1  Economy / Speculation / Re: Any impact of the Russian SU24 shot down by Turkey (NATO)? on: November 24, 2015, 06:58:19 PM
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreux_Convention_Regarding_the_Regime_of_the_Straits

somebody help to understand this convention. If turkey is in war it changes the access to the strategically important nearby black sea and mediterranean sea.

Cui bono?

yeah. It concerns the  bosphorus strait (and marmara sea and the dardanelles). If Turkey is in war, it can act as it wants in terms of the passage of military ships accross the bosphorus. It still has to allow passage of civillian vessels belonging to third countries.

If you happen to have some Turkish Liras. It would make sense to exchange them with bitcoins right now.

Russia is Turkey's largest natural gas supplier, with Ankara buying 28-30 billion cubic meters of its 50 bcm of natural gas needs annually from Russia.  Turkey imports Russian gas primarily through two pipelines, one passing through the northwestern region of Thrace, the other entering Turkey from under the Black Sea.

"No gas entry from Thrace means the end of Turkey as that gas pipeline feeds all of Istanbul and the Marmara region. There is no alternative pipeline system that can bring this gas."

Do you know a month before 100 people killed by isis attack in capital city of Turkey?just like Paris.

Yeah. Except those people were kurdish (the same people fighting ISIS in Rojova), and they were demonstrating against Erdogan's government. Erdogan supports ISIS, and ISIS attacks Turkey (under Erdogan's watch probably) to kill Kurds. There is no inconsistency there.

What is more troubling is the question that while ISIS makes an official announcement after each of their terrorist acts (you know white on blue background, with the ISIS logo on the top left). They never did this for Ankara. Even though the people who carried out the bombing were ISIS guys. So how does one explain that apart from someone else who benefits from what happened, who has ties to ISIS, using these guys?

You won't have a WW3 from this. But Turkey is totally dependant on Russian gas. Russia is Turkey's largest natural gas supplier, with Ankara buying 28-30 billion cubic meters of its 50 bcm of natural gas needs annually from Russia. Russia is also building a nuclear power station in Turkey.

These deals could be cancelled in Russian terms, and Turkey would have a very hard winter:

Turkey imports Russian gas primarily through two pipelines, one passing through the northwestern region of Thrace, the other entering Turkey from under the Black Sea.
"No gas entry from Thrace means the end of Turkey as that gas pipeline feeds all of Istanbul and the Marmara region. There is no alternative pipeline system that can bring this gas."

6  Other / Politics & Society / Re: to Europeans: can you please try explain to me why your countries accept Muslims on: November 15, 2015, 01:57:24 AM
You know, we should let all the criminals out of jail.  Not many of them were rapists.  We could spend our time and money better figuring out which of them were rapists than simply discriminating against all criminals and locking them up.  Just because they were branded as criminals doesn't mean they are all bad, that's discrimination.  There are all types.  Some rape, some rob  banks, some are completely innocent.

Why are you so prejudiced?

Smiley

Sorry I thought I was having a conversation. Instead I have been trolled. I should have known better.
7  Other / Politics & Society / Re: to Europeans: can you please try explain to me why your countries accept Muslims on: November 14, 2015, 11:28:09 PM
So 50 percent of your country supports people who think all non Muslims should die, and you don't think that is going to cause issues when you go to non Muslim countries?

But crime is an individual concept. I may come from a family of criminals. Unless I commit a crime, I can not be discriminated against. The government can watch me more carefully, but they have to treat me like everyone else. This is a universal principle of human rights.

Even if 99% of Turks were homicidal maniacs, you can't argue that I am also one, unless you have reasonable evidence that I, "as an individual" may be one.

There are actually many details. For instance ISIS guys are sunnis. Some people that flee from them are alevites or shiites. These are different sects of islam. But from the point of ISIS people (or those that support ISIS point of view) alevites and shiites are not muslims. So again, who decides, who is to be classified as muslim? There are also christians in Syria. There are agnostics. There are people who call themselves muslims, but drink alcohol. There are people who don't call themselves muslims but don't eat pork etc. There is a whole spectrum...

So why waste all this effort to figure out who is a muslim and who is not instead of trying to figure out who poses a threat to France?
8  Other / Politics & Society / Re: to Europeans: can you please try explain to me why your countries accept Muslims on: November 14, 2015, 11:10:41 PM
also a working definition of racism is discrimination (legal or otherwise) of a person based on her race, ethinicity or religion. You can discriminate against someone because he/she has done bad things, or has violent tendencies, or simply because he/she is stupid etc. (the latter being called mentalism for example), those are not as problematic. But if you discriminate based only on race, ethnicity or religion that causes a lot of problems.

Racism actually is not necessarily a problem in itself. But europe has had experience with it, and has decided to never practice it again. Because it doesn't work, and it causes massive social issues. I think the institutional policy against racism is part of the effort to not go down that road again.
9  Other / Politics & Society / Re: to Europeans: can you please try explain to me why your countries accept Muslims on: November 14, 2015, 10:51:34 PM
At no point did I or I think anyone in this thread say it would be a choice to kick existing Muslim citizens out of a country, as that is wrong. The countries that gave them citizenship cannot and should not go back on that.

My question was why accept more Muslims.

I am not a french citizen. I am a turkish citizen, I work in france and plan to apply for citizenship.

