1  Economy / Economics / What if everybody wanted to move to BTC? on: April 26, 2013, 11:06:25 PM
Hypothetical question:

What if everybody wanted to move from USD to BTC? Wouldn't the dollar become completely worthless after a certain number of people switched over, making it impossible for everybody else to convert their money?

This is very different then government sponsored currency swaps where x amount of the old currency was converted to y amount of something new. Since BTC can't just be printed out as desired, how could a country completely switch to bitcoin without destroying their economy?

Neither fee was charged on the coins I bought. It it back to normal now, so I am thinking it was a glitch.

Just bought some BTC on Coinbase and noticed they are not charging the regular fee tonight. Glitch or promotion?

6  Bitcoin / Electrum / Restore from seed question on: April 25, 2013, 06:50:25 PM
When I first found Electrum, I transfered in a small number of coins, deleted my wallet and then practiced restoring from my seed. It worked great and all the original addresses/coins were there. I was impressed with how easy everything was.

Now that I have been using it for a while, I have 50+ addresses. If I need to restore from my seed in the future, how will the client 'know' about all newly created addresses? With the original client, I know the wallet needs to be backed up each time new addresses are created. If this is not true with Electrum, how does it work? Does Electrum just use my seed to re-add addresses 1 at a time until there are 5 unused addresses in the list? How are Change addresses differentiated from receiving addresses?

I love the deterministic wallet idea, just a little confused how it works. Thanks.

I am still a little confused about 'addresses'. If I have a wallet with BTC2.00 spread across 4 different addresses (0.50 in each) and I send BTC0.75 to somebody else, are 2 of my addresses randomly emptied and then BTC0.25 sent to a new change address?

Can addresses be split up into separate wallets, or do they share the same private key(s)?

These restrictions are absolute bullshit

They actually seem like a good way to stop spam to me.
