Someone should apply to their job postings. I would do it, but I can't even bullshit tech crap, let alone sound like I really know it.

I think it's a really cool idea, but how much would the addition of holograms add to the price? I feel like the allure of cracking open the piggy bank, so to speak, is part of the appeal of the coins. I just think that it would make new users, particularly those who aren't too tech-savvy, feel like hackers and pique their interest some more.
943  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5970 VRM Cooling Solutions on: November 16, 2011, 01:07:44 AM
The heatsink fins are bent at the very top, perhaps in order to channel airflow through the fins and out the exhaust. While I could just strap a few 120mm fans across the top of the card a la Arctic Cooling's 5970 HSF, what I estimate would be the most effective way to cool the heatsink would be to channel the airflow of a single 120mm fan down through the fins, possibly cutting out a makeshift duct out of cardboard to adapt the fan down to the opening of the heatsink. More updates to follow.
looking at the Arctic Cooling's 5970 HSF, the fins are vertical not horizontal so when the 120mm fans blows on it teh hot air escapes top and bottom.

the stock heatsink is vertical so adding more fans wouldn't help that much.
adding a 120mm fans and making a makeshift duct for it i think would be the simplest & best option.

I don't think you will be able to get any decent flow with 120mm fans. They aren't pressure fans, so they will more than likely just spin in place instead of pushing air through the ducting. The reason they use those squirrel cage fans is because they can handle the backpressure of forcing air through that style of heatsink.

Ok so here is the email I received regarding info on the 54 GH/s box:

"The BitForce Rig Box product will cost about 80% of the per mh/s cost established with the pricing of the BitForce SHA256 Single.  The standard post pre-order price of the Single is $599 ( thought it was $500 LOL ) for 1,050 mh/s (1.2 gh/s), or roughly 60 cents per mh/s.  At 80%, the Rig Box comes in at roughly 50 cents per mh/s.  Although the technology is the same, clustering allows for additional efficiency opportunities which can't be realized in the stand alone single.TOTAL BS  Rig Boxes are about $25,000 The scam is not big enough for you BFL ? each with 54 gh/s performance.  They don't come in smaller flavors. Well obviously you do not want to scam for less - efficiency is king, even in scamming Smiley "

Take it as you will.

Don't know about you but this email above 99% convinces me this is a total scam.
Surely you can explain why you think this instead of simply calling them scammers.

And you guys wonder why BFL doesn't want to participate in this thread...

See pages one through thirty-two.

They have emailed me saying that the Rig Box has additional performance improvements, being 32 clustered boards instead of 1 single, that enable it to reach 54 GH/s.

Does that make sense to you?

Do 32 GPU have 54x the performance of 1 GPU?
Do 32 CPU have 54x the perofrmance of 1 GPU?

If 1 board was capable of 1.7GH wouldn't it make sense to just apply those magical unicorn optimization and make the single board 1.7GH too.  They could sell it for 70% more right?  Unless 70% higher revenue per sale is a bad thing.

Yes it makes sense that 32 specialized boards can run together and achieve improvements you wouldn't otherwise get with a single board.

You are going to need to explain that a little further.

Yes they do.. but:

mtgox orders only takes place if there is no opposing order available to fill it at the time. And if it is it's done immediately.

I tested this during zero volume periods, try it out if you buy a bitcoin there it takes place a few seconds later if nobody bets against you at the same time. I've tried that with different values so I'm pretty confident that it works this way

So you don't think there is any way that someone with access to A LOT of coins would misuse them for profit? Worst case scenario, he disappears, best case scenario, he is a 17 year old baller. Atlas - you jelly?

I haven't said that, you're right bitcoin is a scammers wet dream.. Anonymity, Privacy, non-reversibility, outside the reach of the legal system... stranger things have happend.

I just think, Occams Razor applies - Someone who had alot of coins left from the beginning was kicking the market for fun and potential profit.

I whole-heartedly agree, but as I said, the FIRST thing to pop into my head was how many were gonna get zhoutonged in the bouncing.

Wich additional questions regarding the upcoming Bitforce Box and Rigbox would be interesting for you ?

I have a big one...how does 2+2=5? What system would see a 70% increase in performance through repackaging? What will the price points be on the units? Why won't they let the guy that lives across the street come and see one in action? I doubt his goal is industrial espionage, and I am sure he is happy to sign an NDA (as long as he is allowed to tell us if it actually works) to reassure them.

So one company is SCI  http://www.sciengines.com

They use high numbers of standard FPGA's.

