1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Alternate Proof of Capacity Currencies? on: June 28, 2017, 06:23:31 PM
Google wasn't much help.

I'm interested in starting to mine cryptocurrencies, but I don't want to mine bitcoin, because ASICs just make it not profitable for most people like myself.  Instead of I'm interested in mining a "proof of capacity" based coin.

I already know about burstcoin.  From what I've been reading burstcoin looks like by far the most popular POC based cryptocoin.  But are there any others?

From what I'm researching it just seems to me that POC is the way to go over proof of work or proof of stake, because it uses less electricity, and it doesn't look like it can be decentralized through ASIC mining like Bitcoin, or some of the other more popular cryptocurrencies.  Prius drivers, and the millions of other environmentally conscious people out there will probably drift towards proof of capacity coins based on the lower overall carbon footprint.  With the over inflated prices of graphics cards now, it looks like harddrive mining is the way to go.

What do you guys think?

Do you know of any other proof of capacity based cryptocoin?

What cryptocoin are you currently mining, and why do you farm it over a proof of capacity based coin?

I've read some alt cryptocurrencies use less electricity so there better on the environment, but it would still be nice if a currency could do something like foldathome while mining for coins.

Are there any alternative crypto currencies were the work done mining, does more than just verify the blocks?

Can the "work" done also do something in addition to verifying blocks or while verifying blocks?

I just think all this raw processing power could potentially be used to better ways.

Are there any crypto currencies that work like tor?

https://www.torproject.org/

By this I mean, part of the "work" done by mining would be to help encrypt webtraffic, and maybe the coins would be something like 1meg worth or web traffic encrypted.  You would then be able to use these "coins" that you mined to surf anonymously on the web or spend them like other crypto currencies?

I figure something like this would be very popular given the news about prism etc....

Yes, because as an end-user I would be perfectly fine with 10 minutes of waiting to see a page, and as a miner I would be thrilled to facilitate child porn propagation.

You don't have to wait 10 minutes to view a page in Tor, nor is it's purpose to proliferate porn.

Some sort of cyrptocurrency that encrypts the web in it's work could be good for anonymous society as a whole..
