The lunatics win the battle by sheer persistence of ignorance, but they've already lost the war.

It is nice to know that calculating an average is an intractable problem.   <eyeroll>

First year engineering physics will also give you enough to understand the basic underlying principle of global warming, but you guys don't really want to hear that.

What is the average temperature of planet Earth? I admit, I am a lunatic and do not know much about anything. but I know you should know the answer.
You want to include the core of the planet?  The atmosphere out to 100km?  Or something like the average temperature of the land mass 6' above the ground?  Or include temperatures 6' above the oceans?

That's at LEAST a six beer problem there.

I was hoping him/her/it to ask Siri on his iPhone...

I may have misused black swan slightly, but it fits close and was easy to type. Explaining things in depth to a lunatic not interested in the truth brings about a need for brevity.

You prepare for things that are likely to happen.  The smaller the chance, the less you prepare.  I don't think Taleb would disagree with that.  Nor would any rational person.

That is why it is important to realize it is man made - because it happening and not some miniscule chance of happening like the other silliness listed.

Ice ages happen every 1-10k years from what I read.  Global warming has been happening on a scale of 100 years and we're just now getting to the point where things are going to continue to be changing.  Bringing in ice-ages just dilutes the issue.  There is a magnitude of order difference in time frames easily, and they're still measure in 100s of generations, not 5.  Lets bring it up though to cloud the issue.

We would survive EMP easily.  Not even relevant.

I like how the one metric that everyone could see as being a useful metric is invalid because it clearly shows the lunacy of your average denier.  Oh average temperatures ?  Hogwash!  Scientifically impossible to measure with any accuracy !  Thermometers ?  Thats old technology!  Not relevant here because the world is not the same in every place !

(Duh, thats why it is an average)

Please, please, ignore the raving lunatic in the corner.  Much like I should.  Reddit did the right thing.  A stupid man with a little bit of education can be a dangerous thing..... and in the end... they're still wrong.

Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744) wrote 'An Essay on Criticism' in 1709. In it he wrote:
"A little learning is a dangerous thing; drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again."
The modern meaning translates to mean that people with a small amount of knowledge often think that they have more 'expertise' than they really do. Sometimes, when this perceived 'expertise' translates into action, it can result in unpredictable, or even tragic consequences.

That is why it is important for people like you to forbid people who do not believe what you believe to speak up...

Health care’s hidden tax on Main Street

[...]
To add insult to injury, a hidden tax within the law is coming to light that threatens the very livelihood of thousands of U.S. businesses and millions of American workers. Known as the health insurance tax or HIT, this is a new discriminatory tax on small businesses and their employees that will raise the premiums by as much as $500 per policy per year.

Main Street enterprises are now being faced with the choice of eating the costs, passing it on to their employees, ending coverage altogether or other unexpected decisions impacting their operations and workers.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that the cost of the tax is only going to grow over time – collecting an estimated $145 billion from small businesses in the first ten years alone and making it that much harder for business owners to prepare for the future.

Ironically, during one of the ACA’s many back door deals, large corporations and unions received a carve-out from the HIT, leaving the full burden of the tax to fall on the fully-insured marketplace, where nearly 90 percent of small businesses, their employees and the self-employed purchase their insurance.

North Carolina Couple’s Premiums Double Due To Lack Of Young Enrollees In Obamacare

A North Carolina couple’s health insurance costs have doubled due to the lack of young enrollees in Obamacare.

A certain percentage of young enrollees is needed to offset the higher costs of treatments that older enrollees need. The Obama Administration failed to reach their goal of enrolling 50 percent of people 34 years and younger. Only 32 percent of Obamacare enrollees are young Americans, leaving other Americans’ insurance rates to see a huge hike.

“We pay $998.70 for two people,” Amanda LaRoque told WTVD. Her and her husband own their own business and buy their own health insurance. She is angry at the sudden premium increase by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina.

“From the whole beginning when they introduced the Affordable Care Act, they said if they didn’t get enough young people, there was a good possibility it was going to go up,” LaRoque said.

Premiums could increase once again in 2015. LaRoque and her husband say they don’t think they can endure another price hike.

I didnt know there was any racism in the tea party, use to think they would actually make things worse then help any situation

When you let yourself to be defined by the people who loathe you then thing can get worse  in the mainstream media for what you represent. Life is not easy. You just need to keep fighting for what you believe.

Frankly, I don't think you know what you are talking about, either on droughts, global warming or religion.  You seem to think that anecdotal evidence (droughts) have greater attribution, but show no evidence and of course cannot.  You are against deniers, but I wager you can't even define what a denier is.  And then you rant on religion and faith.  Then you suggest something that's quite astonishing, "faith in science."

Well I'd like to see a clear, concise definition of denier.

We'll deal with the absolute lack of a need for faith in science later.

Frankly, you should look at context.  I was responding to anecdotal evidence with more anecdotal evidence.  Nothing more.

The fact that you don't see this, and use it as a reason to discredit me shows your overwhelming biases.  You fall into one of the categories that, frankly, are not worth having a discussion with.  You have just demonstrated you are not interested in truth.

Denier would be someone that denies that the Earth is warming up (using average global temperatures) due to man made reasons.

Really, is it that hard to go study the radiation and how different gasses absorb it ?  Convince yourself.  I don't think you guys even try to understand the basic principles behind it but oh damn you're experts.