It is besides the point too. There will be more people like me in the future. Who are highly qualified, some of them atheists or agnostics. And your idea of not letting new muslims into europe, will block these people also.
10  Other / Politics & Society / Re: to Europeans: can you please try explain to me why your countries accept Muslims on: November 14, 2015, 05:08:10 PM
How do you decide who is a muslim btw?

Do you assume based on their birthplace?
Take my case. I am an atheist born in Istanbul. My turkish identity card has "muslim" written on it. I work as a researcher in a prestigious french university, and I contribute rather positively to the french society (I had many students, postdocs etc.). So you want france to kick me out, or not let me and my family into france based on what is written on my identity card? Very smart. I hate islam more than you do, believe me...

Or do you just ask? Do you think people who have no problem killing innocent people indiscriminately will have any problem lying to you about their religion? Muslims even have a word for it, it's called takiyye (in turkish spelling anyway). You are allowed to lie to further your religious goals.

So the rational thing is to not approach with a broad brush. And to try to identify who is dangerous and who is not, instead of trying to identify who is muslim and who is not, which doesn't immediately translate to violence or lack thereof anyway.

I guess this is the principle. But I agree that in practice the french are a bit too idealistic. They should probably come up with a better way of identifying the risks. Not everyone that can provide a translated cassier de judissiare from their home country is innocent in real life.
11  Economy / Speculation / Re: 5 november rally and US Marshalls sale. on: November 09, 2015, 01:06:57 PM
It is probably not purely random coincidence. But it may be a complicated interaction of different factors. Here are some possible theories:

1) A group of bidders agreeing among themselves to bid low and use their money to raise the market price, so that they can dump on the market afterwards. What is the risk? Someone can outbid your collective (remember though there are a lot of coins), but in that case you would have bought some bitcoins from the market and nothing from the auction... Not so bad if you can accept that risk.

2) In fact the prospect of the auction may be what was keeping the price low in the first place. When people realized that it will happen, and there are serious bidders (maybe some big people with internal knowledge knew already who bid what approximately), they decided to buy at the current (low) price, which won't remain low for long.

3) Maybe the auction (which is a one time opportunity in the end) motivated some people. To get loans, find some investors etc. to grab those cheap coins. But, once you realize that you are probably outbid in the auction, you may go to the exchanges to buy what you can. In fact other people understanding this fact may raise the price as well.

Think about it. There were 11 bidders. If you are guessing that these were partial bids which total to about 4-5 times the total amount around 300, you have maybe 4x44000x300 dollars at the hands of people who want to buy bitcoins. If they fail the bid some of them may very well turn to exchanges...

I may think of other factors, coupled with other things, such as those happening in China may somehow explain the mystery. However, the explanation that it is the Marshalls who pumped the price to sell their coins at a better premium is pretty ridiculous. Where do they get the money? Is it an official order? Who signs the order to buy? The marshalls have accounts in the oversees exchanges?
12  Economy / Speculation / Re: If it goes to $275, are you going to keep faith or just give up save the little. on: October 28, 2015, 10:45:01 AM
You need to repress your fear/greed feelings and act with logic. Buy low / sell high.
Any and all valuations of btc in trade for fiat scrip are hideously low by definition.

The people of the future will look back on the selling of btc for fiat currency the way we might would look upon trading a $100 bill for a couple of rare seashells.

Note: Seashells were once used as currency.

16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will this cause France to get into Bitcoin - 75% Tax on Rich on: January 02, 2014, 09:42:05 PM
I don't think there would be very good roads without government. Do you think individual companies are capable of organising nationwide infrastructure projects?

It actually is the private companies that build the roads in most countries. Government collects the taxes and outsource the actual job of building.

but we are talking about organizing... In the sense of figuring out which community needs what and supplying it at the national (or international) level.

Somehow I tend to think that google would do that better than U.S. department of transportation if you let them make money off of it.

The hard question is how to do this in a distributed fashion. I am sure it is doable, but you probably need to discover something as revolutionary as bitcoin in order to facilitate people working towards a defined goal in a distributed but coherent way in real life.

do you value parks and roads?

I do.

I was at the gezi park, which the government wanted to destroy, to build a shopping mall. The people defended it with their lives... I value such parks.

Don't get me wrong, the government provides me nothing that I value.

I think that business, government and religion is part of the same meta structure that oppress people. Business pays the politicians, and the clergy, and each of these provide essential services to one another.

France is a strange country where, every now and then, people mess things up.

PS - if school teachers and policemen want to earn more money all they have to do is start their own businesses if they think that is so easy LOL

and what would happen if all the police and the school teachers turned to businessmen/women? You as a businessmen would have no secuity and no skilled labor to run your business, no?
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will this cause France to get into Bitcoin - 75% Tax on Rich on: December 31, 2013, 11:32:51 PM

1. Tax to death the 10% hard working people and squeeze as much money as possible.

2. Give this tax money as benefits to the remaining 90%, lazy people.

You could say "gifted", "smart" or some other junk if you want to justify your priviledge to yourself... But "hardworking"? Come on... people don't make millions by working hard. There are a lot of people, working crazy hours and they don't make a living wage. Being rich is all about being at the right place at right time and using that opportunity the right way, its about knowing the right people and knowing the right way of doing business. For short it's about opportunity, judgement and initiative. Has nothing to do with hard working.

I myself, made the most money in my life, when I was being a lazy bugger.

I mean we are at the bitcoin forum after all, and quite possibly you are an early adopter...

Wait... was it an irony?