Some new field they apply fore are also Scientific highly paralled computing.

I have to look up the other companys name, but i guess SCI is the major one.

'fore' is a nautical term referring to the front of a vessel (like fore and aft)...not that it really matters

Or what you yell when your golf ball is about to hit someone!

Which is kind of funny...you yell 'Fore!' to get someone to look in front of them, but odds are you are smacking golf balls at someone with their back to you...unless you are like me and putting it in the next fairway on half your shots.

The only suspect I know of belonging to our alt-currency funhouse who could pull this is our beloved Artforz  Roll Eyes

What about zhoutong with his Bitcoinica?

I am actually amazed there hasn't been more speculation on that. It was one of the first things that popped into my head: 'wow, bitcoinica is making a fucking killing off this; i wonder if they had a hand in it.'

This isn't grammar trolling, just a friendly correction; 'for' is the word you are looking for, 'fore' is a nautical term referring to the front of a vessel (like fore and aft)...not that it really matters...I just want to see more of these crazy code-breaking machines!

so they can also be used to mine say SolidCoin not only Bitcoin etc. )

There's a fundamental misunderstanding here about how and why FPGAs are so good for Bitcoin mining that I don't even have the time to begin addressing, but I'll say this much: Only two algorithms have been chosen thus far for mining Bitcoin and its associated forks: SHA256 and sCrypt. sCrypt is used for "CPU friendly" currencies and is CPU friendly explicitly because it uses more RAM than is typically available in on-chip cache for both GPUs and FPGAs, but not more than is typically available in L1/L2 cache on your CPU. FPGAs are a poor choice for sCrypt mining for the same reason that GPUs are: they require too much on-chip cache.

That said, if the BFL boxes turn out not to be vaporware there's only three options for what's inside: an FPGA, an ASIC or some kind of existing SHA256 hardware. In all cases but FPGA the device will likely only be good for the one purpose of its design. Even if they are FPGAs it's unlikely you'll be able to accelerate sCrypt with them since sCrypt was explicitly built to avoid such acceleration.

Says it has upgradable firmware and that they will be shipping in waves as they finish the fw for each application.

That's not saying I believe it's real...
953  Economy / Speculation / Re: Manipulator manipulating on an unprecedented level on: November 15, 2011, 07:34:52 PM
Why has no one proposed Dwolla's big release in businessweek as a possible motivator for the sell?

It seems logical: large startup comes out and says they are going to slay credit cards, and they actually have the infrastructure to do it. Kind of steals bitcoin's thunder, don't you think?
954  Economy / Speculation / Re: Someone just took a gigantic dump. on: November 15, 2011, 07:29:11 PM
Did you notice the 20,000 bitcoins being sold in one shot. This was probably why the manipulator pulled out at this point.

20.000 bitcoins are like 60k USD. Don't forget, Christmas is coming and somebody wants to buy gifts.
This guy must have alot of relatives  Grin

I am about 80% sure that this guy is none other than our venerable and respected honorable member, BitcoinExpress, cashing out and leaving the rest of us fools holding the bag. Well done mate, you had us good !!!

Have people totally forgotten about when he was bragging for weeks about making like, 100btc off of those stupid fucking alt-chains? That is not the move of a man with 20k.

+/- 10% is one thing +/- 70% is another.

It seems illogical that they would design multiple different boards with different FPGA given how small the market is.   The "single" would be fine for use in a cluster, maybe having different connectors, and communication methods but roughly the same design.  Having a different board makes little sense.  I mean 1.05GH using 2 FPGA for one product and then 1.7GH per board for the second product.

If the rig consisted of similar dual FPGA designs one could expect it to be roughly 1.05 * 32 = 33.6GH/s.  Even +10% would be 36.96GH which makes the 54.4 number illogical.  Not the first thing w/ this company.
It may be that the single is capable of performing 1.7 GH/s, when in a properly efficient case.  In that little box with the 80mm fan and tiny heat sink, and small power requirement, it may only be capable of 1.05.  The same unit in a properly vented, higher powered case it may be able to reach 1.7.  Like I said high risk speculation on my part.

In any case I am hoping we'll have a better grasp of the situation in 2 or 3 weeks.  Let's see.

You are far too optimistic. Better cooling will not cause a 70% leap in efficiency.

What? I was in a meeting. You still crushing on Atlas? Just confess already...

Matthew, are you secretly Bruce Wagner, who having fled from the US due to various legal complications, is now trying to lure Atlas, a minor, to your love nest in Bangkok?
