2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Miners are "...a piece of shit" according to this guy. on: December 23, 2017, 10:57:26 PM
I sell GPU mining rigs on craigslist. When this guy came across my listing, this was his opinion...

"Your a piece of shit. Stop building these rigs. People like you are the reason graphic cards are so overpriced, bit coin is going to crash it's a make believe currency that has no backing."

His phone number is (810) 293-5901

Not sure if reverse number searches are accurate, but looks like it maybe Gary Dues from Flint, MI area...

3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 7x PCIe Mainboards that work with 7 video cards on: July 09, 2017, 06:56:33 PM
Hi, what about Biostar Racing Z270GT6, has anyone ever tried? I see it has 7 slots, right?
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=859

I have it, only was able to get 6 GPUs to work.

TOLUD to 3.5 only got me from 4 to 6 GPUs, 7 had errors.

Messaged their support, nothing.

Always blows my mind when MB companies put 7 ports, when only 6 work. Other manufacturers like ASUS solved this with above 4G decode. Biostar is too cheap for that.

Still in negotiation.

First quote, 42U rack at 12kW MAX, unlimited use of power and cooling, $1250/month.

Requested they quote with variable power use. Toured the facility, now waiting for the re-quote.

Basing my calculations on 9-10 4U E-ATX cases.
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ 13 PCIE for sale now $129.99 on: July 09, 2017, 10:49:48 AM
Noooo! I missed it! Ahg. Out of stock already.

Use a server PSU. There are 2400w platinum ones that are like $160.

You would need at least a 30A circuit to be able to run that. For most household rigs, a dual PSU split over two 15A or 20A circuits is a better option. Server PSU's are also too loud for a rig in a living space.

Or, run 220V, cut the wattage requirements in half.
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Friends coming at me with 40-50k to invest into mining rigs on: July 08, 2017, 04:38:29 PM
The real issue is sourcing hardware right now. Chances are it will take 3 months to find all the hardware you need.

Have the same issues with investors. I currently have $150K ready to go and build-out. But, hardware is a joke right now and mining hardware (GPUs and high wattage PSUs) is going through a huge change with 13 PCIe slot MBs that look as if Windows will be able to recognize all 13.

Then, RX Vega, and mining specific cards around the corner, makes it hard to want to scale out with available 6-8 GPU RX 560/550 systems.

If there was a way to get a hold of 500 RX 570s right now, would have already started. 4 major US distributors can only get me 560s/550s in bulk, 570s maybe once a week 15 at a time. Still not enough to drag big money in right now.

7  Other / Off-topic / Re: Should I Go To College ??? on: July 08, 2017, 04:28:34 PM
Got my undergrad at Cal Poly Pomona in CIS. Worked for 5 years, took the GMAT.

Now at University of Michigan - Ross School of Business, half way through the MBA program.

My advice...The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

I always think I knew enough until I took that next class.

Just finished a Data Mining class. Changed my whole outlook on machine learning and regression modeling. That class led me to create a custom scripted chart indicator for an Algo cryptocurrency trading bot.

Finance recently helped me calculate ATCF (after tax cash flow) using a 5 period Commercial Real Estate type Pro Forma analysis to determine the true valuation of a cryptocurrency mining operation. Should it be leveraged? How much leverage? Little more advanced than break-even days.

So, yeah. College may help you understand and apply more complex topics than you would have otherwise never cared to think about.
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: is mining worth it? on: July 08, 2017, 04:04:55 PM
I feel it is hard to explain mining operations and investments in general.

Or, maybe it's not?

Invest in a machine. Run it. (Negative cash flow period 0)
Sum of net earnings from pool. (Positive cash flow period 1)
Sum of net earnings from pool. (Positive cash flow period 2)
.
.
.
Sell the rig (Positive cash flow period 12)

Determine the risk you are willing to take aka Discount Rate (%). Obviously, the discount rate for mining is higher than an insured savings account.

Plug the numbers into
http://www.investopedia.com/calculator/netpresentvalue.aspx

Is it positive? Invest.
Negative? Do not invest.

Have 10 positive project estimations and only enough money for 1 project? Rank the projects by NPV, pick the first project.

Last year, sometime when Zcash launched, I compared all my investments to find mining was the best NPV, ROI, IRR, BE value then anything I had going on. Stocks, real estate, and flipping houses all stopped. Sold everything and took the risk.

