+ generations old.
I DID have my Vega pointed at Moo for a bit, but it's earning Monero right now 'cause the profitability was TOO high to pass up.

Time of Day is usually layered ON TOP of tier plans.

912  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Volta on: January 05, 2018, 08:44:58 PM
It would be worth waiting *IF* there was any probability at all of a Volta announcement at CES - but since that probability is basically ZERO....
913  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: AMD Radeon Pro WX 4100 on: January 04, 2018, 11:11:04 PM
The WX series cards are overpriced, lower clocked, IDENTICAL GPU variants on the RX series.
Total waste of $$$ even at current RX-series pricing.

They have poor cooling compared to RX-series cards due to the single-slot width design (which is WHY they get clocked lower).

914  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Can I mine two different altcoins on one rig? on: January 04, 2018, 11:08:03 PM
Don't try mining Cryptonight AND Ethash on the same GPU since both algorithms are very "memory hard".
You'll see very poor hashrates on both sides of that idea.

915  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: r9 380 4Gb & r9 390 8GB on: January 04, 2018, 11:05:43 PM
R9 390 is a legitimate 30 Mhash/sec ballpark card on ETH with overclocking and undervolting.

Should do a bit better than my R9 290 cards since it has faster memory that should be able to clock higher, and MINE still do over 29 Mhash/sec.

R9 380 is probably better off on something like ZEC, they are one small step DOWN on the GPU but a hair better on the memory than my R9 280x cards that stressed to get to 14 Mhash/sec on ETH a year ago but can pull close to 300 sol/s on ZEC.

916  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Recommend me a cheap USB Miner on: January 04, 2018, 11:01:08 PM
The Moonlander 2 is the ONLY USB-based miner that has a prayer of achieving ROI at this point - and if your electric cost is high, it's probably the only PROFITABLE USB-based miner.

Everything else is at least 1 generation outdated and not going to even break even unless you have SUPER cheap electric - and very low probability of ever achieving ROI on anything else.

917  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: narrow height 1080ti or 1080 cards (1 to 1.5x vs 2x height)? on: January 04, 2018, 10:58:06 PM
For the 1080 or 1080 ti, about your only options to run 4 cards on the MB on that MB is to use hybrid or water-cooled cards, if you want decent cooling.

Even a 1080 running at "efficient" settings around 105 watt ballpark with AIR cooling is going to have heat issues when the cards are crammed in that close.

You also need a case specifically designed to have "8 slots" in the back for GPU slots, or you won't be able to run any sort of a double-slot card in your Slot 4 at all.

918  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: CPU Mines more than GPU on: January 04, 2018, 10:51:55 PM
You are using VERY outdated software - try running Stak-XMR or Cast instead.
That card should be cabable of more like 200 to perhaps 300 ballpark.

1050 ti won't be a lot higher hashrate, but it WILL soak a lot less power.

919  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: OLD ASIC MINER on: January 04, 2018, 10:44:06 PM
That's a SHA256 miner, Scrypt ASIC in the CURRENT generation are still measured in MHash/sec not GHash/sec

Unless you have free electric, or use it as a "cold days space heater", I'd not bother running the thing as it will LOSE money.

920  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New RX580 only pulling 24Mh/s while old R9 390 managing 20Mh/s-help? on: January 04, 2018, 10:42:46 PM
I'm more inclined to wonder why your R9 390 had such LOW hashrate.

Those should be able to pull well over 25 Mhash/sec on ETH and more likely close to 30.

24 Mhash for a non-BIOS-modded RX 470/480/570/580 card is quite good.
