9401  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Too scared to go for altcoins? on: February 12, 2020, 08:33:43 AM
I think the best worse altcoins you can invest on in crypto space are bitcoin forks

There, I've fixed it.
Bitcoin forks are speculative coins with no real added value and sooner or later you can face bad surprises, especially if you choose to HOLD.
If you want to go into altcoins, choose proper coins with proper development and good ideas. For example my small investment into Monero has paid off until now.
9402  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bulgaria's government is top countries of the world for owning the most bitcoin on: February 12, 2020, 08:06:19 AM
they just auction them off and get their shitty fiat, I'm sure Bulgaria will do the same if they still have them and have the private keys/ passwords.

Of course. Nobody would expect a country start day trading Bitcoin (maybe excepting N Korea!). That "selling" part was a badly chosen word there.

My main point was that I expect that some (if not all) of those "Bulgarian government owned" coins may be already missing and maybe even converted to fiat long ago.
9403  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bulgaria's government is top countries of the world for owning the most bitcoin on: February 12, 2020, 06:51:11 AM
Bulgaria is instead playing smart and likely has no intention of selling anytime soon.

I don't agree with this and I somehow think that something is very fishy. Bulgaria had quite big deficit in 2019. And I don't see it as a very rich country.
I think that if they would have known what to do, they would have been already selling those funds in a way or another.
I believe that they don't have the laws for monetizing those coins. And I believe that some individuals there may have been stashing away some of those coins too, so when the legislation will exist they'll find out that the coins are missing.

Cold storage is not so difficult to use anymore for the ones with basic computer skills, but it's still underused.
I'm not sure how basic my computer skills is but this is something that I would also like to know.

You'll need 2 USB sticks and your computer/laptop. I'll assume you have the seed written onto paper and you know if your address starts with 1, 3 or bc1.

1. Burn Tails OS onto stick 1. All you need is explained on https://tails.boum.org/

Tails OS has Electrum on it. It's a bit overkill to use it since any live OS would do, but this one is already set up.
I won't discuss about persistent storage either, I'll consider that more advanced than the current purpose. Yes, this means that you'll enter the seed on every run of Tails, but if you make payments more often you better buy a hardware wallet.

2. Make sure your computer is not connected to internet (this means: unplug the cable if you have wired internet; if you're wireless you're good).

3. Boot from stick 1 into Tails OS, start Electrum, enter the seed for your wallet.

4. From Electrum tutorial read how to get the master public key. Plug in stick 2 and copy the master public key into a text file onto stick 2.

5. Shut down, remove both sticks, start computer into your normal OS. Start Electrum there and create a new watch only wallet based on the master public key from stick 2 (see the same Electrum tutorial)

And you are set.
Keep in mind that every time, before you boot from stick 1 you have to check that you have the internet unplugged.

When you want to spend, create the transaction in Electrum on your main computer from the watch only wallet, save it to stick 2, boot into Tails OS (and start Electrum, enter seed, load tx from stick 2), sign that transaction and save it signed to stick 2, boot again to the main computer, load up the signed transaction and broadcast it. All it's explained with images in the same page of Electrum docs.

So all you need to know is to follow pretty well explained steps (on Tails OS and Electrum doc pages), boot from USB where necessary and work with USB sticks.
9405  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is digital gold good? on: February 11, 2020, 10:14:01 AM
For me digital gold is same like coins but in different name

Its price fluctuation is supposed to be the gold's fluctuation, unlike free market (as in Bitcoin) or stable against USD (as in USDT and such). That's pretty much the only difference from other coins.
9406  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Error Signing transaction failed! & Error: Transaction creation failed! on: February 11, 2020, 03:28:27 AM
You should wait until the synchronization ends. How could the wallet know you didn't spend those coins already if it's not synchronized?

edit: Alternatively you can import the relevant keys into Electrum and spend right away, but I don't have a computer at hand now for the steps and it's riskier (you expose the private keys)
9407  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Hardware wallet really secure enough? on: February 10, 2020, 02:06:30 PM
So, how can we feel 100% safe in hardware wallet?

Hardware wallets are not the most secure option. They're the best mix between security and convenience. And as said, most problems they have are related to physical access to them, which should not happen.
I still believe that hardware wallets should be used for every day expenses and the "HODL" funds should stay somewhere completely offline.
Cold storage is not so difficult to use anymore for the ones with basic computer skills, but it's still underused.
9408  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Hackers and their use of mixing services on: February 10, 2020, 01:47:07 PM
Haha, that's a very diplomatic way of saying that I'm a cynical old fart. Cheesy

LOL! No, I didn't meant that. It'll mean that I'm also one.

and prove to a court that they have no logs which they can hand over

Interesting approach! Just that'll anger Big Brother and we're back to square one: the discussions about extinction  Smiley
9409  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Hackers and their use of mixing services on: February 10, 2020, 01:19:36 PM
London Police are rolling out mass surveillance and facial recognition

I was talking about this:
The European Union is considering banning facial recognition technology in public areas for up to five years, to give it time to work out how to prevent abuses

But overall you're right. There's a high degree of uncertainty of what will politicians decide.
I won't continue on this direction since we are on the same page (with tiny bit different levels of "optimism") and I don't want to go too much off topic.