Try running any investment metric on Ethereum. Imagine you invest 20K in rigs with a 90 day break-even (BE). That's $6666.67 dollars per month gross. Hard to imagine other investments that payoff that well, or that fast. Rent a $20,000 home for $6666.67/month?
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How will AMD Vega affect GPU mining? on: July 08, 2017, 03:15:58 PM
AMD VEGA = poor hashrate and big power consumption.

The only thing tested for mining with Vega is the Frontier version, it did bad, something like 30MH/s @ 300watts OEM VBIOS. But, the FirePro Polaris series also does poorly. Both of these cards are workstation-grade and were released before the gaming consumer versions.

Saying Vega is crap when only seeing test results for the workstation/server version targeted at AI, deep-learning, neural-network data mining, is like saying the RX 470/480/580/570s are going to be crap based on the results of the AMD FirePro release.

Even before the RX 500-series was released, miners started selling the RX 400-series based on rumored architecture and estimated hashrates before anyone had test results. Those miners then paid for new 570/580s and their hashrate and power consumption didn't change.

Vega still has a chance to prove itself in mining once some RX Vegas come out. But, I wouldn't go selling all your current cards betting on Vega being "better."
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 5 or 6 GPU Motherboard Alternative to H81 BTC Pro and ASROCK Anniversary Edition on: July 08, 2017, 02:52:02 PM
There are a ton of other threads that have solved the problem of which motherboards work with 6 or 6+ GPUs.

It's a misconception that there is a small subset of motherboards compatible with 6+ GPUs.

settings like TOLUD, and enable 4G decoding solve these problems.

Every 6/6+ PCIe slot board I've bought (MSI, ASUS, AsRock, and Biostar) needed BIOS config tweaking to fix the issue. They all work z170, z270, b250, b350.

11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Data Center Mining Garage and Man Mining Cave ( PART 2 !!!!!!!!) on: July 08, 2017, 02:39:23 PM
Right now I've got 12 rigs at home almost max'ing the 150AMP breaker @ 110V. Thought about doing what this Florida build out did.

Now I want to expand, double maybe triple. Debating whether to flip to 220 or bring in more electrical service lines. Either way, the A/C system is under powered for 2 adults and 12 mining rigs. That would need upgrading too.

This endeavor led me to comparing the option of co-locating at a data center nearby vs. creating a data center in a commercial space or even at home.

Found that the data center can beat my overhead + power costs. I pay almost $1000/month (14cents/KWh) to run and cool 70 470s/480s in the summer months, not including space and networking costs.

Compared to creating my own mine, the data center has badge access, loading dock access, work space to build, fiber-to-premise, and redundancy of everything (power, ISP, etc.), a 24/7 NOC, and a ton of little extra services.

I found that once you need to upgrade past 150/200 AMP service at home to feed the hungry mining rigs, that is the point where one needs to evaluate data center pricing. The numbers changed my mind for sure.

12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: RX 560 4GB Ethereum on: July 08, 2017, 01:18:52 PM
A lot of people hating on the 560, I get it.

But, after a good tuned VBIOS flash, this card is producing a slightly better hashrate/watt metric than the 470/570. Some say this card is exactly half of a 570.

Seems like once you consider the $/PCIe-slot cost of the rig (minus the GPUs)...

570s needing 1200watt+ PSU
vs.
560s needing 750watt+ PSU

a 560 build could come very close to matching the break-even, some even say it beats, the Break-Even Days metric of a 570 rig.
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: ASrock H110 Pro BTC+ 13 GPU Board on: July 08, 2017, 12:53:46 PM
Forgot to mention...

The competing Biostar motherboard boasts their design layout of the PCIe ports prevents the risers from contacting each other and shorting. Notice in pictures of the board running live, tape over the back pins that commonly stick out the back of the 1X side of the riser adapter.

Heat shrink wrap the 1X side might work. Seen a lot of tape used in older rigs.

Clicked on this tiny "More..." link on AsRock's main page for this H110 motherboard...brought me here.

http://www.asrock.com/Microsite/H110ProBTC%2B/

Look at the screenshot of the Device Manager in Windows. Ummm....is that 13 GPUs?

Also, look at Tip 4. Do you think it is safe to have PSU-2 supply power to both the risers and GPU of the second set of cards? I thought it was safer to have the risers powered by the same PSU powering the MB.
