I am mining with a 7870 and a 5770 on the same PC. I have Win 7 prof 64bit, catalyst 13.3beta and using guiminer-scrypt with separate profiles for both cards. Both run fine for days without crashing, the 5770 tends to overheat so i had to reduce intensity on that and point a case fan to it.

join a pool, like give-me-ltc.com and use guiminer-scrypt. much easier than solo mining and gets you smaller but regular stable payouts.

For Litecoin you can download a fresh blockchain backup from http://blockchain.litecoin.net/litecoin/ make sure you read the readme at http://blockchain.litecoin.net/README.TXT on how to use it. Basically you unpack, then run "litecoind -rescan" to refresh the database. It's much faster to download from here than to download from the network for most people. maybe there is one for Bitcoin as well.

I converted most of my bitcoins into litecoins just before the big spike, now mining feathercoin but not getting much. I've seen people having 100k FC already. I only have 30.