No more responses from me.  Reddit has it right.  Disregard to babbling loonies in the corner and lets get on with progress if we are to have any hope.

I would have not brought religion up, but religion is a place where a lot of people go for morality and ethics.  Churches are ignoring global warming, so people continue on shitting on the future of their kids.

I respect your position even if you believe I am not worth responding, being somewhat underneath you or something...  Smiley

It's a GAME people.

Get over it!

For the gay lobby, even the games can be a tool for propaganda spreading, especially if it is played by children in their pre-teens. Political correctness has grown too much in the Western World. And example is here:

What next? May be not attending a gay pride parade will be called homophobic.

You're not far off for sure!

I was once called homophobic because I told a guy I had no interest in seeing the movie "Brokeback Mountain".

Haha... I have yet to see that movie  Grin Grin

What was the improper honor?

Just imagine "Black Hawk Down" + the  movie "300", but with only 2 guys dying while pushing back many many bad people, with ZERO rescue mission from the US, fighting for many hours.

I hope some famous movie director will make them the immortals they deserve to become...

House Democratic leaders have been unstinting in their criticism of the select committee established this week to investigate the aftermath of the 2012 attack on an American compound in Benghazi, Libya. Now they are facing a touch choice about whether to join it, cautiously weighing which strategy would be riskier politically and whether their instinct to boycott the select committee might just give it more power in the end.
Democratic leaders have called the new committee “a political ploy,” a “stunt,” a “sham,” a “waste of taxpayer dollars” and, in the words of White House spokesman Jay Carney, “a blatantly political and partisan effort.” This week, two arms of the party, the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, launched a coordinated messaging blitz to undermine the committee and cast Republicans as political opportunists who have established the select committee only because of their interest in raising money and exciting the GOP base before the 2014 midterm elections.
Either way, this could be major trouble for Hillary as it'll damage her leadership credibility and perhaps, show her and her staff's willingness to hang our peeps out to dry in a very troubled area. Naturally, the dems already have their spin terms lined up. After all, according to Hillary, "What difference does it make?"

While the corpses was at her feet she was lying to the face of the family members. Then they put a dude for many months in jail for no reason at all...

So you are saying shutting people who do not believe what you believe is bad then?

Not sure what you are trying to say, but the answer is probably in between something.

I'm all for arguing etc, but there becomes a point in time when you figure out who you are arguing with has motives that are not purely for the purpose of seeking the truth.  That or they are arguments coming from people who will not abide by the same basic rules of logic that I do and expect.

We do not need to debate that the world is round and not flat anymore.  If someone persists with that silliness I am all for kicking them out of a forum because it serves no point.

There are distinctions in life.

Ok. So anyone who still does not accept the proofs of human made global warming needs to stop believing the Earth is flat, because the science has been settled at more than 90% of accuracy by every "real scientists". Every scientific models are predicting exactly the reality we observe everyday from satellite data, perfectly matching the computer models for the hundred of years to come.

Is this what I should understand from you?

Discriminate. It is wise.

dis·crim·i·nate
disˈkriməˌnāt/
verb
verb: discriminate; 3rd person present: discriminates; past tense: discriminated; past participle: discriminated; gerund or present participle: discriminating

    1.
    recognize a distinction; differentiate.
    2.
make an unjust or prejudicial distinction in the treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, sex, or age.

The 2nd definition is a mass-mania of collectivism that will enslave and remove your ability to function properly in reality. See my comments in the first pages of the Dark Enlightenment thread. For example, females are not as analytical as men. Blacks on average have lower IQs and less work ethic. Filipinos can't do any mental activity alone, they require group activity. Etc..

Discrimination is a useful tool.

You have no rights. The only rights are those you can personally defend.

I am so fucking tired of the collectivism that is sweeping our globe.

Time for me to bug out.

Y'all carry on to the end game of it.

Don't give up hope! Smiley

9038  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Reddit’s science forum banned climate deniers. on: May 09, 2014, 09:47:58 PM
There are all sorts of lesser environmental issues that have absolutely nothing to do with global warming.

This is an issue that is beyond science, yet the deniers still want to hide behind the aegis of their version of "science".

Part of the problem is this idea of "faith" that is taught by religions.  When people are taught to have faith it is all great and such, but then they also have faith in things like science being able to fix this problem without society taking serious corrective action immediately.

Blind faith is the equivalent of not thinking.  That is what Christianity and religions all around the world teach us.  How to not think.

So you are saying shutting people who do not believe what you believe is bad then?

I think, if this planet is warming up...then if you down to the panama canal...check to see if the water level on each lock has changed any since it was built.  We live on a dynamic planet with dynamic weather patterns that are on cycles.  How many ice ages have we had?  I suppose your going to blame that on man too!  I dont pretend that pollution isnt bad, but their isnt much I can do about china.  I do my part, I make EVERY effort that what i buy doesnt come from china.

Your avatar animation is very distracting. I need to know everything about her, links, etc....

Regarding how insane some decisions are taken without any logical steps, California pushed hard to ban plastic bags. I hate plastic bags flying in my trees across. So that would make sense for everyone. Yet because no enterprises were created to replace those bags with biodegradable ones, their replacement is coming from almost across the world, from China... Go Green!
