If the price is going up, it helps miners keep being motivated to crunch. Difficulty to mine is rising each day that passes, so it makes sense to have them rewarded with higher prices. In this sense, the price really matters.

What do you guys think of the following aphorism: "Money is supposed to serve three purposes: it functions as a medium of exchange, a unit of account, and a store of value. Bitcoin arguably satisfies the first criterion, because a growing number of merchants accept it as payment. But it performs poorly as a unit of account and a store of value."? I saw a similar definition in Mishkin's latest edition of The Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Institutions which spares two pages on Bitcoin (as of 2015). It is also online on this old blog post.

Heard about Bitcoin when it came out, but did not pay close attention. Although I almost immediately understood it would be revolutionary, I thought this would take lot of time, mainly because the society and economy had to understand its benefits first. I think the real difference comes now with the alt-coin infrastructures with the extra features. Nonetheless, Bitcoin is still the benchmark, the grandpa that we should measure the field!
