My guess is porn. Imagine the user- "Yes dear, I need to buy these Bitcoins to play this online game. It's pretty fun". Beats having all these odd payments on credit cards!
Well, yeah. There's porn. In fact one (at least) of the forum members runs three or four sites that take Bitcoin. But the success of this currency is not going to depend on websites that take 1 or 2 or 5 Bitcoin at a time. It will depend on reliable transactions *beginning* at five figures, and going into six or seven. And *that* is where a new Bitcoin client will have to focus: on 'splitting' Bitcoins into their intended - but never implemented - eight decimal places. With only 21 million of them, I suspect we'll need the added functionality pretty soon now. I see on the charts they're over a US Dollar...

If major criminals were using Bitcoins already the exchange rate would probably be higher. ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) They will be. Count on it. In fact, I'd venture a guess that use of Bitcoin by criminals will be a major tipping point for its success.

Temp is running right around 85...can't seem to do much better than that, either. It's an HP Pavilion with a BS mobo that has no business doing what it's doing. ![Tongue](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/tongue.gif) I'm happy. yikes. 85 is too hot IMHO: short term it's OK, but mid- to long-term you're going to hurt the card if you run it 24/7. you might want to do something about that. try messing with the fans using aticonfig - or, failing that, run with an open case and an extra fan or two. i've got a couple of 5850s set up in my frankenputer miner with an extra case fan and two small blowers from an old CPU cooler blowing directly into the GPU intake fans. they're down to a pretty reliable 72.5-74 C. still a bit hot for my taste. i'm working on it - i'd like 65ish, tops.

wow. that's an amazing price, even considering you'll have buy a couple more PCIe 6-pin power cables. good for you!
zalman makes decent stuff. i have a couple of their coolers on my desktop.

I spent $75 for the case (will be another story/post!) $35 for the power supply...
yikes! i just cobbled together a similar system (are you using the msi 870A-G54 mobo?) - except 5850s instead of 5870s. but i spent $125 on a cooler master 750W GX PS (and then got a $35 rebate). where did you find something that'll run those cards for 35 bucks? i want one for my next miner...

BitCoin would essentially allow you to do the same thing without having to carry any actual currency on you because you would only have to get to an internet access location within each country and then would have access to unlimited BitCoin transactions. This makes it a lot safer and could avoid strict currency import regulations that certain countries impose.
That's an interesting selling point that I hadn't thought of before. oh my, Cryptoman... you've never tried to enter or return to the U.S. with $5,000.00 in cash? ![Shocked](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/shocked.gif) heavens lad - you just haven't lived...

if you could create a transparent transaction window - transparent in *both* directions - it might have value.
but it will have to be a helluva lot more convenient than what already exists.
i buy something on ebay >> i click something >> the merchant receives payment in his preferred form.
i sell something on ebay >> i get payment in my local currency and ebay either doesn't see the conversion from BitCoin or they're convinced not to care >> i send it out.
it has to be /that/ easy to compete. a widget, basically.

you could try contacting "mike" at Google. http://code.google.com/p/bitcoinj/i dunno if "pay-by-wave" will ever work with BitCoin, due to the need for verification by downloading recent blockchains - but when Google puts (to *any* degree) its imprimateur on something like BitCoin, its time for merchants to sit up and take notice. now me; when i'm not actively engaged in being a geek, i earn my living as an antiquarian bookman - and i'm going to start taking BitCoin very soon now. for any book i sell (and we're talking up into the 5-figure range: i've been at it for awhile... ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif) ). to answer your question... i think there's a need to figure out how to *safely* conduct transactions at the speed of the current, bank-driven internet marketplace. i'd like to trust a non-fee'd payment within... say... a second or two. i don't even know if that's possible - but it'd sure be a good thing.

generally, you might want to use SDK 2.1 instead of 2.2. i use 5850s also, and there's a marked difference between the two SDKs: i'm getting a rock-solid 249 Mh/s/card with no overclocking. also, try messing around with the -f and -w settings. note that i'm using DiabloMiner on Linux (Debian testing)... so, more specifically - what's your OS, your ATI Catalyst version, and your start-up parameters? someone with an identical system to yours will have better info...

how do you set the user and pass?
I go in my user home folder and while there is a ".bitcoin" folder there is no "bitcoin.conf" file
should I create it? if so what do I put in it? yes, create it. it should have two lines, if you're mining on the local machine: rpcuser=<user> rpcpassword=<pw><user> & <pw> must match the <user> & <pw> in DiabloMiner.

i dunno 'bout that. i'm running SDK 2.1 on debian testing and Catalyst 11.2 on top of a couple'a 5850s loaded up with DiabloMiner. it works. in fact, it works real good. i think i'll be waiting for some serious feedback from some serious folks before i change anything: ...even my underwear. ![Shocked](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/shocked.gif)

DiabloD3 -
just thought i'd check in with my compliments.
i'm running Debian testing (LMDE) - i froze updates at march 30 on my mining-only box.
with your miner set at -w 128 -f 1, my two (VisionTek) 5850s (with crossfire connector attached) are putting out 495,200 Mh/s regular as an atomic clock. i'll screw with overclocking after i've scored a couple of blocks - i'm coming up on 'average time' (six days plus some) as i write this. my case is a piece of crap though: less than 1/2" clearance between the second card and the bottom of the case. i'm running it open with a couple extra fans, and the bottom card fluctuates between 72-74.5 degrees. gotta poke a hole in it or get a bigger case if i'm gonna overclock.
my SDK is 2.1, and Catalyst is 11.2. motherboard is an MSI 870A-G54, with a ~90 watt Phenom dual-core (whatever...) and 2 gig RAM.
you sell shit and i'm your customer...
EDIT: oh - and coinage on blockage, of course...
