961  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin bubble starting to burst? on: June 14, 2014, 09:21:29 PM
Anyone have any predictions as to when the price will bounce back up?   Are we looking at a price drop for another few days before the bounce back?

It will probably fall in anticipation to the SR auction on the 27th. Once the auction is complete and after any winners of the auction sell their coins bitcoin will start rising again.
962  Economy / Speculation / Re: why the difference in price? on: June 14, 2014, 09:20:11 PM
Coinbase uses a number of factors to determine the price they will pay and offer for bitcoin.

The prices on exchanges (and indexs) are based on supply and demand.
963  Economy / Speculation / Re: We're not going anywhere, until the 51% question is answered on: June 14, 2014, 09:18:52 PM
Time for the 51% question to be answered?
https://blockchain.info/pools?timespan=24hrs
GHash.IO over 50%.

It does look scary. I do not understand why GHash.IO owners will not take some action to curb this? It is also against their interest, they are miners, why do they contribute to eroding trust in btc?

Ghash is very good at marketing and has likely attracted a lot of "hands off" type investors that want to look at the pretty numbers. Ghash also offers merged mining of other SHA coins, increasing the EV of mining with them a little bit.

Even if ghash were to control 51%+ of the network does not necessarily mean they will carry out an attack.
964  Economy / Speculation / Re: Yahoo now posting good Bitcoin news on its main portal on: June 14, 2014, 09:13:24 PM

LOL. They may not be knowledgable about Bitcoin now, but give them time and they will learn.

Regardless as long as they adapt it BTC will go to the moon Wink
965  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin listed on Yahoo Finance on: June 14, 2014, 09:12:20 PM
Shocked

Was also my reaction this is neat if I remember right and comes in second place for the Bitcoin news of the day ha-ha
Expedia won lol.
That said I am glad that Yahoo Finance is taking Bitcoin seriously enough to add its own ticker for it.

This comment summed it up
“This is literally the best news I’ve had all day, and the day is still young!” said one commenter. “Another nice stamp of approval,” said another.

Amazing to think its going by day now this might have been the news of the week a while back and a month before that.

And yet the price is going down a little bit : 607$ on Bitstamp atm

It looks like a really good time to buy bitcoins

The short term price of BTC any investment does not matter, it is the longer term price that can make or break people.

BTC being on the yahoo finance page will get more people to get interested in bitcoin and to use it
966  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC transfer with SMS and Email on: June 14, 2014, 08:58:38 PM
blockchain.info has an option to allow people to send via SMS and email. The recipient can claim their funds using a shared private key (shared between you and the recipient) to sweep funds to their blockchain wallet (they create one if they don't have one)
967  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Poll: I am addicted to BTC price checking. Please VOTE on: June 14, 2014, 08:57:14 PM
I don't know why I even check the prices so frequently because I am not day trading or selling any coins. I try to buy on the dips but lately Im just sticking to my holdings
Just because you're an addict, just like me.
I'm glad I found out with this poll I'm not alone.  Wink

There is a fine line between being addicted to something and something being a hobby
968  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It costs a lot to transfer BTC>USD USD>BTC on: June 14, 2014, 08:55:07 PM
If you had no reason to change btc to usd then this would not be an issue.

When more merchants start to accept bitcoin then you could simply use your bitcoin to purchase products that you would normally buy.
969  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Free BTC at MIT on: June 14, 2014, 08:53:41 PM
i think mit students are the least people in the world who need free money
I don't think that this is about free money. This is about spreading knowledge and essentially some coins.

The point of this experiment is not to give students money but rather get them interested in this new technology, to study it and to hopefully try to change technology for the better
970  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: gambling the biggest risk for bitcoin businesses on: June 14, 2014, 08:51:39 PM
restrictions on online gambling is almost completely unenforceable now with TOR and bitcoin.
It is very easy for the individual to side step the regulations.

.com .org .eu domains can be seized anytime.
How many use decentralized Namecoin domain ? I know it is not necessary now but better be prepared and explain advantages and how to enable these domains in your browser...

This is one huge advantage that NMC has over bitcoin.

I think the problem with decentralized name servers is that it could be a big stress on nodes when a nmc website is attempted to be accessed by a lot of people at the same time (not DDOS but normal traffic)
971  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why does bitcoin use public keys as pseudonyms? on: June 14, 2014, 08:49:26 PM
The advantages are that it makes it possible to verify that the sender of a TX truly controls the address that controls the coins. It prevents the double spending problem that other P2P payment methods have that are not centralized.
972  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Dark Wallet: The Excuse Regulators Needed on: June 14, 2014, 08:47:29 PM
There is no real borders in internet. At point when one country makes usage of bitcoin difficult we can always choose different one.

Dark wallet might get even banned and I wouldn't even care. It is not like we really need it that much.

