1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: PPCoin wallet recovery on: July 29, 2017, 09:48:59 PM
I am not sure, if I get it fully.

If I create a new unencrypted wallet and creating some backup (B1) from it. Sending a coin into the wallet and waits until it gets confirmed. Then I encrypt the wallet. I throught away the encrypted wallet and taking the Backup B1. Will it be able to access the coin I send to the wallet?

Hi there,

okay, now something really stupid happened yesterday to me as I was losing a wallet while attempting to encrypt it. While the loss is painful, but nothing too critical, I want at least understand what exactly happened. Wink

Simple story, I encrypted my wallet and wanted to use some good password. Thus I was using some password manager, generated a key and encrypted the wallet with it. Sadly I forgot to store the new password and of course the manager crashed right into that moment. So I had a wallet with a completely unknown password and no way to recover it  Undecided

After the fast shock, I remembered that I have some old backup of that wallet with an intact unencrypted copy of the wallet. So I tried to copy the wallet.dat from the backup into a fresh copy of a ppcoin wallet and redownloaded the chain. From my understanding the transactions (and thus the coins on it) should be still accessible as they had been done before the encryption happened. And as far as I read, there will be about 100 address within the wallet and I did not had so many transactions. So theoretically the address should be still in there, right?

However after the chain was synced it says that the wallet amount is 0.0 as it seems like it did not catch the interesting transactions due to unknown address. Why is this not working? Shouldn't I be able to recover the coins that was on the account before the encryption happened and they had been replaced with new ones? Any possibilities to recover the wallet when having the old (unencrypted) and new (encrypted) wallet on disk? If it is not possible, I really would like to understand why this seems not to be working as from my understanding I shall still having all the relevant keys available.

Many thanks in advance!
