1  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BitBet rules of betting on: April 30, 2013, 07:19:33 AM
Many of the propositions listed on bitbet are dangerously ambiguous. A few examples follow.

Quote
Djano Unchained at the Oscars

The Tarantino film will win in one or more category at the 2013 Academy Awards.
http://bitbet.us/bet/6/djano-unchained-at-the-oscars/

What film is that? I have never heard of it. Of course they mean Django Unchained, but such an elementary mistake detracts from the credibility of the site. What does it mean for a film to win a category? Only a few categories such as Best Picture are nominally awarded to a film. What if it wins Best Production Design only? "No" bettors would point out that is awarded to a named production designer for a film, not to a film.

Bitcoin price in USD on the MtGox exchange will rise above $200 before the end of 2013
http://bitbet.us/bet/215/bitcoin-price-to-rise-above-200/

End of 2013 in which timezone? there is an approximately 24 hour ambiguity in the spec. There is no default timezone mentioned in the FAQ. This defect is common and I will not labor it.

Quote
Before June 2013 one plane from P.R.China (non-military or military) will be shot by one military plane from Japan. Warning shots with no touching on the Chinese plane will not be counted.
http://bitbet.us/bet/148/one-plane-from-p-r-china-will-be-hurt-by/

Does this mean it has to be exactly one plane that is hurt and exactly one plane doing the shooting? Does shooting encompass rockets or only ballistic projectiles? Accounts of any confrontation between Chinese and Japanese planes are certain to be contested.

Price inflation in the USA (as measured by official CPI-U) will reach 4.2% or more in 2013. To be measured by the "change avg" value here
http://bitbet.us/bet/144/us-inflation-to-double-in-2013/

Sounds all technical and correct, doesn't it? Not really. Actually there is no "change avg" value in the linked BLS page. The poser has misread the column headers. There is a "Percent change" units specification above two columns labelled "Dec-Dec" and "Avg-Avg". Moreover BLS inflation figure are subject to official adjustment.

Bitbet needs someone with gambling experience and research skills tightening up these propositions. It is imperative that the settlement of propositions be as uncontroversial as possible.

I would not recommend betting on an ambiguous outcome. Try betting on real-life events, such as sportsbooks, or BetOnEurovision.com

Why bet on a game of chance when you can try your skill. Watch the contestants perform and then BetOnEurovision.com to see whether you can forecast the winner.

You bet on a two day old betting site that used anonymous registration?

Sorry, but some tips for the future:

Whois is your friend.

Hidden registrations are great for personal websites but suspicious for businesses and twice as suspicious for BTC.

Time of registration.  For BTC sites you want at least 2011, anything less you gotta do more research.  Do research anyway if older than 2011.

You want a real name too.  You want to see old technical questions they ask from before the days of BTC.  You do not want to see someone who figured out a clever way to trade in WoW, a felon, or perhaps a club DJ.

You would want to see someone who had past experience with a fiat money gambling site.

Sometimes the enthusiasm of BTC advocates makes them vulnerable to the predations of scam artists.  So just look and look again.  Learn to research anyplace that you are trusting your money to for at least an hour.  A real investment should be researched for at least a working day or more.

I would disagree with some of your rationale. Age should not imply immediate reputable standing. Conversely, the lack of age should not imply otherwise. Back to your 'whois' example, domain names can be bought (if the right amount is paid).

We have just launched a betting site - betoneurovision.com that is no more than a few days old. But then again, the contest only takes place once a year and lasts a weekend. It would unreasonable to have a domain name that's X years old for this sort of thing.

Rather than going straight off whois, I suggest having a hard look at the website. Dodgy websites look and smell dodgy. You don't have to go too far to see that you're about to get scammed.

Since the original poster mentioned new/emerging betting sites, I thought I'd mention one - betoneurovision.com

There's really no such think as overpriced if you think about it. It's only what the market will bear to pay at an instant in time.
8  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Problems with bitcoin-24.com WARNING! UPDATE! on: April 30, 2013, 06:36:20 AM
I would refrain from a wagering site where the admins don't respond in a timely manner. There are plenty of decent sites out there.

Do you absolute need the services of a bookie? We take BTC bets but using the tote model - which is farer than a bookie and doesn't impose risk premiums. See http://betoneurovision.com

In answer to the original question, you can either create a betting account with some site (and deposit your BTC to bet) or there's a lightweight model where you bet on a proposition by transferring your BTC to a nominated (unique) address. If you win, your winnings get credited on the return address.

The latter model provides anonymity and ensures that your details (and your wallet) cannot be ransacked. We take this approach in http://betoneurovision.com

Hi papageovanni,
As stated on the website, your bitcoin transaction ID acts as a receipt. Should Italy win, we will wire your dividend back on the address that you used to bet.

I'm currently working on an FAQ section on the website that will re-answer a lot of these common question.

Thank you for betting, and good luck!

You can bet on whoever you want, but Italia will prevail!
You can stake your words with a small BTC bet. Good luck Smiley

Hi,

We're a new tote-like BTC betting website on the Eurovision song contest. We would like to get whitelisted so that we can field inquiries on this forum. We've already had some questions, and have had to wait for the 5 min timeout before posting.

Some info on us:

fully transparent betting via the blockchain (no internal accounts or wallets held by us)
    99% RTP
    multiple pool (semis, finals)
payouts of varying size - depending on likelihood (favourite vs longshot)

Thanks in advance.
