981  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Hacking off CPU cooler from Corsair H50 to add GPU waterblock.... on: August 07, 2011, 09:34:19 PM
...has anyone done it?

Would be a nice cheap way to watercool a GPU

Just something to consider.  If you have a rig with 2 GPUs go down you freak out a little.  If you have a rig with 8 (or more) GPUs go down....you freak out a lot.
983  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Accelero Cooler for 5970 on: August 05, 2011, 04:27:46 AM
Anybody know where to purchase one?

Everywhere I've looked is discontinued or sold out.

Apparently the 5970's still go to 890mhz no problem.
How on earth are you running 5970's at 890mhz stable?

Can you specify all of your voltage and clock settings?

Up until netflix came into being I would have said tv tuner.
Definitely tv tuner but now I use HDHomerun which is external so....

Heat will reduce the life of the battery significantly, I would consider removing it while mining.

See the tables in the article for summaries.
Thanks for the tip!!  Didn't even think of that...

Post your wallet ID and I'll send you a tip (you can PM it to me if you don't want to post it) .

My Alienware m17x has two 5870m cards and runs at 308mh/s (stock clock).  Fans do not run at 100%.

Going to buy a second one and install a 6970m (already purchased) and a 6990m when I can purchase it seperately.

Mobility cards are far more efficient than their desktop counterparts (albeit at half the speed for twice the price).
989  Bitcoin / Mining support / Windows 7 Enterprise has diskless node option. on: July 22, 2011, 05:36:12 AM
Read the other day that the enterprise version of Windows 7 has the option to run diskless.  This would be ideal for mining over multiple rigs.

The problem is I've never used it and there seems to be almost no documentation on how to get it set up.

Is anyone mining over multiple rigs in this fashion under Windows 7 Enterprise?

Guess we just have to buy more hardware then!!

I have 3 5970s (so far) and even the best one isn't stable over 850.  They run happily around 810-830

Opened an account with this company and had a $240 payment sent to my account. Soon after I received an email that my account was suspended. When I inquired about the cause of the suspension I was accused of being a terrorist!!

I receive mail at a mail receiving agent that many folks use.

This is the exact text of the email:

993  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Should I switch to solo mining? on: July 17, 2011, 09:51:08 PM
Not having to babysit your miners 24/7 is the main reason to run solo.  The constant hassle with the various pool connection issues and DDoS attacks make it far too stressful.

My solo miners have been running for two weeks now and I rarely even log on to see if they've found anything (nothing so far...but it's been a few days).  Just check to see if the room is 100 degrees with the gpu fans whirring away.

994  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: AMD Radeon 6990M! on: July 17, 2011, 09:17:41 PM
A year from now a desktop 6990 might be worth a quarter of what it's worth now.

Not really. Even the 5970 desktop dual GPU has retained 95% of it's original value since it's release in 2009, 2 years ago.

Search eBay for Mobility 5870 or even 4870 and you'll see what I mean.

Those are sold by amateurs who think they're worth a lot & can scalp buyers,
or chinese manuf. with random stockpiles, you can't even upgrade GPUs on the vast majority of laptops

On most laptops (except very high end ones) they are soldered onto the motherboard so there is no way to switch them out

The main reason the 5970 still has so much value today is due entirely to bitcoin.

The MXM 3.0 slot is slowly being adopted by laptop manufacturers and will soon be the standard for the mobile video card market.  Those "amateurs" don't think they are worth a lot.  They are worth a lot.  Mobile gpus still go by the old rule "half the power at twice the cost".
995  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Maximising MH/J on: July 17, 2011, 09:09:30 PM
Dual gpu cards are more efficient than having two single gpu cards.  Trading in your two 5850s for a single 5970 or 6990 will increase your mh/s and lower your energy use.

Mobile gpus are more efficient still.  My dream rig is a desktop mobo and power supply with 10 6990m gpus.  Obviously it is not cost efficient to build one (yet).
996  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: TI XIO3130 on: July 17, 2011, 02:17:57 AM
Better to have multiple rigs with 4-6 gpus each.

If you have one rig with 24 gpus and it goes down you're going to be freaking out while they're offline.
997  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: AMD Radeon 6990M! on: July 14, 2011, 08:52:54 PM
*calculates how long to pay for itself*

Meh, I still can't justify it.  Sad
If it helps, laptop components maintain their value far longer than their desktop counterparts.

A year from now a desktop 6990 might be worth a quarter of what it's worth now.  The 6990m will almost be selling for the same price it sells for now.

Search eBay for Mobility 5870 or even 4870 and you'll see what I mean.
998  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: AMD Radeon 6990M! on: July 14, 2011, 08:49:45 PM
I just wonder how a laptop is going to cool two of those chips in Crossfire.
My M17x has two 5870m cards and has been mining non-stop for about two weeks now.  I can't imagine the M18x, a newer and better designed laptop, would have any problem cooling the 6990s.

Might have to step up...glad I didn't pull the trigger on the 6970s!!
999  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: AMD Brand New APU! on: July 13, 2011, 12:03:05 AM
You are overpaying for the 60mh/s AND paying more electricity as the APU uses more power then a CPU with the same power.  And you are using 50 watts over a sempron 140 that would make the most sense in mining.
Sorry but your logic is flawed and you are simply wrong.

You're saying that using a Sempron 140 sitting around doing nothing and draining 50w is better than an APU hashing at 65-75mh/s and draining nearly the same energy?

You think the APU will drain 100w at 65mh/s?

Nope.  The 5870m in my Alienware laptop has a TDP of 50w and hashes at 152mh/s at stock clock.  The APU was designed from the Mobility series and has an even higher efficiency rating than the Mobility series.  So, like I said, the hashing power of the APU is nearly free (compared to an equivalent CPU).

There is no reason to build a rig from this point forward with a useless CPU when you could be using that slot for efficient extra hashing.
1000  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: AMD Brand New APU! on: July 12, 2011, 01:07:36 AM
Because if you put the $90 into a better card you in most cases would get more
That's a silly argument.

1.  The discrete card will require more equivalent power than the nearly free hashing power from the integrated GPU.
2.  The discrete card will use up a valuable pcie slot on the mobo (if you are going for full density.)
3.  On normal rigs the CPU slot is wasted by an inefficent SLA-256 calculator.  The APU remedies this.
4.  All other things being equal, a rig built with the APU will outhash the same rig built with a standard CPU.

There really is no argument.
