at a 2% difficulty per month increase?
Good luck with that...

Expect x10 to x30 in the next 12 month

that is a huge increase. x30 and im assuming you are saying litecoin will be harder again?

Just that everyone saying this and that, But a lot of people have been saying the 7950's are the go. Thanks for the info!

I would have to disagree as for the 7970 being even slightly better.  Here's a link to the spreadsheet I made for this, it factors quite a bit in.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Au-5jsYGHc29dG94ekRvbEl1WEUxcnFYMU14eDRRV3c&usp=sharing

The 7970 is about $.06 more expensive per KHash/s and per watt.

7970's in a 3 card setup will take roughly 17 weeks and 1 day to break even where as the 7950's will take about 15 weeks and 3.5 days. Surprising that what seems like such a small difference actually has a pretty big effect? $.06 per MHash/s and per watt equates to 11 days difference in the break even time... 10% faster return on investment.

So are you saying it is better to get the 7970's over the 7950's?

Yea come to think of it 3mm is quite thick Tongue So I am still considering if I want to spend so much on mining. People are saying go this way or go that way quite confusing.

But yea riser's would do the job since your cards wont be squashed making it hard for the air to flow through them.

Thanks, that is really expensive for a sheet... I'm looking for some type of metal that is ~3mm thick that is cheap.

Now, if I were you, I would not blow that much money on a setup. Go for some old ATI cards that are rated really well for M/hashes and throw a bunch of them on a decent motherboard, but not an expensive motherboard like the EVGA one.

Thing is now days the cards the old cards cost as much as the new ones.

The only way your cards will not over heat is by water cooling them all, All them fans arnt going to do much when your cards are squashed together like that, Since all your fans are doing is trying to force air be twin them in which case wont cool then down much due to the heat they are making is just over powering. It may drop a little bit but not much. Watercooling is the way to go if your cards are like that.

Why I have been told its better to get cheaper rigs with a few cards then it is to spend it all into one big machine. They will mine at the same speed but you wont have heating problems.

I am a CNC Machine Operator for a 3 meter by 1.5 meter sheet at 3mm thick is about $170 You would only use half that for a case.

I am thinking of doing the same as you but main problem is your cards over heating I was thinking of getting the "EVGA X79 Classified" motherboard since it has 3 graphics card slots evenly spreed out a lot of room be twin them.

How much did that setup cost you? I have around 5k to spend and am looking at getting 1 dedicated pc or 2-3 pc's with 3 7950's
What would you guys recommend to do I will be using it just to mine coins.

Bump!
9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it still profitable to build a mining/gaming rig at this time? on: April 27, 2013, 08:06:43 AM
Cool. So it would still be good to invest into a mining machine for litecoin Would take a few months to get the money make on the machines themself. Then after that profit all the way.

So the 5k investment into these rigs would be the go.

" As far as looking into the future, I personally see Litecoin hitting $5 in a month (if not a week!!) and hitting at least $10 over the summer. However, difficulty, I feel, will scale with this."

$5 a month? that sounds like no profit at all Tongue

Sorry to say but ATI Drivers suck for gaming if you have more then 1 card.  But yea Volk the 3x3 7950's sounds good I have a huge desk that will fit them on it. I shall do my research on what cheap boards and cpu's are the go maybe AMD since they are bang for buck.

I live in Australia, I was considering in mining litecoin since the ASCI machines are going to be rolling out for the rest of the year for Bitcoin. But I would not mind mining bitcoin at this moment in time then move to litecoin once the price has dropped for bitcoin with the new ASCI machines.

I am wanting to make some money back on the rigs I pay for, that way I can start making a profit. Maybe I can pay you a little extra to help tweak the machines? I used to own my own computer store in Syndey. So I know how to overclock and stuff. " Got 2nd in the world for overclocking the old E6600 to 5.0ghz on nitro Tongue "

But back to the topic, Your saying I could get 4 rigs out or my 5k. With 4 different rigs would it be faster then one massive one with 4 cards. I was thinking it would be the same.

Hello Vork.

I am wanting to invest into mining myself I have around 5k to spend what would be the best way to use this? I was thinking once massive rig with 3x 7970's in it on water cooling, And also this rig would be mainly used for Mining only.

Thank you

They are a bit hard to calculate with. I know my hash rate will be 2184 for LC Difficulty I kept as standard import no clue what Pool Fee is.

The mining pools charge a fee to run the servers and take some of the risk. It's usually 2%.

At that point I will be making $420 a month with a elec bill of $75 so 320 a month Seems quite good. That is with 3 x 7970's with 5k should I get 2 rigs both with 3 x 7970's. So many things to think about.

Not for 5k I have 5k to invest and I was thinking of getting 3 x 7970's for mining. And I am looking for a small amount of cash ontop of my income thats all.

I did some napkin calculations and I think that at the current LTC value it might be better just buying LTC directly, rather than buying a new mining rig.

LTC Mining: 7970x2: 1400 kHash/s
Mining Rig Cost: ~1000 USD for 7970x2

LTC/day@1.4GH/s: 3.86 LTC/day = 10 USD/day
LTC/month@1.4GH/s: 116 LTC/month = 300 USD/month
LTC/year@1.4GH/s: 1410 LTC/year = 3600 USD/year

[Exchange rate USD/LTC = 2.58 USD for 1 LTC]

Mining Rig Breakeven (power cost ignored): ~4 months

Three years ago BTC was valued almost similarly than LTC is today, BTC:LTC is now 1:44.

I ask myself, what fundamentals are going to be in play in the next 3 years.

1) The big BTC miners, like ASICMiner, have so much momentum going atm, i.e. enjoying major mining profit and funding from their IPOs. One cannot hope to get in front of them or the ASIC wave. The result is that the entry-level individual pool share is going to rapidly diminish, as the high-momentum mining giants carve out bigger shares and the mining difficulty rise.

2) BFL, Avalon, KNCMiner are going to push +100GH/s ASIC units like clockwork on production lines in a years time. Only the players with big funds to invest will get on the forefront of this wave, leaving small players in the dust.

3) The players who have already invested in GPU miners will definitely have to reappropriate their rigs, and LTC is perhaps the best option. The memory-intensiveness of LTC will make it difficult for the industry to push out high-hash production-line units, ASIC it seems is not suitable for LTC mining. This is a very interesting dynamic, on one hand we have BTC mining that is going to be dominated by a few players and on the other we have highly decentralized LTC mining that is performed by the everyman on the ground.

4) Crypto-currencies are going to grow despite crashes, due to mistrust in fiat and ease of use. Alternatives like LTC are going to have their place. I expect the 1:44 BTC:LTC ratio to steadily reduce over the next years.

How should one position oneself given these dynamics (not exhaustive)?

1) Get in while you still can, on the dips, at least with play money that you can afford to lose.

2) Play with miner shares like ASICMiner-PT.

3) Earn 28% APR BTC interest as a bitcoin lender.

4) When LTC mining becomes sufficiently profitable (+10 USD/LTC ?) invest in some mining rigs. At least GPU's have resale value if profitability drops later on.

Ok after reading that, I made a post about making a mining rig. But for $10 a day does it seem to be worth it? I have 5k to spend and want to invest it into something worth while. I was thinking of 3x's 7970's that would only get me $15 a day I also have to pay for electricity.

But would it still be a good investment?

Thanks

bump.

What does everyone else think of this? Should I invest into a machine with 5k or just wait it out.

Should I invest 5k into a machine and run litecoin along with bitcoin. But would I make money on top of my bills of the machine running.

With the bitcoin I had mined would I have made enuf to afford one of the ASCI machines? I am hoping I would have.