I can hope that mixers and privacy coins will not be harmed too soon.
At least the mixers can easily survive by handing over logs if asked with a warrant.
9410  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Which is easier, stop when you are winning or stop when you are losing? on: February 10, 2020, 10:36:43 AM
For me it's clearly easier to stop when losing. At some point the funds are gone and the cooldown period until I'd transfer the money into the casino may help me think more clear and leave it. In my case I usually don't replenish at all.
If that doesn't work for other, there may be addiction and how big that is depends on how many times he tries to replenish.

I've almost never stopped directly at winning. Even in the good days, I had to lose once or twice after a big win streak to decide my luck has ended and I better stop.
9411  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Hackers and their use of mixing services on: February 10, 2020, 10:24:40 AM
All in all, wasn't also Bitcoin "advertised" by media as drug money and so on? But time has shown that they are wrong.
I've always been a fan of Andreas Antonopoulos' response to the argument that bitcoin is used to buy drugs, which is essentially along these lines: Drugs are the second most traded commodity in the world, after food. The entire definition of money is that it can be traded for goods and services. If you can't buy the second most widely traded good in the world, then what you have isn't actually money.

Yes, it's a very nice and common sense explanation he made, but most don't care / ignore it.
The Bitcoin-as-drug-money ad was trying to make people believe that buying drugs on darknet is the only use for Bitcoin.

I don't like people to look into my pockets and Bitcoin allows that too easy. Mixers fix that. Monero also fixes that. Is that illegal, I don't feel so.
Not at the moment, but I can see a future where it is. Governments the world over are prying more and more in to the lives of their citizens. Wikileaks, Snowden, etc. have shown the world that mass surveillance is commonplace. William Barr and other high ranking officials keep pressuring companies like Facebook to build backdoors in to WhatsApp and similar apps to allow the government to snoop on encrypted messages. Governments regularly request data from Google, Apple, Microsoft, health insurance companies, etc., who hand it over in the vast majority of cases. Surveillance states are growing in both number and reach, and it won't be long before governments start using blockchain analysis to ascertain exactly how much bitcoin everyone is holding, if they haven't started already.

That would be a sad future if it'll happen. I hope it won't ever happen.
The fact that they try to keep everything under surveillance is not new and the phenomenon is expanding at a very fast rate, although in some cases common sense starts to prevail (CMIIW, but I think that public face recognition postponed in Europe until the software gets more mature and harder to be abused).
ToR is not illegal. So I can hope that Monero will also not become illegal. It's just a clever software after all.

(There's also a very odd reverse-psychology explanation: they'll always allow into existence some tools that - among other features - allow illegal operations too to justify the existence of the law enforcement agencies and their funding  Cheesy )
9412  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Blockchain.info Wallet I.D on: February 10, 2020, 09:38:15 AM
Hi, just trying to get back into my old blockchain.info wallet
I have the public address which is 1A7o8maUg17eouBGuD9vVLJmZEPnprhEFm

But can't remember the Wallet I.D or the email I used when creating the account all that time ago.
When I try to login it says something about wrong format, something about w.i.f.format ?

Any ideas?

Cheers.

First of all, according to the blockchain explorer, the wallet is empty. So it may be less hassle to just make another wallet.
I'd recommend a proper wallet, not website, and I'd recommend next time you keep safe (offline) your wallet seed.

Now, WIF means wallet import format, it's about the private key of your wallet. If you have the private key you can import your address in any wallet, just keep it safe (and don't write it here).
9413  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 10, 2020, 08:49:19 AM
Relax people, just a small pit stop/profit taken before the next pump.

Is anyone stressed? I thought that the unofficial mottos are "It's fine" and "HODL & chill".  Grin
If it would fall under 9000 I may be a bit uneasy, but for now the numbers still look good.
9414  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is 12K USD is the next target? on: February 10, 2020, 08:45:22 AM
By the time im typing this, Bitcoin is at exactly $9,938.23.
Nevertheless, we will be seeing more than $12,000 in a few months now.

Yup, the first step is not 12k. The first step is securing 10k. We can talk after 12k if we don't fail to secure the actual gains.

And to OP: please stop dreaming of unrealistic bubbles every time Bitcoin rises a little bit. Just HODL and chill.
9415  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Hackers and their use of mixing services on: February 10, 2020, 08:41:04 AM
Regarding mixers and exchanges, you rightly said both provide a service, both are businesses. Both of them have been used to accommodate the transfer of stolen coins or those gained from illegal or maybe illicit sources. Whereas some exchanges might pull the KYC and investigation card, mixers do not do that.

The fact they can do that will never imply that they will do that, indeed.

