Do powered risers work if you just don't plug the molex in?

Mine did. Asked the supplier before I did and they said plugging them in was optional.
984  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Powered risers or not? on: August 19, 2013, 06:56:44 PM
So are there any drawbacks to using powered risers? I ran my rig without using the powered connectors for a week and it seemed fine. I now have the powered connectors attached and can't tell a difference.

Currently using 3x7970s with a fourth coming online soon.

I have one of those Infrared Thermometers to see what the temps are like but don't know where to check. The 24 pin ATX connector?

985  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My Custom Case Build on: August 19, 2013, 07:01:06 AM
Few more pics. Haven't plugged in the last GPU yet as I'm waiting on some more modular power supply cables.

The powered riser connections came out nice.

In the rack.

Thanks for that kslavik. I choose some more expensive options as I wasn't looking for the cheapest build but that looks like a nice list.

For anyone wondering here are the component costs. Waiting on an additional discount of between 10-30 on the last GPU. Not included is the aluminum cost of around $40-60 and the cost for the tools to build the case.

When going to fix it?
In periods of low difficulty are permanent orphans.   Sad

this is due to multipool & other switching pools pop in at low diff so the network goes crazy. there is no fix for that except making diff to adjust faster.

Had no idea that was happening when the flash mining occurs. Crazy.

Thinking out loud: Do you think that a bunch of p2pool nodes could combat this? P2Pools have an advantage when it comes to orphans since each node concurrently announces a found block. So if we had 100 nodes it would be 100 to 1 in the favor of p2pool against an orphan.

That is a great price at MicroCenter. Thanks. They must have just lowered their price as I looked a few days ago and they were much higher. Makes me want to go buy some more tomorrow Smiley
989  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My Custom Case Build on: August 17, 2013, 07:20:34 AM
Eh... That MSI is about 250 now... Hope you waited to buy...
Case looks great tho.

Thanks! Where is the MSI 7970 selling for $250?! The cheapest I have been able to find is $377.36 after tax and rebates.
990  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My Custom Case Build on: August 17, 2013, 07:04:51 AM
4 GPU system
Power Supply                              $285.15
GPU                  4x$377.36            $1,509.44
Total                                     $1,794.59
Kh/s                                      2976
Kh/$                                      1.658317498704439

The system has been mining with 3 GPUs for over a week now. The case brought down the temps so much that I now run the fans at 80% instead of 85% and increased the voltage from 1.100 to 1.125. Hash rate per card is up to 744 from 722.

Just got the 4th GPU today. Will try to get updated pictures after I get the 4th GPU installed. Changed the way the power supply is installed since it will only have one now.

I think I will be sticking to 4 GPU's per system since that should get me somewhere around 1000 watts (not sure yet as 1 was 300w, 2 was 500w and 3 took it to 800w). Trying to stay close to 80% of the PS's capacity so that is 960 watts out of 1200 watts.

I think it is safe to say that the recent "band-aid" worked and brought the chain to life. Thank you to all parties involved!

...it is hanging on "Testing bitcoind P2P connection to '127.0.0.1:"

Do you have available connections to the wallet? Try shutting down the wallet for a bit. Start p2pool shortly after you start the wallet. Also make sure your using the right ports.

Thank you for such a detailed response!

I was referring to the Scheduled Action settings > Every... x hour(s)

To get the answers to all these minor detail implementation questions, I can look at the p2pool source right?  And isn't there a hard-fork coming up or has that already happened?

Yes. Also look at the official support thread here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=18313
Live support can be had on freenode #p2pool

The litecoin p2pool is 85% to the fork. It will fork once the network reaches 95%. We are running the latest version of p2pool and the client. The pool is also very well connected and is listed in the bootstrap address of the source.

I know it was discussed but what is the result if a coin falls off coinchoose?

Litecoin has been falling off lately and it is usually the most profitable (adjusted for stales) of the coins I mine.

Also, can you set the interval to less than 1 hour? If so does it accept decimals (i.e. 0.5 for half an hour)?

Looks like you finally got some shares and are on the payout list Smiley

I do not think that first number in cgminer reflects that it is an actual accepted share. Checking the documentation for cgminer it says:

Quote
The 2 diff values are the actual difficulty target that share reached
followed by the difficulty target the pool is currently asking for.

With ~200 Kh/s it may take a while to have an accepted share on an LTC p2pool. This will only get worse when the LTC p2pool switches to a minimum payout threashold (very soon). They did this to minimize the quantity of "dust" payments but it also increases the variance of payouts for smaller miners. They say it should even out over time but I would recommend a PPS LTC pool for anyone under 300 Kh/s.
999  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][BTC][LTC][DGC][WDC][CRC][CSC][P2Pool] xPool.net on: August 14, 2013, 03:44:21 AM
If the minimum difficulty for a share is 1, then if I find a share reported by cgminer as difficulty 1*65536 (64k) I should have earned a share, correct?  If so, why aren't I showing on the payout list for the p2pool node I'm using?  Is it averaged across multile blocks?

Q: Why does my miner say it has found a lot of shares but p2pool say I have only found a few?!
A: The real P2Pool difficulty is hundreds of times higher than on normal pools, but p2pool essentially lies to your miner and tells it to work on relatively easy shares so that it submits shares every few seconds instead of every few hours. P2Pool then ignores any submitted shares that don't match the real share difficulty. By doing this, P2Pool can more accurately report your local hash rate and you can see if you are having problems with too many stale shares quickly
1000  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][BTC][LTC][DGC][WDC][CRC][CSC][P2Pool] xPool.net on: August 13, 2013, 05:37:13 PM
Dead Hash Rate is the amount of shares you are submitting that were stale or DOA. You will want that to be as low as possible. Your rate looks ok. Things that affect your dead hash rate are latency to the pool and miner settings or problems. Some have commented that lowering their intensity reduced their Stale/DOA rate.

Displaying that statistic is common for p2pools as it helps you determine if you are mining efficiently. I don't think I have seen it on other types of pools.

Edit:
DEAD ON ARRIVAL - Dead shares were too old by the time they arrived at the pool. Very high dead rates can indicate miner misconfiguration.

Q: "Do the 'orphan' and 'dead' shares in P2Pool's status display hurt me?"
A: They shouldn't - It's normal for some fraction of everyone's shares to end up orphaned or dead. Because payouts are calculated by counting how many shares you have relative to others, everyone with normal configurations is equally "hurt" by this. However, if you have a large proportion of stales, your payout will be hurt.

More can be read at: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/P2Pool
Please take note that a lot of what is mentioned is specific to the larger Bitcoin p2pool but the same concepts apply to altcoins...just at a much smaller scale.
