But here's the thing.  If the same amount of money was spent to build a team but the manager isn't as good as Guardiola or Klopp, let's say this manager is just 'decent'...  Would he achieve as much as Guardiola has acheived in his life time?

Some guys could say yes, some guys could say no and I would get it.  But then again that manager could also be given the sack before he's able to achieve what he was set to achieve.  There's so much pressure brought on the manager behind the huge sums spent in the transfer market.  And only a handful of managers in the world have the skill and the wits to handle it...

Even Zidane's exit showed it could take too much toll.

Many teams have tried to buy their ticket to success, especially in the PL. That's why I rate Guardiola (and especially Klopp) - United and Chelsea have spent more than City (and far more than Liverpool), Arsenal is close as well.
Both United and Chelsea are still without a long-term plan, without a visible manager signature on the pitch and without any sort of continuation with their results.

If you look at this United team - f%&k me, inheriting this pile of crap and doing something with it is the hardest job in football. You have 25 drastically overvalued players that haven't played a team game in their last 5 years.
The best thing would be to sell them all and just start over - but of course you can't do that. Chelsea tried and it didn't really work out for them.

The proof of a good coach lies in what they leave behind them as well. Klopp will leave Liverpool in a really good spot, and Guardiola will surely do the same.

Nunez haters, feel free to tell me I'm wrong about my main man. 21 goal involvements this season, per 90 minutes he is only behind Salah, Haaland. 1 goal/assist per 90 minutes. That's value!

He's improving, yeah. Still probably not good enough for LFC, but now we've got options - so if he continues like this I don't mind him being a part of rotation.
I'd still sell him, so I hope he continues scoring and a club with bad scouting comes and gets him. I really fear how bad he'll be in a different type of football - Klopp's style is the only one where he can excel and he hasn't really done that.

I know this probably isn't as bad as Maidstone kicking out Ipswich but you probably would have lost to them anyway!

This was actually quite bizarre, Ipswich had something like 6.5 xG compared to Maidstone's 0.85.
Happens occasionally, and you can't really blame them for the performance.

Dominant Liverpool once again, Anfield was buzzing - hope it continues like this every home game until the end of the season. We probably get Southampton home next, they play a repeat vs. Watford.

In other news, a strong United team struggling against Newport Grin

Yeah, I didn't watch the first 3 sets (was playing football), but we sat for a drink after it and it was kinda obvious that Sinner will turn things around.
I don't know how Medvedev got 10 breeak points in the first 2 sets, I recall only 1 in the last 2 sets and that was calmly taken care off by Sinner.

I'm glad he won it, I've been telling everybody how good he actually is for the last 2-3 years. He's finally starting to show it - and he's still got room to improve. I hope he pushes Alcaraz for the no. 1 spot.

@casperBGD - even when the draw fully goes your way, you still manage to f%$k it up somehow, eh?
I really expected Everton to go through today, considering how your season's going, you could have fielded a bit stronger lineup.

You lost to them at home in the league as well, right?
987  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbet.io's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: January 27, 2024, 06:46:28 PM
City were champions 2 times between 2008 and 2016 (without Guardiola) and 5 (potentially 6) times with him. Even if he inherited the best team in the world (which he did not, far from it), it would still be an incredible success to achieve such results.
You're trying to split beans for no real reason, most of you agree anyway that he's one of the best coaches football has ever seen.

SAF's dominance in the early PL era was even bigger, but the EPL then was not nearly as competitive as today.
That probably makes Guardiola the most successful manager overall - but yeah - money that he spent to get there will always be something that will diminish the success by a little bit.

I think the most fair assessment of who overachieved the most would be the net amount spent per points won. In the same period they are in the PL, Guardiola won 716 points with a net spend of 700 mil and Klopp won 671 points with a net spend of 250 mil.

That would say that Klopp is the league's lone overachiever, but then again - most of the trophies went Guardiola's way. The same thing happened in Germany.

Why worry for Palmer?

Yep, makes no sense. We all have him, if he scores 100 points or blanks out it won't make a difference.
Nobody will captain him, I'm fairly sure, so we'll all end up at the same place anyway.

Any news with Haaland? He's back in training, probably still early to risk him though.
I'll keep Alvarez and hope for the best. Probably wildcarding after this GW anyway.

cryptofrka you lucky prick! De Bruyne missing a sitter in 82nd minute, and had his potential assist ruined by Dias and Vicario only to have Nathan Ake pounce on it  Sad, I really did miss this question as I could have sworn that I didn't read it while answering the question. But then, it's not over just yet  Roll Eyes

This friendly has been a walk in the park, my man.
I get all the luck when I don't need it at all, the shitty one will return next week in my most important game of the season.

