Ok, so I have to be fully updated to see my transfers every time?

I opened a bitcoin qt wallet and have 98% of the block chain downloaded.  I sent a transfer to my wallet from mtgox.  I also participated in the freeebie sites.  I open my wallet and have a grand total of zero coins.  Am I missing something or does it actually take a long time to receive my coins.

Let me look into some more.  They've made it a bit ambiguous to market this thing.

My wallet just shut down,  when I restarted my addresses I set up where gone.  There was one new address in its place. What do I do? What happened?

Sure, It just sucks none of my friends are wanting to hear about bitcoin, let alone ripple.  It puts me at a serious disadvantage in the networking realm.
