1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Genesis on: May 23, 2013, 09:39:36 PM
I'm fairly new to Bitcoin, only got interested about 6 months ago and I only got involved recently. I've been reading intensely on the subject, and I attended the San Jose conference last week. The model is beautiful, but I think the ecosystem needs more diversity to allow easier entry into the system, and to connect it with consumers and producers more readily.

I'm curious if I can get some Ol' Timers to come shine some light on the early days of bitcoin. I'd like to know more about how their initial value was determined. Why did anyone have any propensity to exchange them in the beginning? Were people mining them because they supported the ideal that our 'money model' desperately needed to change, or was it just a one-off bet that they might be worth something one day?
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / How to start an AltChain on: May 22, 2013, 08:00:58 PM
I love the concept of Bitcoin, but I'd like to create my own 'strand' of the bitcoin blockchain for use in my community to facilitate local trade networks. I do have some background in IT, and would like to know what I need to do to start mining my own chain. We'll call it, MyTownCoin for sake of this discussion.

I don't want to use Bitcoin because of the price barrier for entry. I need to mine my own coins so that I can distribute them locally and market extensively, and BTC is just too expensive now for the aims that I have. Plus, I want to get into the guts of the beast and get a better understanding of what makes it tick so that I can defend my network in the future.

Does anyone know how to go about this or can point me to some resource to begin implementing this?

Thanks,
MegaD

Hey all!

I thoroughly enjoyed the Bitcoin 2013 conference last weekend. Wish I could have stayed in Cali. . . Anyway, does anyone know where I can find recordings/transcripts from the conference? My only regret was that I couldn't be in all four rooms at the same time! There was so much information to be absorbed in that building. I definitely met some of the brightest minds I've ever encountered at that conference.

4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is being killed by governments and nobody seems to care! on: May 22, 2013, 05:58:13 PM
If government wanted to hurt Bitcoin, they could create some shadow organization that claims to be open-source virtual currency but is really just a shell for consuming bitcoins and undermining the faith in the system.

Hmmm, sounds a lot like Ripple. . .

Do you have any more information available on this? I am looking to implement a system for establishing multiple community currencies.

Rightly so, marriage (and divorce) are far too expensive, and only really offer legal benefits. If you love someone, just being with them should be enough. (Unless you need the tax break)

Not sure anyone will ever see this, but I'm not yet able to post in any real forums. My question is, how difficult is it to set the bitcoin mining program to mine an alt chain? I would like to start my own chain as a local currency to exchange amongst friends and neighbors in my community.

Hello all,

Just getting on the BitCoin train today. I've got to say, I am rather excited about all the possibilities a decentralized currency creates for the world. The reserve banking system's days are numbered!

ˇViva la Revolución!

Namste,
