CIB Bank in Hungary (subsidiary of Intesa Sanpaolo) is bullying its customers who want to get involved with Bitcoins. I've heard many stories and had experience myself too. They made me fill out a multi-page form for trying to wire 40 euros (!!!) to an exchange, and asking me for proof of home address(!) and passport copies (!!!) of beneficial owners of the exchange business itself. How nonsense that is, right?

I told them that having Nejc Kodric's papers would mean I could steal his identity so I am sure they're just joking.

I also told them that my deposit account with them holds my savings and I am not willing to trust them anymore with it unless they provide me with proof of home address of their bank's beneficial owners. Guess what, they couldn't provide it, so I cashed out and closed my account.

In contrast, Magnet Bank was super friendly and I had many transactions go through without any problems. In fact they're a very forward looking, socially responsible green bank in Hungary.

Can you explain to me how you think real world cash will make its way into this system?

For instance to replace current bitcoin exchanges, there needs to be some kind of "bank" entity that accepts cash and gives out a "CompanyABC USD cash value" that can be bought and sold from this company, and then into any other currency on the open transaction market?  Or do you think it is more likely that people will deal cash in person and then transfer a digital assets?

With or without OT, people will use exchanges and banks to move in-and-out of "real cash" (as you put it.) This is already occurring (see MtGox for example...)

The long-term solution--to eliminate exchanges entirely as a bottleneck--will happen with the Ripple protocol.

You have the same problem with Ripple: unless you're depositing XRP, you will have a currency issued by someone who's backing its issued currency with real cash (or Bitcoin or clams).

So that will be the point of entry for fiat -> digital currency, and there's your exchange.

Unless I'm missing something.

This is actually a classic case of how traders are using Mt. Gox to manipulate prices. Notice how the price of bitcoin has plunged nearly $30 while this has been going on.

When they get the price down far enough, they'll buy back massive amounts and repeat the process for as long as Mt. Gox allows their API to process massive amount of micro transactions from a single seller.

This process gives them a guaranteed way to buy low and sell high over and over again.

Here's a more detailed explanation from http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9238571/Largest_bitcoin_exchange_Mt._Gox_39_throttles_39_trading_to_tame_price_swings:

Miscreants are also trying to manipulate the virtual currency's price by using Mt. Gox's API (application programming interface) to submit trades for very small fractions of bitcoins. It is possible to watch real-time trades on Mt. Gox through services such as Clark Moody's website, which shows Mt. Gox's order book, or the prices at which people want to either sell or buy bitcoins.

During heated trading, it is possible to see a rapid influx of very small quantities of bitcoin on both the buy and the sell side. A sell order for .0111 of a bitcoin, for example, would represent US$1.33 if one bitcoin is trading for $120.

It doesn't appear that buying or selling a $1.33 slice of a bitcoin would be very practical given the small economy so far for bitcoin services, although the market is growing. But entering lots of small sell orders, for example, can give the impression that bitcoin's price is falling even if it doesn't represent the broader market sentiment. Traders can submit more than one transaction using Mt. Gox's API.

Doing so small trades wouldn't take the price down as you would need much more volume to do so. mtgoxUSD is at $128 right now, if you'd like to push it down to $125 you'd need $615k to do so. $1 trades don't do anything for sure.

Small trades don't drive price down.

If someone's doing lost of small buys and sells they may be trying to market make.

10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where to host Bitcoin gambling site? on: April 15, 2013, 09:52:52 AM

Many online gambling sites are incorporated in Gibraltar, with servers usually all around the world.

I know this doesn't answer your original question, but anyway.
11  Other / Beginners & Help / getreceivedbyaddress for any address using bitcoind? on: April 15, 2013, 09:27:39 AM
Hi,

I am developing a simple BTC app and would like to know if there's any way to use getreceivedbyaddress with bitcoind for an address that is not in the wallet?

Something similar to what blockchain.info and blockexplorer.com provides.

According to the wiki, getreceivedbyaddress "works only for addresses in the local wallet, external addresses will always show 0.".

I didn't find anything specific to this in the forum or googling it.

Thanks for your help.
12  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where Do You Want To See Bitcoins In 5 Years Time? on: April 15, 2013, 09:14:18 AM
I'd really love to see:

- a true Bitcoin backed debit card run by a solid company or bank
- NYSE grade exchanges
- Full set of currency services for Bitcoin based exchanges (stocks, options, futures, warrants, etc.)
- BTC being a ticker at the global Forex market
- 1 million merchants accepting BTC
- stabilized cross-currency prices
- more liquidity, market makers
- grandma could use it on her phone
- no terrabyte blockchain