There is no universe in which KDB does not get an assist on that goal...

We waited a bit before grading it just to make sure we get it right. It's a fumble, nobody rated it as an assist, so we'll do the same.
I've seen them given, but almost always this does not count. Even Fantasy (which is quite generous with crediting assists) wouldn't award it to KDB.

Klopp is a world class coach no iota of doubt, and so is Pep Guardiola, these are two managers with different ideologies but very good at what they do best, however, what @Igebotz meant by "little resources" is a terminology I still can't fathom.

Liverpool spending under Jurgen Klopp: Transfer expenditure: €1,133,615,000

Man City spending under Guardiola: Transfer expenditure: €1,492,058,181

Chelsea spending since 2015/16: Transfer expenditure: €1.936 Billion  Roll Eyes

Information source: Transfermarkt.

Don't look at expenditure - the only relevant info is net spend.
Then again, if you inherit a team that is valued at 800 million, you can offload a lot of players and reduce your net spend. If you inherit a 400 mil $ team, there's no one to sell and your net spend grows.

What Klopp did with the budget he's had (net spend) is remarkable. Yes, Pep is fantastic, he changes the philosophy of football, but he does it from the position in which he can do whatever and bring whoever.
Klopp has done it all with a lot less support, and in my opinion deserves more credit for what he's done than Pep.

I will go the other way around. I love Sinner, I've been talking about him a lot, but for me Medvedev on hard at odds over than 3 is value against basically anybody.

Sinner is the favorite, and I hope he wins his first GS. But my money's gonna be on Medvedev.

Klopp just announced that he will leave Liverpool at the season end
not sure that this was expected, maybe by fans that follow Liverpool closely, but does come as surprise to me

will be interesting who will take over the club, do you have any expectations @cryptofrka @buwaytress, not sure who else is Liverpool fan as well

Shit, this really came as a surprise for me. Just read about it, Lijnders apparently going as well (he had a shot at the position in my opinion).

Here's Klopp's message to the fans. Fair enough if he can't be at 100% anymore, the problem is that he at 40% is the 2nd best manager in the league and he'll be extremely hard to replace.

Full interview is here, for those that want it in more detail.

Who I hope we get? Well, tricky, Xabi Alonso would probably be the first name on my list though. Just no Gerrard please.

Woah, Sinner. I am so bummed I haven't watched it, it started at 4am local time.
When I woke up (7am), it was already over.

I read that Đoković did not have a single break point in the whole match. Crazy if true.

To be perfectly honest though, if Medvedev gets to the final, he'll be my favorite for the title.

Hello @trofo and cryptofrka,  don't know if this is a suggestion or should I call it help.  I was thinking if there's a way one can actually see through spreadsheet answers with mobile.  Like if you guys can leave a enough space for viewing answers since there's always some space left at the spreadsheet.  Because mostly one is always with his/her phone and its can be easily checked without having to use a laptop.
Summary, I can't really check my opponent answers with my phone when there's a long answer to a question.  Can you guys leave enough space for the answers to be viewable on mobile. Like right now , my Microsoft isn't responding and instand of me to just check my opponent answers with my mobile,  I can't see all his answers because some answers are long .

A tricky one - we know it's a problem, yeah. The thing is that we don't know how much we need to widen the columns in order for them to be visible on phone.
Most of the columns in which you can't fully see the answer would have to be too wide compared to the others, which would then ruin the experience for those that check on PC.

How many of you check the spreadsheet on the phone? If it's only a few then we'll probably leave it as it is, but if it's a lot we'll find a way to show full answers without ruining the experience for others.

Klopp 2.0 is ready to cook.

Yup, we all thought that this season would be a transitional one.
To be fair, if City was on their standard level, they'd be on 55 points so far - but they have missed KDB and aren't looking as strong as usual.

It's for the taking, I love that we're in a position in which we can mount a real title challenge.
Even if we don't make it, it will help to speed up the process of the new team gelling together and being mentally stronger for the future.

It's quite remarkable how easy these transitions are under Klopp. United is transitioning for 10 years, Chelsea as well. It's quite hard to do properly, especially on a small(ish) budget.

Yeah, why wouldn't Indonesia score in extra time to ruin my pick?
The amount of 'against the odds' situations that are happening to me are beyond belief.

Harko, I'll still get you though. But a lead would have been nice to start with.

Anybody watching Zverev - Alcaraz? Zverev destroyed him in the 1st set.

Alcaraz had it easy so far while Zverev struggled a lot, I expected him to win easily.
He'll need to improve drastically to have a chance to turn this around.