Power of government in long run is limited, one way or another.

That is not entirely true. Governments can and often do work together to try to reach common goals.

There are many treaties that have been signed by the US that can essentially make much of the internet "assessable" in the terms you are referring to to the US government and it's regulators.
973  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sending money to people who don't want to be found? on: June 14, 2014, 08:45:35 PM
Have u tried btc-e.

I think the OP is referring to btc-e

BTC-e is an "active" exchange meaning that as of now they are allowing people to trade fiat for btc and to withdraw their fiat and btc.

With that being said who knows how long they will be around. This is why buying locally is so advantageous.
974  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "You should assume your IP address can be associated with you.." -Gavin Anderson on: June 14, 2014, 07:53:49 PM
There are a number of ways to mask where a TX originated from:

Tor
Public WiFi
Using blockchain to push a signed TX for you
running a full node and having a light client only connect to that node
975  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Decentralization is not the answer on: June 14, 2014, 07:48:25 PM
The bitcoin foundation is not decentralized, but is still needed. What decentralized social networks are you talking about?

I've seen someone posted about having one in the Projects section. The network won't be run by moderators, and also won't store ip addresses, which makes absolutely no sense, because if someone commits a crime(scamming, blackmailing, threats, etc etc), it will be even harder to catch them(assuming they don't use a proxy/TOR), and without moderators, the whole site would be in Chaos.

You are talking about a forum which is different then a currency or a P2P payment method.

A P2P currency can have a set of rules that can be enforced by the miners. The rules are very cut and dry and is obvious when a rule is being followed or not.

A forum can (and should) have rules, however when people are discussing various topics judgment needs to be made to determine if a rule is being broken or not. If the community feels like the rules are not being followed they could easily leave the forum as the forum itself has little value to it's members.
976  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ask Amazon for Bitcoin Payments on: June 14, 2014, 07:44:15 PM
I doubt my individual opinion would matter much to Amazon - even with their good customer support. I personally believe that if adoption of BTC as a payment method for a goods/services by any of the tech giants becomes a likelihood (rather than just a hope) Amazon will rush to implement it aiming not to be left behind. The problem now is that BTC is really a niche market - there ain't enough people using it to warrant a shift from traditional fiat.

Well, I was talking about it with amazon agents for several times, every time the same answer, "our customers are not VERY interested in it" why so? I think the only reason is that very few people are writing to them,  Sad so when are we going to be "interested enough"Huh Huh Huh

If you ask then it would be one more person that asks.

One person would probably not make a difference, but a 100 would probably get some attention. 1000 people asking would get more attention, and so on.
977  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Taint Analysis Tools on: June 14, 2014, 07:42:56 PM
One way that someone could track your coins is by looking at transfers on the blockchain.

If someone were to know that TX1 was a transfer to a mixing service then they would look for a TX of a similar size that took place shortly after TX1 took place.
978  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is there a Forbes bitcoin millionaire/billionaire list or upcoming? on: June 14, 2014, 07:41:03 PM
This list might be coming in months/years as Forbes is very positive about the Bitcoin (they accept it as a payment method and even have a reporter in SF living exclusively on Bitcoin for last one year)

They will likely report it when one person is a billionaire due to their investment in bitcoin even if they would not otherwise make the list of being one of the word's most rich people.

There are simply too many millionaires to make it worth reporting when someone makes a million dollars.
979  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Merchant's cost of accepting cash on: June 14, 2014, 07:38:47 PM
I've never actually thought about it this way, but I guess you're right. Theft from tills by employees is a big problem. Counterfeiting is also a massive issue which Bitcoin solves too. I think it's only natural that digital payments in some form will replace coins and notes, but I guess half of cash transactions are actually done electronically with either bank transfers or credit/debit cards as well anyway.

This could easily be changed in the future.

With advances in CPU speeds, and increases in amounts of bandwidth that is easily accessible to consumers the block size could be increased.

The block size cap was put in place with the users in mind as if the block size cap was loo large people's computers could not handle it and they would not use Bitcoin.
980  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's to be done when a huge quantity of bitcoins is stolen?(+1% of world btc) on: June 14, 2014, 07:06:21 PM
From where you'll draw the line? Tell me why a 1% robbery of the coins should be treated any more differently than someone stealing 0.5% of the coins. If we block or destroy the Stolen Gox coins, then people will ask why this was not done earlier, in the case of Silk Road and other robberies.

There would be no real way to "destroy" the stolen GOX coins, nor any other stolen coin.

Almost all bitcoin robberies have coins moved around several times, often through tumblers, and always with some kind of miners fee.

Some of the stolen coins would be in the hands of the miners, some would be in the hands of tumblers' shareholders and the rest cannot be traced with 100% certainty.
