I will refrain from commenting on your personal situation, as you're not likely going to be happy with what I have to say.

At any rate, yes paper wallets are quite secure. There's also Armory, but I'm not as familiar with how that works.
2  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello, cant decide on GPU on: May 14, 2013, 08:30:00 PM
You can get 7970s. I think they use 200 watts/each so you need to multiply 200(number of GPU's) + like 150 watts to spare. Try to go for the most efficient PSU's to save electricty.

Mine pulls about 210W from the wall @ 1100MHz core, 950MHz memory and 260W from the wall @ 969MHz core, 1700MHz memory (scrypt).

Just FYI.

Unfortunately my budget is limited. Its either 2x7870xt or 1x7970.

Now I am browsing for 7970 with unlocked voltages, any suggestions? Seems Gigabyte is locked.

It seems like some of the Gigabyte cards can hit higher hash rates than the rest. I have a Sapphire hashing at 660Mh/s (660kh/s for LTC). Whatever you do, get one with a nice cooler. You don't want it running at 85C all day long.

1) Is there any reason to save old wallet files if I'm generating a new backup after receiving some BTC?

Which wallet?  If you are talking about Bitcoin-Qt, then it might be a good idea to keep a few of the recent backups in case the most recent backup turns out to be damaged or unrecoverable for some reason.   The advice might be different if you are not using Bitcoin-Qt.

2) Is there even any reason to generate a new backup after receiving some BTC or does the wallet backup just contain the private keys associated with the public keys, and it will be the exact same file regardless if the balance is updated?

Which wallet?  If you are talking about Bitcoin-Qt, then it uses a new address (and therefore a new private key) every time you send a transaction (although it doesn't tell you that it used a new address).  It isn't necessary to backup after EVERY transaction that you send or receive, but it is a good idea to backup on a regular basis.  This way you will be sure to have a backup of any recently generated keys/address, and you'll have multiple copies in case one copy turns out to be unrecoverable.  The advice might be different if you are not using Bitcoin-Qt.

I opened two different backups of the same wallet in notepad. Why are they different? Wouldn't they be exactly the same file if all they contain is the private key?

Which wallet? If you are talking about Bitcoin-Qt, then there is transaction information stored in the wallet.dat file in addition to the private keys, the bitcoin addresses, and any description you've added.

I'm using the BlockChain.info online wallet. Are you saying Bitcoin-Qt sends the BTC from a different address and thus changes your address every time a transaction is done? That's crazy..

For your final note, "the bitcoin addresses".. Does that refer to the address that sent them to me? Why would it store that? Shouldn't that be available on the block chain and thus unnecessary to store?

This whole wallet situation is enormously confusing for new users and is a massive barrier to entry. I can't see BTC being adopted mainstream when it's this difficult to work through how to take care of your wallet and protect your money.

Is there an in depth article explaining how wallets work? I've read several short articles at various websites online, but none of them go deep enough to truly understand how the system works. Someone saying here that you can lose 99 BTC by using the wrong backup file is very confusing and makes no sense to me.

Thanks for spending the time explaining a little bit.

Any time you make any kind of change, it sends you a back-up. They are just being overly cautious. You should always keep the latest one.

Does this definition of change include receiving BTC? Is the backup file encrypted in a different way? What is changed about the data in the file?
5  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Same Wallet. Different Backup. on: May 08, 2013, 05:11:46 AM
That is because some of them are outdated. Anyways they have the same private key

I don't quite understand. As far as I know, the wallet contains two things: Your public address and your private address. I have not changed my public address, thus my private address has not changed as well. Why the different file? What am I missing?

Have you sent bitcoins from that wallet? if yes - it may generate new address and send all remaing bitcoins to that address along with your transaction. And private key of that new address is added to your wallet. Check blockexplorer to confirm this threory Smiley

A new public address or a new private address? The public address is the same because I consistently send BTC to the same address. The private address never changes, right?

Surely there's some basic concept I'm missing here...

Anyone have any ideas why this would be? I can't seem to come up with a reason...
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Same Wallet. Different Backup. on: May 06, 2013, 08:31:23 PM
Your backups store the private keys for your wallets in encrypted form. If you've generated (or imported) any new addresses that list will get bigger.

I have not generated any new addresses. I still only have 1.
8  Other / Beginners & Help / Same Wallet. Different Backup. on: May 06, 2013, 08:25:40 PM
Why do I have several different backup files for the same wallet at blockchain.info? It's set to auto backup right now. Several of the files are the exact same, but some of the more recent files contain a different series of digits than previously. Shouldn't it always be the same for the same wallet?

Thanks.

I may be mistaken here, but I think it also contains other info on the addresses your using etc. Have you added an address or anything between backups?

K.

No, and in fact Blockchain sent me another automatic backup that has yet another series of letters and numbers. I imported all of them to my wallet at Blockchain and it did nothing as I expected. But I don't understand why I have three different backups now.

3) As I understand it, an offline/paper wallet saves the private key to paper, and this is required to send money from that address. Is this right?

Thanks.

share/m will not change but PPS value will.
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Higher Reject Rate mining LTC? on: April 27, 2013, 05:29:21 PM
I have a much higher reject rate mining LTC via coinotron than BTC via BTC Guild. For BTC, it's about .2% rejects, but for LTC, it's as high as 10% long term average. Is that normal?
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: CGMiner - Only 6 Intensity? on: April 26, 2013, 03:10:39 AM
Isn't 7970 supose to use phatk kernel? maybe there will you see a diference...

I have no issue with my current hashrate. It's pretty much in line with many other people at these clocks. I don't know anything about phatk.

You guys are scaring me...I just ordered the 7970 Gigabyte edition and it  comes hopefully tomorrow. I only ordered the darn thing cause it said it got 769K Sad

Why is that scary?
17  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 7970 Question :D on: April 23, 2013, 08:27:15 PM
What cgminer switches are you using?  I've found setting vectors to 1 gets me better rates on my 7970 as well.

-v 1 -g 2 -w 256 -I 6 will get me about 660MH/s when overclocked to 1100Mhz core and 950Mhz clock.  The clock settings are pretty irrelevant, but lower it can help with power consumption.

Exactly same settings here for me with the same hash rate.

i dont know this for sure but im sure its because its harder for it to do more threads then less threads at least i know thats what its like for all chips

Source's
i'm Comptia A+ Cetierfied

Yes but my question is why am I still able to achieve the same hash rate.