I recall a few weeks ago certain users were openly stating they were happy to display either the Yobit x10 banner because they saw no difference between Yobit and mixers and argued anybody showing a mixer in their signature should be getting the same treatment as those showing a Yobit or x10 banner.

I use to believe that the community, this community, as a whole, knows better. And the fact that Yobit banners are usually not welcome is a result of many things, not only the way they are running their business (and sorry, but whoever still believes in ICO fairy tales may deserve their fate).
Since there's freedom of speech, users with those banners may be tolerated, but in some cases having that banner in the history may harm the reputation, no matter how they convince themselves it's ok to wear the culprit banners.

Obviously the two do not correlate but that was the false justification put forward saying mixers were almost exclusively used for illegal activity. Moving forward, there is no doubt some users have taken advantage of the anonymity mixers (claim to) provide in order to hide some sort of criminality but as was pointed put in the previous post, the estimated figure currently stands at around 8% and that is fairly low considering the reputation some users are trying to paint about mixers in general.

For me the ethical concern surrounding mixers in the argument of illicit activity versus general users sending their funds from their exchanges direct to mixers in order to make their holdings effectively unknown after they are moved from any centralised exchange - is a non-argument. Mixers are providing a service for users that do not want anybody to know how much crypto they hold, if a tiny minority of users take advantage of that service and use it for illegal activity then there is not much that can be done at this moment in time.

I am a fan of Monero, so I know very well what you mean. Some things can be used for illegal activities and will be used for illegal activities (and I keep telling that US dollar bills fall in the same category), but that doesn't make them automatically bad, illegal or fair to be presented as tools for criminals.
I don't like people to look into my pockets and Bitcoin allows that too easy. Mixers fix that. Monero also fixes that. Is that illegal, I don't feel so.
Could the mixers "behave" better? Maybe. It may also be up to the centralized exchanges and big holders to approach them with some interesting proposals.

All in all, wasn't also Bitcoin "advertised" by media as drug money and so on? But time has shown that they are wrong. Haters are always gonna hate.

Aha, in sfarsit informatii. Multumesc.
Da, deci cam 1-2 lei pe luna, sa inteleg... Nu e prea mare lucru, dar na, cat timp e gratis, de ce nu? Si poate o mai si creste.
9417  Economy / Services / Re: (Postponed, consider my apology) EuroGamblers Signature Campaign is postponed on: February 09, 2020, 09:54:48 AM
It seems team is now again thinking launching the project without me, they have postponed the launch. They indirectly kicked me out of the team.
This is a lesson for me. I will not launch a campaign without being 100% confirmed.
Once again, I am apolozise to everyone.

Every kick in a butt is a step forward. No real harm was done and it was a good lesson for you and for the ones hoping for the campaign, whether a join request was made or not.
Quite sad ending because their famous "20 posts in gambling" was quite an advertising in the forum, which was kinda nullified by their lack of steadiness.
9418  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bitcoin withdrawal fee is damn high in exchanges! on: February 09, 2020, 09:41:49 AM
Why are they asking this high fee?

Because they can. Because many don't care if they work with very high amounts. Because if they convince you keep your money there just to avoid paying the fees, they may benefit of it (their keys, their coins!).
What you can do:
* pick another exchange https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5079048.0
* if possible and suits you, withdraw the lower fee altcoins, there's quite a list
* keep the money at the exchanges until there will be more to withdraw (not the best choice)
9419  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-02-08] Police Shuts Down Bitcoin Mine Over Coronavirus on: February 09, 2020, 09:30:42 AM
They even said in the article that there were no new arrivals to the mine. They were locked up living inside the entire time the virus was active.

I think that the authorities simply didn't have a "procedure" for the cases the employees can stay safely in the facility for months. Or didn't believe the claims of the owners.
9420  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Should I make a legacy, segwit or native segwit wallet? (Electrum) on: February 09, 2020, 09:12:41 AM
Recently I set up an electrum wallet using legacy addresses, because I thought selecting segwit would make a bech32 wallet. Now I'm questioning my choice since a incoming transaction I sent to the legacy address costed me a 28.8 satoshis/byte transaction fee. How much will I save if I make a segwit (3xxxxxx etc.) wallet? I know native bech32 segwit has even lower fees but I heard not everyone can send to that kind of address yet so I'm hesitant to create one.

I might transfer my funds to a segwit wallet if it turns out that everybody can receive fro a segwit address.

If you are not certain about what to do I think that 3* SegWit compatible wallet is the best choice.
No matter what wallet you choose, if you send towards an old 1* wallet you'll still pay bigger fee I think. And that's because of the nr of vbytes, not because of your choice of fee/vbyte.
But the problem I see is that you didn't check how crowded the mempool is. I think that your tx wouldn't have needed more than 2 sat/vbyte.

I don't remember Electrum have option to create SegWit (address with prefix 3)  though, unless you're creating 2FA, CMIIW.

It does.
I was wrong. You can create 3* wallet with Electrum only if you get the seed from somewhere else (IanColeman?) with "I already have a seed" and set in options it's Bip39 so you can select the derivation path.
